If your Windows SSD is filling up and the visible folders do not explain why, check Settings > System > Storage before deleting anything. Windows can use space for reserved storage, hibernation, paging, restore points, update files and caches; there is no single hidden feature responsible on every PC. Identify the category first, then choose a fix that does not remove a feature you rely on.
Find out what is using space on your C: drive
Open Settings > System > Storage and inspect the breakdown for the system drive. The largest category is a better starting point than guessing from a full-drive warning. Microsoft explains that Windows reserves storage for temporary files, caches and other data, and may release that space when the device is low: Storage settings in Windows.

Possible system-managed contributors include reserved storage, hiberfil.sys (hibernation), pagefile.sys (virtual memory), restore points, update staging, logs and caches. Their sizes and behavior depend on the device and what Windows is doing. A low-space alert alone does not identify which one is responsible.

Use Storage Sense for temporary files
If Storage shows temporary files or cleanup recommendations as the main opportunity, review the selections in Windows before removing anything. Storage Sense can clear selected temporary files on the system drive, but it does not automatically manage Downloads or cloud content unless you configure those options. See Microsoft’s guide to Storage Sense.

- Capacity Display Variance: 1TB external ssd often appears as around 931GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 1 TB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
- 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
- Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
Previous installation files can also appear as a cleanup option after an upgrade. Removing them may reclaim space, but can affect the ability to return to the previous Windows installation. Check the description shown by Windows and keep files you may still need.
Check whether hibernation is the culprit
hiberfil.sys supports hibernation. Its size varies, so there is no dependable number of gigabytes to expect across PCs. If Storage settings or a trusted disk-usage view points to this file, choose among keeping hibernation enabled, using a reduced hiberfile, or turning hibernation off.

- Important Notes for PS/Xbox Gaming Devices: You can play last-gen games (PS4 / Xbox One) directly from an external hard drive. However, to play current-gen games (PS5 / Xbox Series X|S), you must copy them to the console's internal SSD first. The external drive is great for keeping your library on hand, but it can't run the new games.
| Choice | Command | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Keep current hibernation configuration | No change | Preserves your current hibernation behavior and file. |
| Use a reduced hiberfile | powercfg /h /type reduced |
Reduces the hiberfile; hibernation is not available in this reduced configuration. |
| Turn hibernation off | powercfg /h off |
Removes the hibernation file and disables hibernation. |
Run the chosen command in an elevated Command Prompt or Terminal. Microsoft documents these options in its Compact OS and hibernation-file guidance. Do not manually delete hiberfil.sys; use Windows’ supported power configuration command if you have confirmed it is the cause.

pagefile.sys serves a different purpose: it supports virtual memory. Its size can vary with memory and system use. Disabling the page file is not a routine space-saving fix and may impair applications or system behavior. If it appears unusually large, investigate the system’s memory and configuration rather than deleting the file.

Allow update-related space to settle
Windows may need temporary space while preparing or installing an update, and the amount varies by update path and installed features. If the storage increase began during a feature update, let the update finish and check Storage again before making permanent changes. Microsoft notes that Windows may temporarily disable hiberfil.sys and pagefile.sys during an update, then re-enable them afterward. Its Windows update storage guidance explains that requirements vary; examples on that page are not a guarantee for an individual PC.
If there is not enough room to proceed, Windows update workflows can use external storage in some circumstances. Microsoft also describes removable storage as an option for expanding the space available for personal files: free up space for Windows updates. An external SSD adds capacity or can help temporarily with an update, but it does not remove space already occupied by hibernation, restore data or caches.

Review restore-point storage without giving up recovery casually
If restore data is the large category, inspect the controls for the restore feature that is actually enabled on your PC. Windows point-in-time restore and classic System Restore are distinct mechanisms, so their settings and behavior should not be assumed to match. Microsoft’s current page for restoring a PC to an earlier point in time lists a default maximum usage of 2% of disk for that feature on the configurations it describes; this is not a universal limit for every restore mechanism.

Reducing the allowed storage can leave fewer recovery points available. Restoring to an earlier point can also revert later changes, so weigh recovery value against the space you expect to reclaim instead of reflexively disabling protection.

Choose a fix based on the category
- Temporary files or cleanup recommendations: review the items and Storage Sense settings, especially Downloads and cloud-file options.
- Hibernation file: keep, reduce or disable hibernation depending on whether you use it; use the supported command rather than deleting the file manually.
- Page file: do not disable it as a general cleanup measure.
- Restore data: inspect the applicable recovery settings and consider adjusting storage only if you accept the effect on available recovery points.
- Update-time spike: let the update complete and recheck space before making lasting changes.
- Not enough room for files or an update: move personal files or use removable storage for additional capacity; this is separate from fixing the system category using space.
Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft. If instructions on your screen differ, confirm whether the PC is running Windows 10 or Windows 11 before following version-specific guidance.
