An “AI cyber defense model” is a descriptive term, not the name of one standardized product or framework. It generally refers to a system that analyzes security signals and behavior patterns to identify suspicious activity and connect related events. Attack reconstruction is the process of arranging those observations into an evidence-linked account of what may have happened over time—not a guaranteed, complete replay of an attacker’s actions.
That distinction matters: the system can help investigators see relationships that isolated alerts obscure, but its proposed story still depends on the records available, the confidence of its inferences, and analyst review.

What is an AI cyber defense model?
The phrase describes a category of security analysis rather than a single agreed model. In this context, such a system examines security telemetry—records and alerts from an organization’s environment—and looks for patterns that may indicate malicious behavior. It can then associate relevant observations into a larger incident picture.
The “AI” element is best understood as analysis and inference across evidence, not as a claim that a system independently knows everything an attacker did. A model may identify that several observations fit related behavior patterns or appear connected in time. The result is an investigative aid: a set of candidate relationships and a narrative that security staff can inspect against the underlying evidence.

This is useful because individual alerts often show only fragments. A suspicious file, an unusual process, a questionable network connection, or an unexpected account logon may each have benign explanations on its own. Connecting them can help an analyst decide whether they belong to the same intrusion, what sequence is plausible, and which activity deserves attention first.
How does it reconstruct an attack?
Reconstruction combines collected observations, behavioral categories, inferred relationships, and time into a coherent working account. The steps below describe the logic at a high level; implementations differ in what they can see and how they decide that two events are related.
1. Collect signals from the environment
The starting point is evidence available to the organization’s security tools. Relevant signals may include endpoint activity, network connections, suspicious files, processes, alerts, and relationships among assets. The wider the available view across an environment, the more opportunities there are to connect activity—but coverage alone does not establish that a connection is correct.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMissing or incomplete records constrain the story. An investigation can only evaluate activity represented in the evidence it has, and a quiet period in a reconstructed flow does not prove that nothing happened during that period. Microsoft’s technical discussion of incident correlation also notes that distinguishing malicious activity from legitimate logons can be difficult in complex networks.
2. Describe behavior in a shared vocabulary
Analysts and systems need a way to talk about what an observed action might represent. MITRE ATT&CK provides categories for adversary behavior, including tactics, techniques, and sub-techniques. A tactic describes why an action is taken; a technique describes how an adversary may achieve a goal; a sub-technique provides a more specific description where applicable. Observed procedures refer to the particular ways behavior has been carried out.

ATT&CK is a knowledge base built from real-world observations, not a transcript of any one organization’s incident. Mapping an event to a technique helps classify and communicate the behavior; it does not by itself prove that the event was malicious or that a particular attacker performed it. MITRE also describes ATT&CK as complementary to other models and frameworks, rather than a complete incident reconstruction method.
3. Estimate which observations belong together
The system then assesses whether the collected signals fit behavioral patterns and whether separate events are plausibly related. Microsoft describes an approach using probabilistic modeling, fuzzy mapping, and the combination of related events. These terms point to an important practical feature: a relationship may be a matter of likelihood rather than certainty.
For example, two events can appear related because their timing, behavior, or other available context fits a pattern. But similarity is not proof of common cause. Legitimate activity can resemble suspicious activity, and a valid account logon may coexist with unrelated alerts. The analyst needs access to supporting records and context to determine whether the association holds.
4. Arrange the evidence as a timeline, graph, or flow
Once relationships are proposed, a system can represent the incident as a sequence or graph. In a graph, events or alerts can be nodes, while observed connections or inferred relationships become edges. Timestamps help place activity in order. The graph can show both the observations and the proposed links among them, making it easier to inspect whether the account of the incident is plausible.
MITRE Attack Flow is a language and associated tooling for describing flows of ATT&CK techniques. Its representation can include actions, conditions, and relationships, helping defenders communicate the broader scope of an attack. It is distinct from ATT&CK’s catalog of behavior: ATT&CK supplies categories, while Attack Flow describes how actions and conditions can be connected into a flow. MITRE’s Attack Flow project page, published July 30, 2026, describes the project as helping defenders capture and communicate an attack’s scope.

5. Review the proposed story and take action
Analysts inspect the graph or flow, follow its links back to the evidence, correct mistaken associations, and retain uncertainty where the records do not settle a question. The resulting picture can help prioritize detection, mitigation, remediation, and communication. Attack Flow can also add context from ATT&CK, ATLAS, D3FEND, and the Fight Fraud Framework, according to MITRE’s project description.
This final review is not an optional polish step. It is how investigators distinguish a useful reconstruction from an attractive but unsupported diagram. A graph is only as trustworthy as its nodes, edges, ordering, and links to evidence.
What does ATT&CK contribute—and what does it not?
ATT&CK gives defenders a common structure for describing adversary behavior. That common vocabulary can make an investigation easier to discuss across analysts and help connect observations to known behavior categories. It does not supply the organization’s own logs, establish that a particular action occurred, or automatically arrange a specific incident into a complete sequence.
Its tactics should not be mistaken for a mandatory checklist or a fixed chronology. MITRE explains that ATT&CK tactics are unordered and that not every tactic occurs in every intrusion. By contrast, MITRE describes the Cyber Kill Chain as ordered high-level phases, while ATT&CK describes behavior at a lower level. A reconstruction should therefore follow the evidence in the case rather than force every event into a presumed sequence of all tactics.
MITRE says ATT&CK is updated bi-annually, so teams using it should check the current framework details when mapping behavior. A mapping is a useful classification, not a substitute for retaining the original event records and explaining why a particular category fits.

How are ATT&CK, Attack Flow, and AGE different?
| Resource | Primary role | How it relates to reconstruction |
|---|---|---|
| MITRE ATT&CK | Categorizes adversary tactics, techniques, sub-techniques, and observed procedures. | Provides a shared vocabulary for describing behavior; it is not a complete log of a particular incident. |
| MITRE Attack Flow | Language and associated tooling for describing connected flows of actions, conditions, and relationships, including flows of ATT&CK techniques. | Helps express how behaviors may fit together and communicate the broader incident scope. |
| MITRE AGE graph publication | Addresses modeling and emulating multi-stage attacks. | Related to representing multi-stage behavior, but the available descriptions do not establish that AGE, ATT&CK, and Attack Flow are interchangeable. |
These resources address related problems at different levels. None is established in the cited material as the universal “AI cyber defense model,” and they should not be treated as synonyms. The term “AI cyber defense model” remains descriptive unless a specific vendor or author defines it more narrowly.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What can a reconstruction tell an investigator?
A useful reconstruction can turn a collection of isolated observations into a working hypothesis about scope and sequence. It may help show which alerts appear connected, which assets or behaviors are implicated in the available evidence, and where additional investigation could clarify the account. That can make prioritization and incident communication more practical than discussing each alert separately.
It cannot guarantee a full replay. Correlation reveals relationships among recorded observations and inferred behavior; it does not directly expose every action an attacker took. An omitted event may reflect a lack of visibility, an unrecorded action, or a modeling choice—not proof that the event did not occur. Likewise, an inferred edge indicates a proposed relationship, not necessarily a directly observed connection.
For that reason, readers of a reconstruction should distinguish at least three things: what the records directly show, what the system infers from those records, and what remains unknown. The visual clarity of a graph should not make these categories seem equally certain.

How should a team evaluate an approach?
There is no published benchmark in the cited material that establishes one reconstruction method as generally more accurate or effective. A practical evaluation should focus on what the system can observe, how it connects evidence, and whether investigators can audit its conclusions. The following questions are decision criteria, not a published scoring system.
Best Value
- Telemetry coverage: Which endpoint, network, cloud, and identity evidence can the system use? What parts of the environment are outside its view?
- Relationship method: Are associations rule-based, behavior-based, probabilistic, or human-curated? Can the analyst tell which kind of relationship is being shown?
- Representation: How are timestamps, assets, actions, conditions, and inferred links represented? Can the sequence be understood without implying more certainty than the data supports?
- Evidence and confidence: Can investigators inspect the records behind a node or edge and understand how confident the system is in an association?
- Operational use: Can findings inform detection, mitigation, remediation, and incident communication, and can analysts correct or annotate an inaccurate relationship?
These questions help separate a compelling visualization from a defensible investigation aid. A method that shows many connections is not necessarily better if it obscures the evidence behind them or fails to preserve uncertainty.
A vendor-described example: 16 alerts in one incident
In a June 10, 2020 technical article, Microsoft described a PARINACOTA ransomware case in which Microsoft 365 Defender correlated 16 distinct alerts into one incident. The alerts included brute-force activity, suspicious files, lateral movement, and ransomware deployment. The example illustrates how multiple signals can be consolidated into an incident view, but it is a vendor-described case, not independent validation or a general measure of performance.
The figure of 16 refers to distinct alerts in that specific incident as described by Microsoft in 2020. It should not be read as a typical alert count, an accuracy rate, or evidence that every attack can be reconstructed with the same completeness. The article is useful as an illustration of the approach it documents, not as evidence of current platform features or a neutral comparison among products.
What makes an attack graph trustworthy?
Trust comes from traceability and disciplined interpretation, not from the use of AI or a graph format by itself. Before relying on a reconstructed flow to make decisions, an investigator should be able to answer:
- Which records directly support each event or alert in the flow?
- Which links are observed, and which are inferred?
- What timestamps and ordering assumptions shape the proposed sequence?
- What context supports classifying an event as suspicious rather than legitimate?
- Where is the confidence low, the evidence incomplete, or an alternative explanation plausible?
- What investigative or response decision follows from the flow, and can that decision be revisited if the evidence changes?
These checks guard against turning a hypothesis into a claim of certainty. A reconstruction is most useful when it helps a team decide what to examine next while keeping the underlying evidence visible and the unresolved questions explicit.
Bottom line
An AI cyber defense model can help reconstruct an attack by correlating security signals, mapping behavior to shared categories, estimating relationships, and arranging events into a timeline or graph. The result is an evidence-linked investigative account—not a guaranteed replay. ATT&CK helps name behavior; Attack Flow helps describe how actions and conditions connect. In every case, analysts need to verify the supporting records, distinguish observed facts from inferred links, and preserve uncertainty where the evidence leaves gaps.
