What Is an Embedded ID Chip? How RFID Tags Identify Things

An embedded ID chip usually refers to an RFID tag or transponder that sends an identifier to a compatible reader. The term does not specify a particular frequency, protocol, or standard.

An “embedded ID chip” usually means an RFID tag or transponder built into, attached to, or placed inside an item. It communicates an identifier to a compatible reader using radio waves. The phrase is descriptive, not a precise technical term, and not every embedded chip uses RFID.

What is an embedded ID chip?

In common usage, an embedded ID chip is a small identification component incorporated into an object, label, card, or animal implant. When the system is RFID-based, the chip and its antenna form a tag, also called a transponder. A reader sends radio waves and receives the tag’s response. The response may contain an identifying number, additional data, or both; a system may also use that identifier to look up information stored elsewhere.

“Embedded” describes where the component is placed, while “ID” describes its role. Neither word specifies a particular radio frequency, protocol, data format, or standard. As a result, the phrase alone does not tell you which reader can communicate with the chip.

How does an RFID chip work?

An RFID system has two basic parts: a tag and a reader. The reader emits radio waves; the tag responds in a way the reader can interpret. In passive tags, the reader’s field supplies the energy for communication. Active tags use a battery. The tag’s chip and antenna enable the exchange, though the exact design differs across systems. The U.S. FDA summarizes the reader-and-tag arrangement and the distinction between passive and active tags in its RFID overview.

For one specific low-frequency product architecture, Microchip Technology says a single coil connected to the chip serves as both the power supply and the bidirectional communication interface, while the antenna and chip together form the transponder. That description applies to the product architecture discussed on its RFID products page, not every RFID tag.

Can a chip be read without touching it?

Yes. RFID is designed to communicate by radio, so a compatible reader can identify a tag without physical contact. That does not mean every tag can be read at any distance, by any device, or through every material. Whether a reader can detect a tag depends on compatibility and the specific system setup. A passive tag also needs a reader field to power its response.

What is the difference between a tag and a reader?

  • Tag or transponder: The component attached to or embedded in the thing being identified. It includes a chip-and-antenna arrangement and responds to a compatible reader.
  • Reader: The device that emits radio waves and receives the tag’s response. The reader and tag must use compatible specifications.
  • Application or database: Software may use the tag’s identifier to retrieve a separate record. That record is not necessarily stored on the tag itself.

Where are RFID ID chips used?

RFID can support identification of products, animals, and people, but the system design depends on the application. The EUIPO describes uses in product identification, traceability, anti-counterfeiting, and smart labels in its RFID technology guide. NIST lists applications such as asset management, tracking, access control, and automated payment in its RFID security guidance. These are not interchangeable implementations: they may use different frequencies, protocols, standards, and controls.

For example, animal identification products may follow ISO 11784/11785 modes, while supply-chain RFID standards address product tagging, packaging, transport units, and reusable transport or packaging items. IEC’s entry for ISO/IEC 17360:2023 describes that supply-chain scope. The appropriate standard depends on the intended use.

What makes one embedded ID chip compatible with a reader?

Compatibility is not established by the label “RFID” alone. Before choosing a reader or tag, check the following:

  • Use case and environment: An animal identification system, an access-control system, and a supply-chain inventory system may have different requirements.
  • Frequency and protocol: The tag and reader need compatible radio specifications and air-interface protocols.
  • Power type: Passive and active tags operate differently; a battery-powered tag is not equivalent to one powered by the reader’s field.
  • Data and identity: Identify whether you need the tag’s identifier, data stored on the tag, or a separate application record linked to it.
  • Standard and lifecycle: Application standards may specify identification, data, performance, or expectations for reuse.
  • Security and privacy: Consider what a tag reveals, who can read it, and what controls protect the reader and connected systems.

Identifier terms matter, too. ISO/IEC 15963 distinguishes an RF tag unique identifier from a permanent identifier of the integrated circuit; these should not be treated as one universal “chip number.” See the ISO/IEC 15963-3:2019 catalog entry, reviewed and confirmed in 2024.

Does an RFID ID chip track location?

Identification is not the same as continuous location tracking. A passive RFID tag responds when a compatible reader is able to read it; that response alone does not establish GPS tracking or a continuously updated location. A system can use reader activity to record where and when a tag was detected, but that is reader-based monitoring. Continuous location tracking would require a separate powered location system.

What are the privacy and security considerations?

Because RFID can be read remotely, a deployment should consider what information is exposed and who is authorized to read it. Connected readers can also feed monitoring systems. Risks and suitable controls vary with the tag, reader, application, and system configuration; they cannot be inferred from the phrase “embedded ID chip.” NIST’s RFID security publication was published in 2007 and updated in 2017, so it is foundational guidance rather than a current, application-specific threat assessment.

How to evaluate a chip or RFID setup

  1. Define what must be identified. Decide whether the system needs to identify an animal, product, person, asset, or another item, and whether it needs only an identifier or additional data.
  2. Find the tag’s specification. Confirm its frequency, protocol, power type, and any application standard. For animal identification, for example, verify whether the product supports the required ISO 11784/11785 mode.
  3. Match the reader to the tag. Confirm compatibility with the tag’s frequency and protocol rather than assuming a general-purpose reader will work.
  4. Check what happens after a read. Determine whether information is stored on the tag or retrieved from an application or database, and assess access controls for that system.
  5. Test the intended setup. Use the actual tag type and a compatible reader in the environment where it will operate. A demonstration kit is useful only when its frequency and protocol match the intended tags.
