A VLAN (virtual local area network) divides traffic on shared networking equipment into separate logical groups. Putting smart-home devices on their own segment can limit their ability to communicate directly with your computers and phones, helping contain some threats. But a VLAN is not a firewall by itself: your router or firewall controls traffic between segments, and the equipment must be configured correctly. If your router offers an isolated guest Wi-Fi network, that may be a simpler starting point.
What a VLAN does
A VLAN is a way to group network traffic logically rather than requiring a separate set of physical networking equipment for each group. VLAN-aware switches and access points use identifiers—commonly IEEE 802.1Q tags—to keep traffic in the configured groups as it moves across network links. NETGEAR explains the tagging and port concepts in its VLAN setup guidance.

A device connected to an access port is typically assigned to one VLAN. A trunk link can carry traffic for multiple VLANs between networking components. Ordinary devices such as a television or smart plug usually do not need to understand VLAN tags; the switch or access point handles the assignment.
Wi-Fi can be divided in a similar way: an access point can map an SSID—the Wi-Fi name you choose—to a VLAN. The access point, its upstream switch or gateway, and the network’s DHCP service must agree on the configuration. WatchGuard’s access point and VLAN guidance describes these dependencies.

- Everyday Multi-Room WiFi Coverage: Five external antennas and Beamforming help support stable WiFi in common home areas such as living rooms, bedrooms, home offices, apartments, and rental homes. Actual coverage may vary depending on walls, distance, home layout, and wireless interference.
- WPA3 Security with Useful Home Controls: WPA3 security helps protect your wireless network. Parental controls, guest network, and QoS let you manage connected devices, create a separate WiFi network for visitors, and help prioritize important devices during everyday internet use.
- 20+ Devices, 1 WAN + 3 LAN Gigabit Ports & EasyMesh Support: OFDMA + MU-MIMO keeps 20+ devices running smoothly — phones, laptops, tablets, smart TVs, cameras, and more. The back panel has 1 Gigabit WAN + 3 Gigabit LAN ports for stable high-speed wired connections to PCs and smart TVs. For wider coverage, EasyMesh lets you add compatible routers to build a seamless whole-home mesh — you'll need at least 2 units (this router plus one or more). If a room has weak signal or is blocked by walls, simply place an extra compatible router there and press the Mesh button on the router to extend your network quickly.
How segmentation can help protect a smart home
Suppose your computers and phones are on one network and cameras, plugs, televisions, and other connected devices are on another. If one smart device is compromised, separation can make it harder for that device to communicate directly with personal computers or other devices. NIST’s SP 1800-15 documentation recommends placing IoT devices with known security risks on a separate network segment. CISA also explains that segmentation can prevent devices from communicating with one another and help limit the spread of viruses in its home wireless security guidance.
The protection comes from limiting network paths, not from encrypting traffic or making a device invulnerable. A VLAN alone does not decide which traffic can cross between groups. When devices on different VLANs need to communicate, that traffic is routed through a gateway; the router or firewall’s rules determine what is allowed. A permissive rule can undermine the separation, while an overly restrictive one can break legitimate features.

A practical household layout
For equipment that supports the needed controls, a three-group layout is a useful starting point:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Trusted devices: personal computers and phones.
- Smart-home devices: cameras, plugs, televisions, speakers, thermostats, and similar products.
- Visitors: guest Wi-Fi or another isolated segment.
Set the router or firewall to restrict traffic between groups by default, then allow only the access needed for normal use. Some smart-home control or device-discovery features may rely on local network communication. If a feature stops working after segmentation, identify the specific device and function, then adjust access deliberately rather than opening broad access between the networks. There is no universal set of rules for every smart-home product.

VLAN or guest Wi-Fi: which should you use?
| Option | When it fits | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Guest Wi-Fi | A household that wants basic separation with minimal setup. | Confirm that your router’s guest network blocks the access you want blocked. A separate Wi-Fi name alone does not prove that guest devices are isolated from one another or from your home network. |
| VLANs | A household that needs more deliberate grouping across wired and wireless devices. | Confirm that the gateway, switches, and access points support the required VLAN functions and that their configurations match. |
CISA identifies guest Wi-Fi on many routers as a simple way to create separate network segments. The exact isolation behavior depends on the router’s implementation and settings. NETGEAR notes that most home routers do not support VLANs, so check your exact model rather than assuming support based on brand. For wireless VLANs, WatchGuard’s setup guidance shows why the SSID, access point, switch connection, and DHCP configuration need to line up.

What to check before setting up VLANs
- Check the gateway. Look up your exact router or gateway model and firmware documentation. Verify that it can create VLANs and control traffic between them. Support is model-specific: ASUS’s VLAN setup guidance lists particular supported router models, not every ASUS router.
- Check wired equipment. If VLAN traffic will travel over Ethernet between devices, confirm that the switch supports managed 802.1Q VLANs. Assign device-facing access ports to the intended VLAN and configure trunk links to carry only the VLANs needed.
- Check wireless equipment. For multiple Wi-Fi segments, confirm that the access point can map each SSID to a VLAN. Its uplink and the connected switch or gateway must carry those VLANs correctly.
- Provide address assignment. Each segment needs DHCP service or a configured DHCP relay so devices can receive network addresses.
- Set traffic rules deliberately. Start with restrictive inter-segment access and allow only what device operation requires. Exact rules depend on your router and devices.
- Protect administration and devices. Keep router administration reachable from a trusted network, install available router and IoT firmware updates, and use strong, unique credentials. NIST’s IR 8425A consumer-router cybersecurity profile describes security considerations for routers that support networks with smart-home IoT devices.
What VLANs cannot guarantee
- They do not guarantee that a compromised device cannot reach another network; routing and firewall rules determine which paths remain open.
- They do not replace firmware updates, strong credentials, or other device and router security measures.
- They do not automatically preserve every smart-home feature. Some discovery and control functions may need local communication that your rules block.
- They are not available through every home router, and correct setup may involve several devices rather than one setting.
