An application development stack is the collection of technologies and services used together to build, run, and maintain an application. A typical web stack combines a frontend, backend, database, and serving or hosting layer; the exact mix depends on the application and how it is operated.
What is an application development stack?
“Stack” describes technologies that work in layers or cooperate as a system. AWS defines a software stack as “a set of layered tools, libraries, programming languages, and technologies used for building, managing, and running an application” (AWS: What is a software stack?).

The term has no single required checklist. It might mean the code and frameworks used to create an application, the environment that runs a web application, or a broader set of tools and services for building and delivering it. For a web application, a useful starting point is its interface, server-side logic, data storage, and hosting or server layer (MDN: Introduction to the server side).
What are the parts of a tech stack?
Each layer has a different job. The parts communicate so an application can accept a request, act on it, and return a useful result.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Frontend or client
The frontend is the part people see and interact with. Web interfaces commonly use HTML for structure, CSS for presentation, and JavaScript for behavior. Frameworks and build tools may also be included in the stack.
Backend or server
The backend processes requests and applies the application’s rules. It can authenticate users, communicate with databases and APIs, and decide what response to send. Common backend language choices include JavaScript with Node.js, Python, Java, and PHP; the suitable choice depends on the project and its supporting frameworks.

Database and other data storage
Data storage lets an application save and retrieve information. Relational databases such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, and SQLite organize data in structured tables. NoSQL databases such as MongoDB and Cassandra support other data models. The choice should reflect the data and the operations the application needs, rather than a general claim that one category is always better.

A server or hosting layer receives or serves requests and provides the environment in which application components run. In a conventional setup, the operating system and web server may be visible parts of the stack. A hosted or serverless platform can manage some of those details on the application team’s behalf.

Supporting services and tools
A broader stack can include APIs, authentication, security controls, caching, external integrations, deployment systems, and development tools. These are not mandatory items in every stack; they belong in the description when they are part of how that particular application is built or operated.
How do the layers work together?
Consider a user signing in to a web application. The browser sends a request to the server. Backend code checks the request and may verify the user’s identity, apply business rules, and read or update stored data. The application then returns a response that the frontend presents to the user.

A LAMP application illustrates the sequence. Apache receives a request, PHP processes dynamic content and can retrieve or store information in MySQL, and Apache returns the resulting page; Linux provides the base operating system (AWS: What is a LAMP stack?). The example shows how components cooperate; other stacks can perform the same broad jobs with different technologies.

| Stack | Components | What the example illustrates |
|---|---|---|
| LAMP | Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP | A classic web stack pairing an operating system and web server with a database and server-side language. |
| MEAN | MongoDB, Express.js, Angular.js, Node.js | A JavaScript-oriented combination spanning data storage, server-side framework, frontend framework, and runtime. |
AWS describes MEAN as a JavaScript-oriented alternative to LAMP (AWS: LAMP stack vs. MEAN stack). The parts can vary: for example, the “P” in LAMP has also been used to refer to Python or Perl (Google Cloud: What is a LAMP stack?). These names help explain possible combinations, but do not imply that an application needs those exact components.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does “full stack” mean?
“Full stack” usually refers to work or systems spanning both the frontend and backend. It does not mean that one person or team necessarily covers every infrastructure, operations, security, or data specialty. A contemporary full-stack application may also connect databases, external APIs, integrations, and AI capabilities. Cloudflare’s reference architecture presents those alongside concerns such as security, performance and caching, and compute; it is one example of an architecture, not a required stack (Cloudflare: What is full-stack?).
How do I choose a tech stack?
There is no universally best stack independent of the application. Start with what the application must do and how it will run, then compare technologies against the team’s ability to build and maintain them. Google’s guidance notes that architecture influences language and framework choices; in a microservices architecture, different services can use different languages or frameworks (Google for Developers: Build a content-driven website).

- Architecture and hosting: Decide whether the application fits a server-based, serverless, or microservices approach, and check that the required runtimes and services are supported by the intended hosting environment.
- Features and integrations: Match the data model, APIs, authentication, payment or other external services, and framework capabilities to the application’s real requirements.
- Performance and growth: Establish needs for latency, throughput, caching, and expected growth. Avoid choosing on a vague promise of speed or scale; assess the requirements the application must meet.
- Security and maintenance: Consider how actively the components are maintained, how fixes are delivered, whether useful documentation exists, and whether the team can keep the system secure.
- Team skills and learning curve: A technically suitable stack can still be a poor fit if the team cannot deliver or maintain it. Account for both onboarding and long-term staffing.
- Total cost: Consider development effort as well as hosting, staffing, and the costs of operating and scaling the application.
These criteria are tradeoffs to investigate, not a universal ranking. A small application with straightforward needs may not require the same layers or operational complexity as a system serving many users or relying on multiple integrations.
