An AI agent attack targets how an AI agent interprets instructions and uses its connected tools, data, or permissions. A traditional bot attack usually uses automated software to send requests or traffic for abuse such as credential stuffing, scraping, spam, fraud, or denial of service. The categories can overlap: a hijacked agent may itself send phishing messages or help carry out a conventional cyberattack.
What is an AI agent attack?
An AI agent can pursue a goal by planning, using tools, retaining or consulting memory, and taking actions in connected systems. An attack on an agent exploits or manipulates that behavior or its integrations—not merely the fact that software generated an incorrect answer. The exposure therefore includes the agent’s instructions and model output, but also the data it can access, tools it can invoke, and authority delegated to it. OWASP’s Agentic AI security resources discuss these risks, including overly permissive tools and privilege escalation.

A common example is agent hijacking through indirect prompt injection. NIST describes an attacker placing malicious instructions in content the agent may process, such as a website, file, or email. That material can look like ordinary task content while attempting to divert the agent from the user’s goal. NIST calls this a type of indirect prompt injection in its technical discussion of agent-hijacking evaluations.

NIST’s evaluation tasks included downloading and running a program from an untrusted URL, sending cloud files to an unknown recipient, and sending personalized phishing messages. An injection weakness is not the same as a realized incident: in NIST’s test framework, a hijack counts when the agent completes the attacker’s requested task in the scenario.

What is a traditional bot attack?
An internet bot is software that automates tasks online. Bots can be useful or malicious depending on their purpose and the site owner’s preferences. Cloudflare’s educational overview of bot attacks lists malicious uses including credential stuffing, web or content scraping, denial of service, brute-force password attempts, spam, email harvesting, and click fraud.
In a conventional bot attack, the immediate target is commonly a website, API, account system, or other service exposed to automated requests or traffic. The attacker uses scripts or distributed devices to repeat actions at scale. The defining concern is abusive automation against the service, rather than an AI agent being persuaded to misuse its own access.
How do AI agent attacks differ from bot attacks?
| Aspect | AI agent attack | Traditional malicious bot attack |
|---|---|---|
| Primary target | The agent’s instruction handling, connected data, memory, tools, or delegated authority. OWASP describes agentic-system risks in its security resources. | A website, API, account system, or other service exposed to automated requests or traffic. See Cloudflare’s bot-attack overview. |
| Typical mechanism | Direct or indirect prompt injection, agent hijacking, tool misuse, or excessive permissions. See NIST’s agent-hijacking evaluation. | Automated scripts or distributed bots carrying out credential stuffing, scraping, brute force, spam, or denial of service. See Cloudflare’s examples. |
| Typical outcome | The agent takes an unintended action through its available access, potentially including code execution, data exfiltration, or phishing. See NIST’s evaluation examples. | Account takeover attempts, copied content, unwanted activity, fraud, or service disruption. See Cloudflare’s overview. |
| Useful defensive focus | Restrict tools and permissions, treat external content as untrusted, and test the entire agent workflow. OWASP provides agent security guidance. | Detect and manage abusive automated traffic while accounting for legitimate bots and human users. See Cloudflare’s bot material. |
| Can the labels overlap? | Yes. A compromised agent may perform conventional malicious tasks, such as sending phishing messages. | Yes. Bots can be a tool within a broader attack chain. The labels describe different aspects of an attack, not mutually exclusive categories. |
The simplest distinction is the point of exploitation: an agent attack turns the agent’s behavior or access against its intended purpose; a traditional bot attack uses automation to abuse a service or its users. “Bot” describes an automated actor or method, while “agent attack” describes a threat exploiting an AI agent. A hijacked agent could use automation and become part of a bot-like attack chain.

What do published agent-hijacking tests show?
NIST’s Center for AI Standards and Innovation (CAISI) reported results from a particular AgentDojo-based evaluation of an upgraded Claude 3.5 Sonnet model on held-out Workspace tasks. The figures below describe that test, not the prevalence of attacks in production or the general performance of current AI models.
- NIST reported an 11% baseline attack success rate and an 81% success rate for the strongest newly developed attack in that evaluation.
- Across five injection tasks, attack success averaged 57% on one attempt and reached 80% after 25 attempts. The multiple-attempt result reflects repeated opportunities to succeed in that test, not a single-attempt rate.
NIST also found that task-specific success and impact can differ substantially. A successful action that sends a benign email is not equivalent in consequence to exfiltrating data or running a malicious script. An aggregate success rate alone cannot describe the severity of what an agent is induced to do.
How can organizations reduce agent-attack risk?
Limit what the agent can do
Give an agent only the tools and data permissions its task requires. Separate sensitive actions from routine ones, and avoid broad or standing privileges where narrower access will work. This limits the potential impact if instructions are manipulated.

Treat retrieved content as untrusted
Web pages, documents, and messages can contain instructions intended to hijack an agent. Treat them as data to evaluate, not as authority to override the user’s request or the system’s rules. Filtering alone should not be treated as a guarantee that malicious instructions will be recognized.
Put controls around consequential actions
Use deterministic application-side checks for actions such as sending files externally, running code, or messaging people. Add human review where the consequences warrant it. A confirmation step can reduce risk, but it does not by itself eliminate prompt injection or other weaknesses.
Test the whole workflow and retest after changes
Evaluate the complete path from prompts and retrieved content through memory, tools, policies, and final actions—not just the model’s responses in isolation. OWASP’s Agentic AI guidance and security resources emphasize practical secure design and testing. Repeat assessments after material changes to prompts, tools, memory, retrieval, policies, or model providers.

Include adaptive and repeated attack attempts
Test task-specific outcomes, not only whether an agent produces suspicious text. Consider whether an attacker can retry: NIST’s evaluation found that repeated attempts changed measured attack success, and newly developed attacks outperformed the tested baseline. The test results are a reason to evaluate retry conditions in your own system, not a prediction of its exact risk.
Keep conventional bot controls for the services around the agent
Where an agent interacts with public websites or APIs, account protections and controls for abusive automated traffic still matter. Those measures address attacks against exposed services; they do not, by themselves, prevent malicious instructions in content the agent reads or protect internal tools the agent can use.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →When should you call something an agent attack?
Use the term when an attacker is trying to exploit or manipulate an AI agent’s instructions, integrations, or delegated authority to cause unintended behavior. A mistaken answer or an ordinary software error is not automatically an attack. The distinction is useful for choosing defenses: protect the agent’s decision-and-action path, while also maintaining the bot and account defenses needed for the services it touches.
