A Wi-Fi heat map is a color-coded picture of wireless signal or another radio-frequency (RF) measure across an area, usually a floor plan. The colors mean only what the map’s legend and thresholds say: a green patch is not automatically proof that Wi-Fi will work well there.
What does a Wi-Fi heat map show?
A heat map overlays a selected wireless metric on a map of a building or other area. The most common layer represents signal strength, often reported as received signal strength indicator (RSSI). Survey reports may also map signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) or noise floor. Cisco defines useful coverage in terms of whether client devices can connect with enough signal strength and quality to handle interference; what counts as enough depends on the devices and applications involved (Cisco’s site survey guidelines).

A heat map is a visualization, not a direct measure of application performance. It does not by itself prove that video calls will be stable, roaming will work smoothly, or a particular client will achieve a given throughput. Signal is one part of the picture; noise, interference, client behavior, and the application’s needs matter too.

There is no universal meaning for red, yellow, or green. The colors encode the chosen metric and thresholds configured in the survey or planning software. Check the legend, units, frequency band, and threshold before interpreting any area. Without those details, a color alone cannot tell you whether coverage meets your needs.

- Graph Access Point signal strength over time
- Support filters: WiFi band, Signal strength, Security and SSID
For example, Cisco’s site-survey guidance gives -67 dBm signal strength and 25 dB SNR as minimum recommendations for a voice-coverage use case. Those are not universal Wi-Fi requirements: Cisco notes that suitable requirements vary by client and application. Use thresholds tied to the actual devices and services the network must support.
How is a Wi-Fi heat map created?
Predictive map
A predictive map models expected RF coverage from a floor plan, access-point locations, antenna characteristics, obstacles, and other radio-frequency assumptions. It is useful for planning before equipment is installed, but it is an estimate rather than a measurement of the finished building. Cisco describes predictive surveys as software-based and typically performed without field measurements (site survey guidelines).

Added battery circuit management, more secure. Redesigned PCB, you can connect to mobile phone with Type C-Type C cable (original PCB needs OTG cable), see a clear HD image on your phone. Added a ABS case, which is protective and dust-proof. Disply: 2.8 inch TFT (320 x240).
- [IMPROVED FREQUENCY ALGORITHM] The improved frequency algorithm can use the odd harmonic extension of si5351 to support the measurement frequency up to 1.5GHz. The 9KHz-300MHz frequency range of the si5351 direct output provides better than 70dB dynamic, The extended 300M-900MHz band provides better than 60dB of dynamics, and the 900M-1.5GHz band is better than 40dB of dynamics.
- [MULTIPLE FUNCTIONS] The default firmware main function is used for antenna performance measurement. The TX/RX method can measure the complete S11 and S21 parameters. If you need to obtain S12 and S22, you need to manually replace the transceiver port wiring. The CH0 output level is increased to 0dBm when using the fundamental wave, resulting in more accurate reflection measurement.
- [SUPPORT ANDROID PHONE & PC SOFTSARE CONTROL] Designed a practical and simple control application on PC, you can download touchstone(SNP) files for radio design and simulation software. There is a PC interface that adds functionality and lets you work interactively on a bigger screen. Supports time domain analysis function (TDR). Compatible with most Android mobile phones, convenient for connecting to mobile phones. Support Windows Computer Control.
- [STRONG AND SECURE POWER SUPPLY] This VNA is battery powered or USB powered. Built in 650mAh battery, could work for 2 hours continuously. For longer measurement time, kindly connect an external power source. The product interface displays battery usage, providing a clear understanding of the power status.
The model’s inputs matter. Cisco’s documentation for Catalyst Center says 2D maps are approximations; building-material attenuation and RF reflections can affect real coverage beyond what a modeled map depicts (Catalyst Center floor-map guide). Review the floor plan, wall and obstacle assumptions, AP placement, antenna orientation, and RF model when judging a prediction.

In a passive survey, a survey client listens to access-point transmissions without associating with an AP. This can show where beacons are heard, but it does not capture uplink behavior, PHY-rate boundaries, or retransmissions, according to Cisco’s survey guidance and FAQ (site survey guidelines; Wireless Site Survey FAQ).

Active survey
An active survey associates the survey client with an AP and exchanges traffic. It can therefore reveal client-like link behavior, including data-rate changes and retransmissions, making it more informative for validation. Results still depend on the client and test setup; they should not be treated as identical to every user’s experience.
How accurate is a Wi-Fi heat map?
Accuracy depends on how the map was produced and how well its assumptions match the real environment. A predictive map may differ from installed coverage because the floor plan or material assumptions are incomplete, or because attenuation and reflections are not fully represented. Cisco describes its predictive and 2D map views as approximations (site survey guidelines; Catalyst Center floor-map guide).

A measured map is grounded in observations, but it is not automatically representative of every client or operating condition. Survey equipment, AP model, antenna, transmit power, chosen band and SSID, and conditions during the survey can all affect how well the results apply to the deployed network. Cisco warns that a mismatch between survey and planned APs or client cards can make results less representative (site survey guidelines).

Why do frequency bands matter?
Coverage on one band does not establish coverage on another. Cisco Meraki notes that 2.4 GHz generally travels farther and penetrates obstacles better than 5 GHz. A survey limited to 2.4 GHz can therefore miss weak areas that users encounter on 5 GHz. Map the bands and SSIDs that the intended users will actually use (Meraki channel-planning guidance).

How should you use a heat map?
- Start with the use case. Identify the applications and client devices the network must support, then select relevant metrics and thresholds.
- Plan new spaces with a prediction. Use a predictive map to inform initial AP placement, and label it as a model rather than a field measurement.
- Validate after installation. Survey important areas with passive or active measurements, representative clients, and operating conditions that resemble normal use.
- Check quality as well as signal. Review SNR, noise, interference, and coverage overlap where relevant, rather than relying on signal strength alone.
- Test each required band and SSID. A map for one band cannot establish coverage for another.
- Investigate weak areas before choosing a fix. Use measurements and network context to identify the cause; a low-signal patch is a prompt to investigate, not proof that every problem is caused by signal strength.
A useful report identifies its survey method, area, bands, metric layers, and thresholds. Cisco recommends coverage, SNR, and noise-floor maps with target thresholds and legends, along with information about interference, equipment placement, and rogue devices (site survey guidelines).
