A wireless music adapter adds a wireless way to send audio to an existing stereo or speaker system. Your phone or computer connects to the adapter over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi; the adapter typically connects to the stereo with a physical audio cable. So the music source can be wireless even though part of the setup is still wired.
What a wireless music adapter does
The adapter gives compatible audio equipment a wireless input it does not have built in. Philips describes its Bluetooth Hi-Fi adapter as letting a smartphone stream music to a Hi-Fi or speaker system even when that system has no Bluetooth feature: Philips Support’s explanation.

In a typical setup, the phone sends audio wirelessly to the adapter, then the adapter passes it to the stereo through an audio output and cable. The adapter does not necessarily make every connection wireless.

Bluetooth receiver or Wi-Fi streamer?
| Type | How it connects | Best suited to | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth music receiver | Pairs with a nearby phone or other Bluetooth source, then connects to the stereo through a wired audio output. | Playing audio from a personal device without adding network-based features. | Match the receiver’s output—such as 3.5 mm or RCA—to an available stereo input. TP-Link documents both connections for its HA100 receiver, which is marked end of life: TP-Link HA100. |
| Wi-Fi music streamer | Joins a home network and sends network-based audio to the connected sound system. | Network playback, app control, or multiroom listening when the specific product supports those features. | Check supported apps and protocols, network requirements, setup steps, and outputs. Audioengine’s B-Fi page lists RCA and optical outputs and describes Wi-Fi multiroom streaming and stereo pairing; the product is discontinued: Audioengine B-Fi. |
Bluetooth is generally the more direct fit when you want to pair a nearby device. Wi-Fi matters when you want network playback or multiroom functions, but those capabilities depend on the particular streamer.

How to connect a phone to an older stereo
- Check the stereo’s inputs. Look for an available input that matches the adapter’s output, such as RCA or 3.5 mm. Some streamers also offer optical output; verify that both devices support the connection you plan to use.
- Connect the adapter to the stereo. Use the appropriate cable and select the corresponding input on the stereo.
- Power and set up the adapter. Follow the model’s instructions; Wi-Fi streamers may require network configuration or a companion app.
- Connect the audio source. For Bluetooth, pair the phone with the receiver. For Wi-Fi, connect the streamer to the home network and use its supported playback method.
- Play audio and check the stereo’s input and volume. If there is no sound, confirm the cable is seated, the correct stereo input is selected, and the phone or streamer is sending audio to the intended device.
What to check before choosing one
- Wireless method: Choose Bluetooth for straightforward pairing with a nearby device; consider Wi-Fi if you need network streaming or multiroom playback.
- Physical compatibility: The adapter’s output must match an available input on the stereo. Do not assume that two devices support the same jack or digital connection.
- Features and setup: Confirm the exact model’s supported services, apps, protocols, network needs, and whether it requires a companion app.
- Current availability: Product status can change. The TP-Link HA100 is identified as end of life and Audioengine B-Fi as discontinued, so treat them as examples of adapter types, not current buying recommendations.
