It extends conventional application observability with visibility into model calls, prompts and responses, agent decisions, and tool use. The term is an engineering description, not a formally standardized definition.
What does AI observability mean?
Google Cloud describes observability as collecting and analyzing telemetry to understand an application’s state and operating environment. It describes agent observability as gaining insight into an AI agent’s internal state and behavior. Applying those ideas to AI applications, AI observability combines operational visibility with ways to investigate model and agent behavior.

It is broader than a dashboard or a collection of alerts. A dashboard can show selected measurements; observability is the ability to use telemetry to work out what a system did and how its components behaved. The same application still needs conventional visibility into its software and infrastructure. AI observability adds detail about the model layer and the actions built around it.
Google Cloud notes that AI agents can be non-deterministic and complex, making observability useful for understanding, debugging, evaluating, and improving their performance, safety, and reliability. That is especially relevant when a request passes through several model calls or an agent chooses among tools.

How is it different from traditional observability?
Traditional application observability focuses on application behavior, health, and performance. AI observability retains those concerns and adds context needed to investigate model-driven behavior. An HTTP error or slow request may explain a service problem; it may not explain why an assistant gave an irrelevant answer or called an unsuitable tool.
| Area | Examples of what to inspect |
|---|---|
| Application and operations | Latency, errors, and the behavior of application components. |
| Model interactions | Model calls, prompts, responses, and their relationship to the request. |
| Agent actions | Tool or API calls, call counts, outcomes, latency, and exchanged data where capture is appropriate. |
| Output quality | Whether responses meet criteria such as correctness, grounding, safety, or usefulness. |
These areas overlap in a real system. A trace can connect a slow tool call to a delayed answer, while an evaluation can assess whether the answer met a task-specific quality criterion. Neither replaces the other.
What should engineers track in an AI application?
Requests, model calls, and traces
A trace follows work through related operations so that engineers can see how a request progressed. Langfuse describes traces that include prompts, responses, tool calls, and the relationships between them. For an agent, useful trace context includes which steps occurred and how those steps relate to the final response.

Prompts and responses
Prompt and response data can help teams assess an agent’s quality and decision-making. These records may contain sensitive user or business information, so decide deliberately what to capture and who can access it. The cited documentation does not establish a universal retention period or privacy policy; those controls depend on the application and its obligations.
Tool and API activity
Record which external tools or APIs an agent invokes, how many calls it makes, whether each succeeds, and how long it takes. Where privacy controls permit, retaining the exchanged data can help explain an unexpected result. A trace that records only the final answer may miss the tool failure or unexpected action that caused it.
Operational signals
Track latency, errors, and token usage alongside the AI-specific context. Google Cloud documents deriving error rate, latency, and token-usage metrics from trace data that follows OpenTelemetry GenAI semantic conventions. These are useful metric types, not published performance benchmarks or proof of answer quality.

Evaluation signals
Evaluation checks outputs against explicit criteria; a trace alone only shows what happened. Datadog’s explainer frames AI output assessment in terms of correctness, grounding, safety, and usefulness. That is vendor framing, not a universal standard. Teams should define criteria that reflect their own tasks and risks—for example, whether a response cites approved material or whether an action stays within allowed boundaries.

- Map tasks and failure modes. Identify the user-visible work the system is meant to do and the failures that matter, such as a failed tool call, an unsupported answer, or an excessive delay.
- Instrument the request path. Capture application and agent steps, model calls, and tool invocations in a way that lets related events be correlated as traces. Google Cloud documents OpenTelemetry instrumentation and Cloud Trace handling for spans that follow GenAI semantic conventions.
- Collect operational measures. Include latency, errors, and token usage so engineers can diagnose service and model-call behavior alongside the trace context.
- Define evaluations. Choose quality and safety criteria for the application, then evaluate outputs against them. Instrumentation does not itself establish that an answer is correct.
- Set data controls. Define what prompt, response, and tool data may be captured, how it is redacted, who may access it, and how long it is retained.
- Investigate and watch for regressions. Use traces to reconstruct failures and evaluations to identify changes in output quality after updates to prompts, models, tools, or application logic.
OpenTelemetry GenAI semantic conventions provide a documented way to structure AI-related trace attributes and events. Google Cloud also documents using this data to generate AI-resource metrics. Do not assume that every provider or observability product supports identical fields or behaves the same way; verify the instrumentation and data that your own stack exposes.

Start with the system you need to inspect, not a vendor label. Google Cloud documents agent observability, OpenTelemetry-based instrumentation examples, GenAI conventions, and AI-resource metrics. Datadog presents AI observability through model, data, and response behavior, including output-quality considerations. Langfuse documents traces as well as evaluation, prompt management, experiments, and dashboards. These are vendor descriptions of capabilities, not an independent ranking or head-to-head assessment.

Compare options against the requirements that affect your implementation:
- Existing telemetry stack: Can the tool fit with the team’s APM and telemetry infrastructure?
- Frameworks and providers: Does it instrument the frameworks and model providers the application actually uses?
- Trace depth: Can it connect model calls with agent decisions and external tool steps?
- Evaluation workflow: Does the team need traces alone, or also evaluations, prompt management, and experiments?
- Data handling: Can the team apply its required storage, access, redaction, and retention controls?
- Operating cost: What cost and maintenance overhead accompany collection, storage, queries, and evaluation?
