An “alternate Bitcoin network” is a descriptive phrase, not a single formal protocol term. It can mean a Bitcoin testing network, separate software that implements Bitcoin, or a persistent blockchain split caused by incompatible consensus rules. Those meanings are not interchangeable: copying Bitcoin software alone does not create a new chain or currency.
What does “alternate Bitcoin network” mean?
The phrase needs context. A person using it may be talking about an environment for testing Bitcoin software, an independent implementation of Bitcoin’s software, or a lasting chain that follows rules incompatible with another chain. To understand a particular use, establish which of these is meant.

- Testing network: an environment for development and testing rather than the original Bitcoin transaction network.
- Independent implementation: different software that may still enforce compatible consensus rules.
- Persistent chain split: a separate chain that continues because some nodes accept blocks other nodes reject.
The Bitcoin Developer Guide distinguishes mainnet—the original network for Bitcoin transactions—from testnet and regtest, which are testing environments. Testnet and regtest should not be described as competing mainnets. See the Bitcoin Developer Guide glossary.

What kinds of “fork” are involved?
“Fork” has several meanings in Bitcoin discussions. A software fork describes code lineage; a block fork can be temporary; and a consensus fork concerns differences in the rules nodes use to validate blocks.
#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Software fork
A software fork is a copy of an existing project. It does not, on its own, say whether the copy follows different consensus rules, creates a distinct chain, or has a separate currency. Different implementations can remain compatible if they validate blocks under the same rules. BIP 99 also notes that a bug in a reimplementation can cause an unintended consensus divergence. Read BIP 99.
Temporary block fork
Miners can find different blocks at the same height close together in time. Nodes may initially see different blocks, but when they follow the same rules, subsequent proof of work can resolve the short-lived competition. This ordinary block fork is not necessarily a lasting split into separate networks. The Bitcoin Developer Guide’s block-chain section explains node validation and block-fork behavior.

Consensus fork
A consensus fork occurs when implementations differ in how they verify consensus rules. BIP 99 describes this as a divergence that can impede the network’s expected convergence on a single chain that has the most proof of work and satisfies the rules. If the disagreement persists, nodes can maintain incompatible views of which blocks are valid.

| Change | Effect on validity rules | Compatibility implication |
|---|---|---|
| Soft fork | Some blocks that were previously valid become invalid; blocks previously invalid remain invalid. | It is designed as a compatibility-preserving tightening of rules. Participants still need to understand which rules their software enforces. |
| Hard fork | Some blocks that were previously invalid become valid under the changed rules. | Users who do not upgrade can remain incompatible with users following the changed rules, potentially producing distinct chains. |
These definitions and the upgrade implications are set out in BIP 99. A hard-fork disagreement can persist because each side may reject blocks the other side accepts.

- Works seamlessly with Android, iOS and desktop: Connect wirelessly or via USB-C to your phone or computer. Manage your crypto anywhere with our companion Trezor Suite app.
- Do their nodes enforce the same consensus rules? Different software can still be compatible; different validation rules can produce disagreement.
- Is the fork temporary or persistent? Competing blocks at one height can resolve under shared rules, while incompatible rules may sustain separate chains.
- Is it mainnet or a testing environment? Mainnet is the original transaction network; testnet and regtest are for testing.
- Was the difference intentional or caused by software behavior? A rule change may be deliberate, while an implementation bug can produce unintended divergence.
These distinctions identify what kind of network is being discussed. They do not establish a chain’s economic value, security, or adoption; those claims require evidence specific to that network.

Bitcoin Core’s development team said in a statement dated January 7, 2016: “At the end of the day, the Bitcoin Core development team does not decide the Bitcoin consensus rules.” The statement is useful context for understanding that installing different software does not, by itself, make every participant follow new rules; it should not be treated as a current vote or a complete account of Bitcoin governance.
