A wireless heat map is a color-coded view of radio-frequency conditions across a physical space, usually drawn over a building floor plan. The colors represent a selected measurement or prediction—such as Wi-Fi signal strength, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), or noise floor—not temperature. To interpret one, check its metric, legend, frequency band, and whether its data was measured or modeled.
What a wireless heat map shows
A wireless heat map lays information about Wi-Fi or other radio-frequency (RF) conditions over a map of a room, floor, or facility. In a coverage view, colors commonly indicate the strength or reach of access-point signals. Other maps show SNR, noise floor, signal-to-interference ratio, or another selected metric.

There is no universal meaning for a particular color. A color is meaningful only in relation to the map’s metric, units, and legend. Two maps that use different metrics—or different scales for the same metric—cannot be compared by color alone.
How a wireless heat map is made
A map may be based on measurements collected at a site, a prediction generated by survey software, or a combination of the two. In either case, the result depends on the information and assumptions used to create it.

- Prepare a floor plan. Use a plan with a correctly set scale. Cisco cautions that if the plan is calibrated incorrectly, a later correction cannot repair survey data captured at the wrong scale.
- Set the survey scope. Identify the spaces and frequency bands to include, along with the access points or network assumptions being evaluated.
- Collect measurements or model propagation. Survey software can gather RF readings across the site, or estimate coverage from the floor plan, access-point information, and modeled obstacles. The measurement equipment and any adapter used depend on the software and computer; an external adapter is not established as a universal requirement.
- Choose a metric and target. The software renders a map for a selected view, such as coverage against a target RSSI, SNR against a target SNR, or noise floor. Cisco recommends making the targets and requested deliverables explicit.
For modeled maps, the placement of walls and other obstacles, as well as the software’s internal calculation grid, can affect estimated attenuation. A map is therefore evidence about the conditions represented by its measurements or assumptions—not a guarantee of identical service at every point or moment.
How to read one before acting
Check the map’s context before treating a color as a coverage verdict. These details determine what the image actually says:

- Metric and legend: Is the view showing signal strength, SNR, noise floor, or another measure? What do the colors and units mean?
- Measured or predicted: Was the data collected at the site, modeled, or produced through a combination of methods?
- Band and access points: Which frequency band and which access points are included?
- Target: If the map shows whether a target is met, what RSSI, SNR, or noise value was selected? The appropriate target depends on the use case and device requirements; the sources do not establish one universal threshold.
- Area and scale: Which rooms or floors were surveyed, and is the floor plan calibrated correctly?
- Measurement and modeling detail: How were readings collected, how densely was the area sampled, and what assumptions were made about obstacles?
When comparing maps or survey tools, compare these attributes rather than judging the pictures by color. Cisco’s survey guidance also treats survey type, scope, target values, access-point hardware, tools, and adapters as details to clarify.
What it can—and cannot—tell you
A heat map can help identify apparent weak-coverage areas, see how signal conditions vary across a space, and inform access-point placement or troubleshooting. Cisco’s site-survey guidance treats coverage, interference, equipment placement, power, wiring, and survey type as distinct design considerations; one map should not be mistaken for a complete assessment of them all.

A coverage map alone does not establish throughput, roaming quality, the source of interference, or application performance. Those questions require the relevant measurements and context. Wi-Fi conditions also vary over time: Cisco’s Prime Infrastructure 3.10 user guide notes that WLANs are dynamic and nondeterministic, so coverage at a particular spot cannot be assumed to remain constant. Verify conditions directly when a design or troubleshooting decision depends on them.

A wireless site survey is the broader process of assessing RF conditions and planning or troubleshooting a wireless network. A heat map is one possible output of that process, not the survey itself. Survey deliverables may include separate coverage, SNR, and noise-floor views, each with its own metric and target.

- Dual Band WiFi Extender: Up to 44% more bandwidth than single band N300 WiFi extenders. Boost Internet WiFi coverage up to 1200 square feet and connects up to 30 devices(2.4GHz: 300Mbps; 5GHz: 433Mbps)
For example, Cisco’s deployment guidance discusses professional survey tools such as AirMagnet and Ekahau, while NetSpot describes visualizations for signal, SNR, signal-to-interference ratio, and secondary signal level. These are examples of tools and map types, not a universal recommendation: the right workflow depends on the site, the question being answered, and the measurement requirements.
