What Is an Early Print of Dorothea Lange’s “Migrant Mother” Worth?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sotheby’s estimates an early print of Dorothea Lange’s “Migrant Mother” at $100,000–$150,000. The $150,000 figure is the top of the estimate—not a confirmed sale price. Sotheby’s describes the gelatin silver print as probably made in 1936 or 1937; the available lot information does not establish its final sale result or complete provenance.

What does the $150,000 figure mean?

It is the upper end of Sotheby’s estimate for this particular print, whose estimate is $100,000–$150,000. An estimate is an auction house’s expected range, not proof of what a buyer paid. Without an updated record confirming the lot’s outcome, the specific print’s realized price should not be reported as $150,000.

Sotheby’s auction listing describes the object as a ferrotyped gelatin silver print, executed in 1936 and probably printed between 1936 and 1937. It bears a Resettlement Administration credit stamp and annotations on the reverse. These details describe the offered object; they do not, on their own, establish its complete ownership history.

Why does the print date matter?

Lange made the photograph in Nipomo, California, in 1936, while working for the Resettlement Administration, later renamed the Farm Security Administration. The woman pictured was Florence Owens Thompson, shown with her children. Lange later recalled, as quoted by MoMA: “I made five exposures, working closer and closer from the same direction.” MoMA recounts that she encountered the family at a camp after a pea-crop failure and notes the image’s broad circulation and association with migrant farm workers’ hardship during the Depression. MoMA’s collection record provides that context.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The date of the photograph is not necessarily the date every physical print was made. A print produced close to the original exposure is a different object from a later print of the same negative. That distinction is central to understanding why the Sotheby’s object is described as an early print rather than simply a copy of the famous image.

How can an early print be distinguished from later versions?

Compare the specific object’s print date, photographic process, markings, provenance and condition—not just the image depicted. Sotheby’s identifies its lot as a ferrotyped gelatin silver print, likely printed in 1936–1937, with a Resettlement Administration stamp and reverse annotations. Those are object-specific details, not a universal checklist that proves authenticity or value by themselves.

Other institutions record materially different objects bearing the same image. MoMA catalogs a separate gelatin silver print made in 1949. The Library of Congress catalogs a photogravure published in 1982, and its collection copy is numbered 72/300. A later print and an editioned photogravure should not be treated as interchangeable with the early print Sotheby’s describes. See MoMA’s print record and the Library of Congress catalog record.

  • Print date and process: distinguish an early gelatin silver print from a later print or photogravure.
  • Markings: examine the credit stamp and annotations described for the specific object.
  • Provenance and condition: these matter to assessing an individual print; the cited Sotheby’s information does not establish a complete provenance.
  • Price type: keep an auction estimate separate from a completed sale result.

Does another “Migrant Mother” auction result set this print’s value?

No. Phillips reports a different print of “Migrant Mother” sold for $337,500 against an estimate of $100,000–$150,000. That is a result for a separate lot, not the Sotheby’s print, and it cannot be transferred as the value or outcome of Sotheby’s offering. The available Phillips record does not establish a publication year for that result. Phillips’ result record identifies the separate auction result.

What can be concluded about this lot?

The supported figure is Sotheby’s $100,000–$150,000 estimate for a print it describes as likely made in 1936–1937. The estimate ceiling is not a confirmed sale price. Establishing the outcome requires an updated record for that exact lot; evaluating an individual print also depends on its object-specific markings, provenance and condition.
