AI super-resolution rebuilds a higher-resolution image from a game frame rendered at a lower resolution. On PlayStation, the names depend on the console: PS5 Pro uses PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), while Sony announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) for supported games on standard PS5 on October 1, 2026. These techniques can help games show finer detail or maintain image stability while balancing performance, but an upscaled image is not the same as rendering every output pixel natively—and results vary by game.
What AI super-resolution does
A game first renders a frame at an internal resolution. An upscaler then uses that image to reconstruct a larger output image, rather than requiring the console to calculate every pixel at the final output resolution directly. For example, Ubisoft describes a 1080p game image being upscaled toward 2160p; that illustrates the process, not a fixed resolution used by every PS5 game. Ubisoft’s explanation of Assassin’s Creed Shadows on PS5 Pro contrasts AI-based reconstruction with traditional analytical approaches such as temporal anti-aliasing upscaling (TAA/TAAU). Sony describes PSSR as an AI library that analyzes game images pixel by pixel during upscaling. Sony’s February 2026 explanation of PSSR

The goal is to make a lower-resolution input look more detailed and stable at the output size. How well it works depends on the image being supplied, the reconstruction method, and how the developer integrates it into that particular game.

Sony’s October 1, 2026 announcement distinguishes two implementations. PSSR is the AI upscaler for PS5 Pro; QSSR is a separate, streamlined option designed for supported games on standard PS5. Sony calls QSSR an additional performance tier, not a blanket upgrade that enables PSSR across all standard-PS5 games. Sony’s announcement of AI upscaling for PS5

| PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) | PS5 Pro | Available in supported games. Sony said more than 50 PS5 Pro titles had used PSSR to boost effective resolution as of February 27, 2026; that is a dated figure, not a current October 2026 total. Sony, February 27, 2026 |
| QSSR (Quick Spectral Super Resolution) | Standard PS5 | Announced October 1, 2026. Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first games to use it, with QSSR offered as an additional graphics option. Sony, October 1, 2026 |
Support is game-specific, and titles may expose different graphics options. Having a console with the relevant technology does not mean every game uses it.
How upscaling can affect image quality and performance
Fine detail and image stability
When a developer’s implementation works well, the intended improvements include clearer fine detail and less shimmer or flicker in thin geometry, foliage, hair, fabric, and moving objects. Those benefits are most useful in busy scenes or during motion, when details can otherwise look unstable. They are not guaranteed in every title.

For example, IO Interactive described upgraded PSSR in 007 First Light as improving clarity and stability, including detail in hair and fabric. That is the developer’s account of its game, not an independent benchmark or a promise for all PS5 Pro titles. IO Interactive’s 007 First Light PSSR explanation

Rendering fewer pixels internally can free resources for frame rate or other graphical effects. Ubisoft explains that reducing render resolution can help frame rate, and that dynamic resolution scaling may lower the input resolution in demanding moments. The tradeoff can be reduced clarity or visual artifacts. Whether a game uses that flexibility for smoother performance, image quality, or other effects is a developer decision. Upscaled 4K is not native 4K rendering
“4K” can describe the image sent to a display without describing the resolution at which the game rendered its frame. In one specific example, Sony said The Last of Us Part I and The Last of Us Part II Remastered would have a PS5 Pro mode rendering at 1440p and upscaling to 4K through PSSR while targeting 60 frames per second. That is a mode announced for those two games, not a general PS5 Pro performance guarantee. Sony’s developer examples for PS5 Pro
To judge a particular game, distinguish its internal render resolution from its output resolution, then check its graphics mode and whether it uses PSSR or QSSR. An output labeled 4K alone does not establish that every pixel was natively rendered at 4K.

What to check in a game or PS5 Pro settings
- Check the game’s graphics menu. Look for a resolution, performance, or graphics-quality mode and any explicit PSSR or QSSR option. Menus and available choices vary by title.
- On PS5 Pro, check the system setting. Sony’s optional “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” setting applies to games that already support PSSR; it does not add PSSR support to unsupported games. Sony says the effect varies by title and advises that the setting can be switched off if unexpected visual effects appear. Sony’s March 2026 rollout and setting details
- Compare the result in motion. If the image looks unstable or produces unexpected effects, try the game’s other graphics mode or, on PS5 Pro, turn off the optional enhancement setting. A game’s own implementation and controls remain distinct from the console-level setting.
What AI super-resolution does not promise
- It does not make every PS5 game render natively at 4K.
- It does not guarantee a higher frame rate; developers can use the available rendering resources in different ways.
- It does not guarantee sharper images in every scene or eliminate artifacts. Outcomes depend on the game, input image, implementation, and settings.
- It is not a console-wide switch that applies to every game: the title must support the relevant technology.
