What Is a WebRTC Server and When Do You Need One?

A WebRTC server can mean a signaling service, a TURN relay, or a media server. Learn which job each does and how to choose an architecture.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A “WebRTC server” is not one required component. It is a broad label for services that help WebRTC applications set up connections, traverse restrictive networks, or route and process media. A simple call can send media directly between two devices when connectivity allows; group calls, broadcasts, and server-side media features often call for an SFU or MCU.

What WebRTC means by a server

WebRTC is a set of browser APIs and real-time protocols, not a mandate that every call pass through one central media server. The W3C’s WebRTC Recommendation defines APIs for exchanging media and application data between browsers or compatible devices (W3C WebRTC Recommendation, 13 March 2025).

In practice, people use “WebRTC server” to mean several different things. Signaling coordinates session setup; ICE, STUN, and TURN help endpoints find a network path; and a media server such as an SFU or MCU receives and forwards or processes media. Those jobs are related, but they are not interchangeable.

Which server does what?

Signaling service: arranging the connection

Before two endpoints can exchange media, an application needs to exchange session descriptions and ICE candidates between them. This is signaling. WebRTC does not prescribe one signaling protocol: an application might use its own server and a persistent connection, for example. Signaling coordinates setup but does not necessarily carry audio or video. The WebRTC Project’s architecture overview leaves session-management choices to the application developer (WebRTC Project architecture overview).

ICE, STUN, and TURN: finding a network path

ICE gathers possible connection addresses, tests candidate pairs, and selects a usable path. STUN can help an endpoint discover the address it appears to have on the public internet. If a direct route is unavailable or blocked by network policy, TURN allocates a relay address and carries the traffic between endpoints.

TURN is a connectivity relay, not a conferencing media server: it does not add room membership, track selection, or mixing. The IETF’s ICE and WebRTC transport standards describe these distinct roles (RFC 8445; RFC 8835).

WebRTC browsers must support TURN, including TCP and TLS-over-TCP modes for networks that block UDP, under RFC 8835. That does not mean every call uses a relay. RFC 8445 notes that STUN or TURN may not be necessary on some networks, and that TURN can be costly. Plan for a working relay fallback, then measure how often your users need it and what that usage costs.

Media server: routing or processing audio and video

An SFU (Selective Forwarding Unit) receives media tracks from publishers and forwards selected tracks to subscribers without mixing the underlying media. Clients can subscribe to different streams or layers, making an SFU useful for group calls and real-time broadcasts where participants need independent tracks or flexible layouts. The mediasoup overview explains the SFU model and its contrast with an MCU.

An MCU (Multipoint Conferencing Unit) decodes and mixes audio or composites video into a combined output. That can simplify a fixed layout and reduce the number of streams an endpoint handles, but it requires more server-side processing and gives participants less track-level control. Neither design is universally better: the right choice depends on what clients need to send, receive, select, or display.

Do you need a server for WebRTC?

You need a signaling mechanism for endpoints to coordinate. You should also plan for TURN if users may connect through restrictive NATs or firewalls, even when a small call otherwise uses peer-to-peer media. A media server is a separate decision: use one when server-mediated routing, group distribution, mixing, processing, or operational control is part of the product’s requirements.

Participant count alone does not settle the question. Consider the media experience, each client’s upstream and downstream capacity, network conditions, latency, privacy needs, and the operational capacity available to run the system.

Situation Likely starting point Key trade-offs
Two endpoints and a simple call Peer-to-peer media with signaling and ICE; provision TURN as a fallback. Check connection success across user networks, relay usage and cost, privacy, and operational needs.
A constrained small group where each endpoint can upload to every other endpoint Mesh peer-to-peer may work. Each participant’s upstream and downstream load grows as peers are added. Test on target devices and networks. LiveKit describes P2P as working well for two to three peers; that is provider guidance, not a universal participant limit (LiveKit SFU and P2P overview).
Multi-party meeting with independent tracks, selective subscriptions, or adaptable layouts SFU. Validate forwarding capacity, topology, bandwidth, subscription policy, and scaling for the chosen server.
Server-side audio mixing or a composed video feed MCU or a media-processing service. Weigh processing costs, latency, layout constraints, and whether clients need independent tracks.
Broadcast to many viewers with low delay SFU distribution or a hybrid media architecture. Plan for ingress and egress bandwidth, fan-out, regional distribution, and limits of individual routers or nodes.
Enterprise or locked-down networks TURN-capable deployment; a TURN-only policy may be needed in some environments. Account for UDP blocking, TCP/TLS fallback, relay bandwidth, credentials, and regional placement.

These are starting patterns, not fixed thresholds. The available standards and implementation guides do not establish a universal benchmark that can size every deployment.

Trade-offs to account for

Peer-to-peer media

When ICE finds a direct path, P2P avoids routing media through a conferencing server. But direct connectivity is not guaranteed, so restrictive NAT or firewall conditions can make TURN relaying necessary. In a mesh group, every endpoint may need to send media to multiple peers; test the actual devices and networks you expect to support.

TURN relay

Relaying can make connections work when a direct route fails, but it consumes relay bandwidth and can add path length. RFC 8445 explicitly notes that TURN can be expensive. Measure relay use and place relay capacity where it can serve your users’ network conditions.

SFU forwarding

A publisher generally uploads a stream once to the SFU, which forwards tracks to interested subscribers. This can reduce publisher upload demands compared with sending separately to every peer, while giving the application track and subscription control. The trade-off is that subscribers may receive several streams and the SFU carries substantial network traffic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

MCU mixing

A mixed or composited output can reduce the stream count at endpoints and suit a fixed viewing layout. The media server must do more processing, and participants lose some independent control over tracks and layout.

Self-hosted or managed media infrastructure?

Self-hosting an SFU gives your team responsibility for deployment and operations. A managed option shifts some of that work to a provider. LiveKit documents both a self-hosted open-source server and LiveKit Cloud (LiveKit documentation). Compare the service features, operating effort, regions and data residency, expected traffic, security controls, pricing, and support using current vendor documentation; no price comparison is established here.

Scaling depends on the specific SFU and deployment. For example, mediasoup documents worker, router, and host distribution, and notes that larger broadcast scenarios may need multiple routers (mediasoup scalability). That guidance is specific to mediasoup, not a capacity claim for all SFUs. Benchmark your chosen implementation using representative codecs, resolutions, room sizes, and network conditions.

Security responsibilities do not stop at the server

The IETF WebRTC security architecture describes DTLS-SRTP keying for media, ICE reachability checks, and continuing consent mechanisms (RFC 8827). These protocol protections do not replace application-level authorization, secure signaling, short-lived relay credentials, abuse controls, or careful handling of logs and recordings. Adding a WebRTC server by itself is not a security guarantee.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is TURN the same thing as an SFU?

No. TURN relays network traffic when a direct route is unavailable; an SFU forwards selected media tracks to subscribers.

Can signaling carry the audio and video?

It can be designed to carry application messages, but signaling’s WebRTC role is exchanging setup information. Whether media is routed through a server is a separate architecture choice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does WebRTC require one signaling protocol?

No. WebRTC specifies no single signaling protocol; the application chooses how endpoints exchange session descriptions and ICE candidates.
