How to Connect an IP Camera to YouTube Live with RTMP

To connect an IP camera directly to YouTube Live, the camera must support outbound RTMP (or RTMPS) publishing. In YouTube Studio, copy the stream URL and stream key, enter them in the camera’s RTMP settings, enable the stream, then check the incoming preview in YouTube Live Control Room. If the camera only provides an RTSP feed or cannot publish to YouTube, use a compatible encoder between the camera and YouTube.

Check these requirements first

  • Your YouTube channel must be eligible to go live. YouTube’s current requirements include channel verification, no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and a minimum age of 16. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements for the latest details.
  • The camera must publish outbound RTMP. An IP camera may support RTSP viewing or RTMP server functions without being able to send an outbound RTMP stream to YouTube. Check the documentation and firmware notes for the exact model.
  • The camera needs internet access and compatible output. Confirm that its video and, if used, audio formats can be accepted by YouTube. Wired Ethernet or PoE may suit an installation, but they are not universal requirements.

Camera menus and supported formats vary by model and firmware. Amcrest and TP-Link provide model-specific RTMP instructions; TP-Link notes that its documented RTMP feature may require current firmware. Use those pages as examples, not as a menu guide for every camera: Amcrest’s YouTube RTMP setup and TP-Link VIGI’s RTMP instructions.

Connect a camera that supports outbound RTMP

  1. Create or select a stream in YouTube Studio. Open Go Live and create a new stream or choose a scheduled one. In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key. The key identifies the destination and authorizes the encoder or camera to send video; YouTube explains the stream key and encoder connection.
  2. Open the camera’s RTMP settings. Use its web interface or management app, then look under network, streaming, or RTMP settings. Labels and paths differ. For example, Amcrest documents Setup > Network > RTMP, with RTMP enabled and the URL and key entered in a custom address field. TP-Link VIGI documents separate server-address and stream-key fields. Follow the instructions for your camera’s exact model and firmware.
  3. Enter the YouTube destination and credentials. Put the stream URL in the server or address field and the stream key in the key field. If the camera offers a single custom address field, use the format its manufacturer specifies. Do not assume that fields or URL formatting are interchangeable across brands.
  4. Set and enable the camera stream. Select a video and audio configuration compatible with both the camera’s capabilities and YouTube’s ingest guidance below. Apply the settings and start or enable the RTMP stream.
  5. Check the YouTube preview before broadcasting. Return to Live Control Room and wait for the incoming preview. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s encoder workflow says to click Go live once the preview appears. Confirm audio and test representative camera movement before relying on the setup for an event. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Choose compatible video, audio, and ingest settings

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS ingestion; H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection. Use RTMPS only if the camera supports it.

There is no single bitrate that fits every camera output. YouTube’s bitrate table varies by resolution, frame rate, and codec, so match the row to the actual output you select rather than copying a generic figure. The camera must support the chosen settings as well as YouTube accepting them.

UNISHEEN 1080P60 HDMI Video Encoder, H.265/H.264 Live Streaming Encoder, HDMI to RTSP/RTMP/SRT/HLS/WebRTC IPTV Encoder for YouTube Facebook Live, Browser Setup, No PC Software Needed
  • 【Hardware H.265/H.264 Encoding at 1080P60】Dedicated hardware encoder delivers broadcast-quality 1080P60 streams with H.265/H.264 compression. Reduces bandwidth usage by up to 50% compared to legacy H.264-only solutions, while maintaining crisp, crystal-clear video output.
  • 【Broad Protocol Support for IP Distribution】 Supports SRT, RTMP(S), RTSP, UDP, HTTP, HLS, WebRTC, TRTC, Icecast and SHOUTcast — integrate seamlessly with CDNs, surveillance NVRs, IPTV systems and browser-based monitoring dashboards. One device replaces multiple single-purpose streaming boxes.
  • 【Browser-Based Setup in Minutes】 Set up in minutes through any browser — no software, drivers or OS compatibility issues. DHCP is enabled by default to prevent IP address conflicts on your network. Note: basic networking knowledge (IP address, RTSP/RTMP configuration) is recommended for advanced streaming setups.
  • 【Compact Design with Flexible Deployment】Palm-sized form factor (approx. 90×54×29mm) fits easily behind monitors, on shelves, or in equipment racks. Low power consumption ensures reliable 24/7 operation for live events, remote monitoring, and digital signage.
  • 【Professional Audio & OSD Overlay + 1-Year Warranty】 Supports HDMI embedded audio plus external 3.5mm input. Built-in OSD generator adds scrolling text, logos, or timestamps directly to the video stream — ideal for branding, event info, or security labeling. Backed by a 1-year warranty and 24/7 online technical support.

Manufacturer limits can be narrower than YouTube’s general ingest options. For example, TP-Link’s VIGI instructions advise H.264/H.264+ for the main stream and identify an audio compatibility limitation in its documented workflow. Check your own camera’s current documentation and test the incoming preview; do not infer support from the general IP-camera label.

If the camera cannot send directly to YouTube

A camera that exposes an RTSP feed but cannot publish outbound RTMP needs an intermediary encoder. The encoder reads the camera feed and sends a separate stream to YouTube using the stream URL and key. Hanwha Vision documents one such workflow using a camera’s RTSP feed and FFmpeg: Hanwha Vision’s RTSP-to-YouTube instructions.

This is not direct camera RTMP publishing: the encoder must be running, and the camera feed must be compatible with it. Follow the encoder and camera instructions for the specific models and software in your setup; the available guidance does not establish one universal command or configuration for every camera.

Protect the stream key

Treat the stream key like a password. Do not show it in public screenshots, recordings, or examples. If you believe it has been exposed, reset it in YouTube Live Control Room and replace the saved value in the camera or encoder before streaming again. YouTube’s stream-key help describes its role in connecting an encoder.

Troubleshoot a missing or unusable preview

  • YouTube receives no stream: Confirm the channel is eligible, the camera’s outbound RTMP feature is enabled, and the server URL and key are copied into the correct fields. Check that the camera can reach the internet and that the stream is actually running.
  • The camera has RTSP but no outbound RTMP option: RTSP viewing does not by itself mean the camera can publish to YouTube. Use an encoder that can read the camera feed and send it to YouTube.
  • The connection arrives but video is not accepted or displayed correctly: Compare the camera’s codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate mode, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s encoder guide. The camera’s supported formats may be more limited than YouTube’s general ingest choices.
  • Video works but audio does not: Check whether the camera provides audio, whether it is enabled in the selected stream, and whether its audio format is supported by both the camera workflow and YouTube. Manufacturer-specific limitations can apply.
  • The configuration stops matching the menu or feature: Recheck the exact model and firmware. Menu paths and RTMP support differ, and some features may require a firmware update.
  • The stream key may have leaked: Reset it in Live Control Room and update the camera or encoder with the replacement key.
