Many current services combine conventional web search with generative AI: they retrieve material from web sources, then may turn it into a conversational or summarized answer with links or citations. The term covers different kinds of products, so it is useful to distinguish an AI feature inside a search engine from an AI assistant that can search the web.
What is an AI search engine?
An AI search engine is a search system that uses AI techniques to understand what someone is asking and help locate relevant information. Some return conventional result pages with AI-generated summaries; others let people ask questions conversationally and retrieve web pages to inform a response.

That makes “AI search engine” a broad category, not one standard product design or a single shared technical architecture. Google describes AI Overviews as a feature within Google Search, Microsoft presents Copilot Search as a blend of traditional search and generative AI, and OpenAI describes web search within ChatGPT’s conversational interface. Use the specific product name when explaining how a particular service works.

How do AI search engines work?
They build on conventional web search
A conventional search engine discovers and crawls web pages, analyzes and stores information in an index, then serves results it considers relevant to a query. Google describes these as crawling, indexing, and serving, and notes that not every page passes through every stage. Google’s explanation of how Search works provides an overview.

Some add retrieval and generated answers
Generative search features can retrieve relevant information and use a language model to synthesize an answer. Google says its generative features rely on core Search systems and may use retrieval-augmented generation (also called grounding) and query fan-out, in which the system explores related searches. Microsoft describes Copilot Search as combining traditional search and generative AI, with summaries, direct answers, or other information layouts depending on the query. OpenAI’s launch description says ChatGPT search uses third-party search providers and content supplied directly by partners. These are provider descriptions of particular products, not evidence that every AI search service follows the same pipeline.

How is AI search different from Google?
The comparison depends on what “Google” means. Google Search is a conventional search engine that can also display AI Overviews; an AI search product may instead be a separate conversational service that searches the web. AI search does not necessarily replace a list of links: current examples retain or blend web retrieval, traditional results, and generated answers in different ways.
| Example | Product form | What the provider describes |
|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews | Generative AI feature in Google Search | May appear when Google’s systems determine generative AI could help, such as for understanding information from several sources. Google’s Search Help describes the feature and its limitations. |
| Copilot Search in Bing | AI-enhanced experience in Bing | Microsoft’s April 2025 announcement describes traditional and generative search together, with concise summaries, direct answers, cited sources, and related topics. Treat this as a dated product description, not a guarantee of today’s interface. Microsoft’s announcement. |
| ChatGPT search | Web search within a conversational AI service | OpenAI’s October 31, 2024 launch post describes natural-language queries, follow-up questions, source links, and use of third-party search providers and partner content; it records availability updates through February 2025. Features may have changed since then. OpenAI’s launch post. |
Are AI search results accurate?
Not always. A generated response can misstate facts, omit important context, or attach a citation that does not support the claim. Google explicitly warns that “AI Overviews can and will make mistakes” and advises checking important information in more than one place.
A 2024 study, Search Engines in an AI Era: The False Promise of Factual and Verifiable Source-Cited Responses, involved 21 participants and identified 16 answer-engine limitations. Its automated evaluation of You.com, Perplexity, and Bing Chat quantified limitations including hallucinations and inaccurate citations. Those figures describe that paper’s study and evaluation—not error rates for all users, all search services, or current versions. Read the study abstract.

How to check an answer
- Open the cited page rather than relying on the citation label alone.
- Check whether the page supports the specific sentence or figure in the generated answer.
- For consequential information, compare it with another credible source; a citation is not a guarantee of correctness.
