The right VPN for Egypt depends on which IP address you need: an overseas IP while you are in Egypt, or an Egyptian IP while you are abroad. NordVPN, Surfshark, Proton VPN, ExpressVPN, and PrivadoVPN appear in a current Egypt-focused comparison, but the available evidence does not establish that any one provider reliably connects through every Egyptian network. Some providers describe an Egypt location that is virtual rather than physically in Cairo, and free plans may limit server choice or exclude Egypt entirely.
Choose by the direction you need to change your IP
Before comparing providers, decide what you need the VPN to do. If you are in Egypt and want an IP address from another country, you need access to a provider’s servers outside Egypt. If you are abroad and want an Egyptian IP, you need a provider that offers an Egypt location on the plan you intend to use. Those are different requirements: a VPN can serve one without serving the other.

An advertised Egypt location does not necessarily mean the provider operates physical hardware in Egypt. ExpressVPN identifies its Cairo location as virtual, and Cloudwards says NordVPN’s Egypt location is virtual. A virtual location can provide an Egyptian IP while the physical server is elsewhere; it should not be described as a server physically based in Cairo. ExpressVPN’s Egypt page and Cloudwards’ Egypt comparison explain those provider-specific details.

Five VPNs included in an Egypt-specific comparison
The table identifies what the cited sources establish, not a hands-on performance ranking. Cloudwards places NordVPN first, Surfshark second, and PrivadoVPN among its Egypt options. The providers’ feature descriptions and the other publications’ findings are attributed below; they are not independent confirmation that a service will connect on a particular Egyptian ISP.

| Provider | Egypt IP availability | Free option and limits | Relevant notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| NordVPN | Cloudwards describes an Egypt location as virtual. | Not stated in the cited Egypt comparison. | Cloudwards includes it first in its list. VPN Alert lists obfuscated servers as a relevant feature, but that is not an independent tunnel test. |
| Surfshark | Not established in the cited notes. | Not stated in the cited Egypt comparison. | Cloudwards includes it second. VPN Alert describes Camouflage Mode and apps for phones, computers, and TVs; check current plan terms and feature naming with the provider. |
| Proton VPN | Proton says it offers Egypt servers on paid plans; its free plan does not include them. | TechRadar reports ten free locations with automatic selection; free users cannot choose among those locations. | TechRadar also reports a kill switch. Proton describes its apps as open source and says security audits are publicly available; those are provider statements. |
| ExpressVPN | ExpressVPN describes a virtual Cairo location. | Not stated in the cited Egypt comparison. | Its site describes apps for supported devices, direct Android APK downloads, and Fortify, an optional VPN router for home-network devices. |
| PrivadoVPN | The cited comparison does not establish a dedicated Egypt location; Cloudwards notes it has no servers in Africa. | TechRadar reports 13 locations and a 10 GB data cap for the free plan. | Cloudwards includes it as a free option. The cited sources do not establish reliable bypass of filtering on Egyptian ISPs. |
For cells marked “not stated,” the cited Egypt-specific comparison and provider notes do not supply a comparable free-plan or Egypt-location fact. Plan features and limits can change, so confirm the current offer directly before subscribing. Cloudwards’ provider shortlist is at its Egypt VPN comparison; TechRadar’s free-plan details are in its PrivadoVPN review and Proton VPN Free review.
NordVPN and Surfshark: paid comparison candidates
Cloudwards’ ordering makes NordVPN and Surfshark candidates to compare for someone seeking an overseas IP from Egypt, but the cited ranking is the publisher’s assessment, not a result from tests on Egyptian networks. NordVPN’s virtual Egypt location is relevant if you need an Egyptian IP abroad; it does not mean the server hardware is in Egypt. For Surfshark, VPN Alert describes Camouflage Mode, which is intended to disguise VPN traffic, along with apps for phones, computers, and TVs. These feature descriptions do not prove that either service can establish a tunnel through a specific Egyptian ISP.

Proton VPN: paid Egypt access, with a separate free tier
Proton explicitly distinguishes its Egypt servers from its free plan: the free plan does not include Egypt servers, so it cannot meet the requirement for an Egyptian IP address. Proton’s Egypt information is at its Egypt server page. For basic connectivity using the free tier, TechRadar reports ten free locations, automatic selection rather than user choice, and a kill switch. Those limits matter if you need a particular country’s IP rather than simply a free VPN connection.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesProton says its apps are open source and that public security audits are available. Treat those as the provider’s descriptions; a specific audit claim should be tied to the relevant audit and its scope, rather than taken as proof of overall service reliability.

ExpressVPN: virtual Cairo location and Android installation option
ExpressVPN describes its Cairo location as virtual, so it may provide an Egyptian IP without physical server hardware in Cairo. Its Egypt page also describes apps for supported devices, direct Android APK downloads if the usual app store is unavailable, and Fortify, an optional VPN router intended to cover devices on a home network. Obtain installation files from the provider’s official site and, where lawful and feasible, arrange access before travel. An alternate installation method does not ensure that the provider’s website is reachable or that a tunnel will connect.
PrivadoVPN: free plan, but no established Egypt location
PrivadoVPN is included as a free Egypt option in Cloudwards’ comparison. TechRadar reports a 10 GB data cap and 13 locations for its free plan. Cloudwards notes that PrivadoVPN has no servers in Africa, and the cited material does not establish a dedicated Egyptian IP or reliable access through Egyptian filtering. It may be worth comparing for limited free use, but do not treat it as a solution for obtaining an Egyptian IP or as a proven way around network blocks.

Will a VPN connect from Egypt?
There is no sound basis in the cited evidence for a blanket claim that a named VPN “works in Egypt.” Website access, app installation, and establishing an encrypted VPN tunnel are separate steps: a provider’s website might load even when a connection attempt fails, or an app might install without being able to connect on the local network.
VPN Alert’s 2026 monitor reports a VPN/privacy-tools category connection cut on Telecom Egypt, first observed September 30, 2026. That is a dated observation about access to a site or category, not a test showing that all VPN tunnels are blocked. The monitor says it covers 67 of the world’s biggest sites and apps across 24 countries; those figures describe the monitor’s stated coverage, not a count of blocked Egyptian services or a VPN success rate. Its observation does not establish what happens on other Egyptian ISPs. See VPN Alert’s Egypt monitor.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
VPN Passport says fresh tunnel-level evidence is scarce and labels some provider results low-confidence or unverified. As a result, provider feature pages, older anecdotes, and accessible websites should not be mistaken for current network-specific proof. Its Egypt reachability page makes that evidence limit explicit.
Plan for installation and connection separately
- Choose a provider and install its official app before arrival if doing so is lawful and feasible.
- Confirm that your account works and learn where the provider’s connection and troubleshooting settings are.
- Have a backup way to reach essential services; advance setup is preparation, not a guarantee that a connection will succeed.
- If using Android and the app store is unavailable, ExpressVPN says it offers an official direct APK. Download it from the provider, not an unofficial mirror.
Free VPN or paid plan: match the limit to your task
A free tier may be adequate for trying an app or getting a basic connection, but “free VPN for Egypt” does not automatically mean a free Egyptian IP, a choice of exit country, or demonstrated access through local filtering. Proton’s free plan excludes its Egypt servers; TechRadar reports that free users cannot choose among Proton’s ten listed locations. PrivadoVPN’s free tier has a reported 10 GB cap and 13 locations, but the cited comparison does not establish an Egypt location or reliable Egyptian network access.
If your goal is an Egyptian IP while abroad, verify that Egypt is actually selectable on the exact plan you will buy. If your goal is an overseas IP while in Egypt, check the free plan’s country selection and data restrictions, then distinguish those advertised capabilities from whether a tunnel can connect through your ISP. Compare the total subscription cost and renewal terms on each provider’s current checkout page: the cited material does not establish comparable current prices or renewal conditions, so introductory prices should not be treated as lasting costs.
What the evidence says about privacy, law, and risk
A VPN encrypts traffic between your device and the VPN service, but it does not make every online action lawful or anonymous. The official Egyptian Financial Regulatory Authority hosts the Arabic text of Law No. 175 of 2018. WIPO Lex records that the law was issued August 14, 2018, and took effect August 15, 2018. Neither cited legal record, as reviewed here, resolves how the law applies specifically to ordinary VPN use. The records are available from the Egyptian Financial Regulatory Authority and WIPO Lex.
Sources differ on how Egyptian restrictions apply to particular online conduct. Proton VPN says VPN use is legal while noting that actions taken while connected remain subject to Egyptian law. VPN and Privacy offers a more cautious secondary interpretation, saying the law creates potential risk when circumventing website blocks. These positions are not an authoritative, current legal interpretation specific to ordinary VPN use. A VPN does not make otherwise unlawful conduct lawful; consult current local advice for legal questions. Proton’s statement is on its Egypt server page; the secondary discussion is at VPN and Privacy’s Egypt guide.
Quick Recap
How to choose among these five
- Define the IP you need. For an Egyptian IP, confirm that Egypt is offered on the plan and distinguish virtual from physical location. For an overseas IP from Egypt, check which countries your plan lets you select.
- Decide whether free-plan restrictions fit. Check country selection and any data cap. Proton Free does not include Egypt servers; PrivadoVPN’s reported free allowance is capped at 10 GB.
- Check the setup route for your device. Confirm the provider has an app for your platform. For Android APK installation, use the official provider source; for router coverage, verify device and service compatibility.
- Consider connection uncertainty. The cited evidence does not provide a robust Egypt-specific VPN success rate or comparable ISP-by-ISP tunnel test. If connection is essential, plan a backup rather than assuming a provider feature guarantees access.
- Review current billing terms. Compare the full term price and renewal price directly before purchase; the available sources do not establish comparable current costs.
