An Apple iPhone chip is the Apple-designed system-on-a-chip (SoC) inside a particular iPhone. It brings key processing components together, including the CPU, GPU and Neural Engine. The chip name and iPhone model name are different: for example, Apple lists an A19 in iPhone 17, an A18 in iPhone 16 and an A15 Bionic in iPhone 14.
What does “system on a chip” mean?
Apple describes its silicon as systems on a chip: integrated silicon that combines processing components in one chip architecture. Apple says its silicon forms a common architecture across its products, including iPhone, iPad and Mac. Apple’s SoC security document explains the broader concept.
In everyday conversation, “iPhone chip” usually means the main Apple-designed SoC in a specific iPhone, such as the A19 in iPhone 17. It does not necessarily mean every chip in the phone: the available specifications here do not provide a complete inventory of a model’s separate wireless or radio components.
What do the CPU, GPU and Neural Engine do?
Apple lists these as distinct parts of the iPhone chip. Their names identify different kinds of processing hardware, while the core counts describe a model’s configuration—not a direct measurement of how fast it performs.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
- CPU: The general-purpose processing component. Apple lists the iPhone 17 with a six-core CPU: two performance cores and four efficiency cores.
- GPU: The graphics processing component. The iPhone 17 has a five-core GPU with Neural Accelerators; Apple also lists hardware-accelerated ray tracing for this model.
- Neural Engine: A component Apple identifies for machine-learning-related processing. The iPhone 17 specification lists a 16-core Neural Engine, but does not provide a benchmark or a detailed task list.
These labels and configurations can vary by generation. Check the specifications for the exact iPhone model rather than assuming that one model’s component counts apply to another.
Examples of iPhone chips and configurations
| iPhone model | Chip | CPU | GPU | Neural Engine |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone 17 | A19 | Six cores: two performance and four efficiency | Five cores, with Neural Accelerators | 16 cores |
| iPhone 16 | A18 | Six cores: two performance and four efficiency | Five cores | 16 cores |
| iPhone 14 | A15 Bionic | Six cores: two performance and four efficiency | Five cores | 16 cores |
These configurations come from Apple’s specifications for iPhone 17, iPhone 16 and iPhone 14. Apple identifies 2022 as the iPhone 14’s introduction year. This is a set of examples, not a full generation history or a controlled performance comparison.

- This pre-owned product is not Apple certified, but has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon-qualified suppliers.
- There will be no visible cosmetic imperfections when held at an arm’s length.
- This product is eligible for a replacement or refund within 90 days of receipt if you are not satisfied.
- Product may come in generic Box.
Does a higher core count mean a faster iPhone?
Not by itself. A specification tells you how Apple configured the listed components; it does not establish how two phones compare in real-world speed, battery life or a particular task. A meaningful performance comparison needs comparable benchmark results or testing for the task in question. The Apple specification pages cited above list components and core counts, not directly comparable benchmark results across these models.

How to read an iPhone chip specification
- Start with the exact phone model. Find its technical specifications on Apple’s product or support pages.
- Note the chip name. An A-series chip name, such as A19, is distinct from the iPhone model name.
- Read each component separately. Check the listed CPU, GPU and Neural Engine configuration, along with model-specific features such as ray tracing.
- Match any comparison to the question you care about. Core counts alone do not establish speed, battery life or performance in a particular app.
