It lets you launch virtual servers called instances, choose their operating-system image and resource profile, and configure networking and storage—without buying the underlying physical server. What you pay depends on the instance, how long it runs, and the storage and other resources attached to it.
What Amazon EC2 provides
EC2 supplies computing capacity in Amazon Web Services (AWS). You can launch one virtual server or many, configure their network access and security, and manage their storage. An instance is a virtual server, not a computer that you own. AWS’s Amazon EC2 overview describes the service and its main components.

Launching an instance means making several related choices. An Amazon Machine Image (AMI) is a preconfigured template that supplies the operating system and other software. The instance type determines the server’s resource profile. Storage, login access, and network rules are configured separately.
Core EC2 components
- AMI: The template used to launch an instance.
- Instance type: The combination of compute, memory, storage, networking, and, for some types, accelerator resources.
- Amazon EBS volume: Persistent storage for data you want to retain independently of an instance’s running state.
- Instance store: Temporary storage; its data is deleted when the instance is stopped, hibernated, or terminated.
- Key pair: Credentials used for secure access to an instance.
- Security group: A virtual firewall that controls permitted network traffic.
How to choose an instance type
Instance types are organized into families with different balances of compute, memory, storage, networking, and specialized accelerators. The right choice depends on what the application actually does: a memory-heavy workload may need a different profile from a compute-heavy one. Compare the available profiles in AWS’s EC2 instance types reference.
#1 Best Overall
- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Use the workload’s own benchmark to evaluate a candidate rather than choosing by family name alone. AWS notes that you can change the instance type later if requirements change, though the change may require operational planning. Check the exact Region and Availability Zone where you plan to deploy: not every type is offered in every Region, and a type available in a Region may not be offered in every Availability Zone. Consult AWS’s instance types by Region reference.
Questions to answer before choosing
- What are the application’s compute, memory, storage, network, and accelerator needs?
- Does it need consistent performance, and what storage behavior does it require?
- Is the candidate type available in the target Region and Availability Zone?
- Can the workload tolerate interruption, and how certain must capacity be?
- What is the total cost of instance runtime, storage, data transfer, and other associated resources?
How EC2 runtime billing works
AWS says instance billing begins when an instance transitions to running. It pauses when the instance transitions to stopped, resumes when it starts again, and ends after termination transitions to shutting down. These rules describe instance compute charges—not every cost in a deployment. Provisioned resources such as storage may continue to incur separate charges while an instance is stopped. See AWS’s instance and lifecycle billing documentation and EC2 pricing page.

AWS’s pricing page, accessed in 2026, states that eligible instances and operating systems are billed per second with a 60-second minimum. Eligibility matters: do not assume every configuration uses that billing rule. The same page advertises Savings Plans savings of up to 72% and Spot discounts of up to 90% compared with On-Demand. Those are published maximum comparisons, not guaranteed savings or a quote for a particular workload.

Purchasing options and what they are for
| Option | How it works | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| On-Demand | Pay for usage without a long-term commitment. | Flexible or uncertain usage where you do not want a commitment. |
| Savings Plans | Commit to a consistent hourly usage amount for one or three years in exchange for reduced rates. | Usage you expect to sustain and can commit to at the agreed level. |
| Reserved Instances | Commit to a configuration and Region for one or three years. | Planned usage that fits the chosen configuration and Region. |
| Spot Instances | Use spare AWS capacity; AWS advertises discounts of up to 90% against On-Demand, but the maximum is not guaranteed. | Workloads that can tolerate interruption. |
| Dedicated Hosts | Use a single-tenant physical server dedicated to you. | Requirements such as server-bound software licensing or dedicated host control. |
| Dedicated Instances | Run instances on hardware dedicated to a single customer. | Workloads that require single-tenant instance options. |
| Capacity Reservations | Reserve capacity in a particular Availability Zone. | Workloads that need capacity assurance in that location. |
These options address different needs: price commitment, interruption tolerance, capacity assurance, tenancy, and licensing are not interchangeable. AWS details them in its EC2 purchasing options documentation. To estimate a real deployment, enter the Region, operating system, instance type, runtime schedule, EBS configuration, data transfer, and other workload assumptions in the AWS pricing resources; the maximum advertised discounts are not a substitute for an estimate.

Is EC2 free?
There is no single free-use assumption that applies to every AWS account. AWS’s EC2 launch documentation, accessed in 2026, describes different Free Tier eligibility based on account creation date. Accounts created on or after July 15, 2025 have specified instance types and a six-month or credit-exhaustion condition; accounts created before that date have separate terms. Confirm the current eligibility shown for your account before launching, and review AWS’s EC2 launch parameters and Free Tier notes.
