An AAB file is an Android App Bundle: a file developers use to publish an Android app, not a file you can install directly on a phone. To use the app, get it from its official store or ask its publisher for an installable APK. Developers can turn an AAB into APKs for local testing with Google’s bundletool.
What an AAB file is
An Android App Bundle (AAB) is a publishing package containing app code and resources arranged in modules. Its filename ends in .aab. Developers upload it to a compatible app store or process it with development tools; Android devices install APK files, not AAB files. Android Developers describes App Bundles as a publishing format.

When a store such as Google Play processes an AAB, it generates APKs suited to the user’s device, including the app’s base and any required feature or configuration APKs. This lets the distributor deliver the relevant resources rather than asking users to install the bundle itself. Google’s App Bundle guide explains the process.

No. Renaming an AAB or tapping it in a file manager does not make it installable. Google’s Android Developers FAQ says that App Bundles are for publishing and cannot be installed on Android devices. The FAQ also clarifies that AABs do not prevent users from sideloading APKs: the limitation is the file format, not a ban on installing APKs outside a store.

- If you are a regular user: ask the app’s publisher for its official store listing or an APK provided through a legitimate distribution channel. Do not install an unknown APK just because someone supplied an AAB.

How developers can test an AAB on a connected device
Google’s bundletool converts an AAB into an APK set (a file ending in .apks), then installs the set to a connected Android device. The basic commands are:

bundletooland make sure your Android development environment can see the test device. Use the official bundletool instructions for current installation and device setup details. - Run
build-apkswith the path to your bundle and the output path for the APK set. Replaceapp.aabandapp.apksif your files have different names. - Run
install-apksto deploy the generated set to the connected device.
For a particular device, build using the connected-device option or provide a device specification, as described in the official bundletool documentation. Generated APKs need signing information for deployment. If you do not provide it, bundletool attempts to use a debug key; this is a testing route, not a substitute for signing a release for publication.
Opening or inspecting bundle contents
An AAB is a structured development and distribution package, not a runnable app. If your goal is to check what the bundle produces, generate APKs with bundletool and inspect the resulting output. See the App Bundle guide and bundletool documentation.

Publishing an AAB through Google Play
For store distribution, developers upload a signed AAB through Play Console. Google Play generates the APKs delivered to users’ devices; users install the app through Google Play rather than opening the AAB. Follow the current Android App Bundle publishing guide for the store workflow.
Signing is not optional
Installable APKs must be signed. Android’s command-line build guide specifies jarsigner for signing an app bundle and notes that apksigner cannot sign an AAB. Use the instructions for your actual output format: signing an AAB and signing an APK are not interchangeable steps. See Android’s command-line build documentation.

Common problems and fixes
- The phone says it cannot open or install the AAB: that is expected; the phone installs APKs. Get the app from its official store, or if you are testing your own build, generate and install an APK set with
bundletool. bundletool install-apkscannot find a device: check that the device is connected and available to your Android development setup, then retry. For device-specific output, use the connected-device option or a device specification when building the APK set.- Installation fails due to signing: provide suitable signing information when generating APKs, or use the debug-key behavior for local testing. For release publication, sign the AAB using the documented bundle workflow; do not try to sign the AAB with
apksigner. - You only have an AAB from someone else and need the app: ask the publisher for the store listing or a legitimate APK distribution. The AAB itself is not an installable substitute.
