An antidetect browser is software that lets you manage separate browser profiles and change selected characteristics websites can observe. It is used for tasks such as authorized quality assurance, ad verification, research, and keeping client environments separate. It does not make a user invisible: websites may detect altered browser signals, and a tool does not override a site’s rules or applicable law.
How browser fingerprinting works
Websites can observe more than an IP address. A browser exposes configuration characteristics that, in combination, may help identify or re-identify a user, browser, or device. The W3C describes this practice as browser fingerprinting and notes that it can affect privacy as well as support security functions: Mitigating Browser Fingerprinting in Web Specifications.

An antidetect browser typically organizes activity into isolated profiles and modifies selected browser-exposed values. The exact signals, profile separation, and implementation differ by product; a vendor’s description is not independent proof of how reliably its features work. Fingerprint settings and network routing are separate layers: a proxy can change the apparent network address, while browser software changes browser-visible signals. Neither automatically provides the other’s capabilities.

Authorized profile separation
Separate profiles can help keep work contexts apart, such as separate client environments or business accounts, when the relevant service permits that use. They can also support QA, ad verification, or research. These are examples of possible uses, not permission from any particular website. Check the service’s terms and account policies before using multiple profiles or accounts.

Testing and research
A team may use profiles with different browser configurations to test how a site behaves under authorized conditions. Before choosing a tool, establish which signals the test needs to vary, how profiles and their data are stored, whether automation is required, and whether the service being tested allows the activity. A project’s acceptable-use policy can illustrate the distinction: Fury describes separate business or client accounts, ad verification, QA, and research as supported examples, while excluding fraud, credential attacks, impersonation, and bypassing identity checks required by law. That policy is project-specific, not a legal determination or a rule for other services: Fury acceptable use.
What not to use it for
Do not treat profile separation as authorization to evade a platform’s account, identity, or fraud controls. Fraud, impersonation, credential attacks, and bypassing legally required identity checks can create serious harm and legal consequences. The applicable rules depend on the service and jurisdiction.
What it can—and cannot—hide
An antidetect browser may alter selected browser-visible characteristics, but it cannot promise that a profile will appear ordinary or avoid a website’s controls. Research has examined consistency-based detection of fingerprint countermeasures, so altered values may themselves be detectable: FP-Scanner: The Privacy Implications of Browser Fingerprint Inconsistencies.

Nor does changing a fingerprint necessarily change the apparent network address. Conversely, using a proxy does not by itself alter browser-visible settings or isolate profile data. Consider these as distinct controls and assess each one for the authorized task at hand.
Antidetect profiles and Tor Browser are different approaches
Antidetect software generally supports separate profiles with selected differences between them. Tor Browser takes a different privacy approach: it seeks to make users less distinctive by reducing variations and grouping users around common values. Its documented protections include letterboxing, standardized browser values, and first-party isolation; these measures do not mean every signal is hidden. See the Tor Browser fingerprinting protections.
If your goal is general privacy rather than maintaining multiple distinct profiles, that difference matters. Tor Project guidance cautions that routing another browser through Tor does not give it Tor Browser’s protections; the other browser may still expose identifying details or retain tracking state. See Using Tor with other browsers.
How to evaluate an antidetect browser
There is no standardized guarantee implied by the term “antidetect.” Evaluate a specific product against the task and the risks rather than assuming all products provide the same protections.
- Authorized use: Confirm that the website and account rules permit the activity.
- Profile isolation and storage: Understand what each profile keeps separate and where its data is stored.
- Signals changed: Look for a clear account of which browser-visible characteristics can be modified; do not infer capabilities from the category name.
- Limitations: Prefer explicit disclosure that fingerprints can be detected over claims of guaranteed invisibility.
- Security and data handling: Review update practices, access controls, and how profile information is handled.
- Operational fit: Check team controls, automation requirements, and compatibility with the service and workflows involved.
Screenshot capture without changing browser identity
If your goal is to capture a webpage for documentation or development, changing browser fingerprints is usually beside the point. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server from Yorker Media, with a one-request capture flow and tools for AI agents. Its focus is capturing pages, not making a browser profile undetectable. Details are at ScreenshotNeo.

Is an antidetect browser the same as a VPN or proxy?
No. A proxy may change the apparent network address; an antidetect browser changes selected browser-visible characteristics. They address different layers.
Does using Tor through another browser make that browser as private as Tor Browser?
No. Tor Project guidance warns that another browser may still expose identifying details or retain tracking state, and does not gain Tor Browser’s protections.
