Only an eye-care professional can decide whether a particular person’s eyes and prescription suit a specific lens. Ortho-K provides temporary vision correction; its effect wears off when treatment stops.
What Ortho-K does—and what candidacy means
Ortho-K uses specially designed rigid gas-permeable contact lenses, commonly worn overnight, to temporarily change the cornea’s shape and reduce myopia. The lenses require a prescription and professional fitting. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) explains that the vision-correction effect is temporary and that some people’s correction may wear off during the day. Continued wear on the prescribed schedule is needed to maintain the effect. FDA: Types of Contact Lenses

Being interested in daytime vision without glasses or daytime contacts may make an evaluation reasonable, but it does not establish suitability. The clinician must assess eye health, corneal shape, prescription, and the design and labeling of the specific lens. A limit approved for one product is not a universal Ortho-K limit.

Who may be a reasonable candidate?
- Someone seeking temporary correction of myopia: They understand that results vary, the effect requires maintenance wear, and glasses or another correction may still be needed if vision changes during the day.
- Someone with healthy eyes for contact lens wear: Examination finds no relevant disease, injury, inflammation, or other contraindication affecting the cornea, conjunctiva, or eyelids.
- Someone whose prescription suits the particular lens: The clinician checks the exact product’s indication and fitting requirements rather than applying a generic prescription cutoff.
- Someone able to manage lens care reliably: The patient—or a child’s caregiver—can consistently follow instructions for insertion, removal, cleaning, disinfection, storage, and follow-up appointments.
Can children and teenagers wear Ortho-K?
Children and teenagers may be considered, including when myopia management is a goal, but there is no single age rule that establishes suitability for every lens. The decision should account for eye health and prescription as well as the child’s maturity, ability to handle lenses hygienically, caregiver support, and likelihood of attending follow-up visits.

A 2018 American Academy of Ophthalmology evidence assessment concluded that Ortho-K may slow myopia progression in children and adolescents, with a potentially greater effect when treatment begins younger. In the studies included in the assessment, Ortho-K groups typically had about 50% less axial elongation over two years: average axial-length changes were approximately 0.3 mm in treated groups versus 0.6 mm in controls, corresponding to an approximate 0.5-diopter refractive difference. These are study findings, not a forecast for an individual child. Studies varied, most were conducted in Asian populations, and the assessment emphasized infection risk. American Academy of Ophthalmology evidence assessment
Myopia progression slowing and temporary refractive correction are distinct goals. FDA labeling for the reviewed lens describes temporary reduction of myopia; the evidence assessment on children’s progression does not make progression control an FDA-approved claim for that device. Discuss the intended goal with the clinician.

Who should avoid Ortho-K or have extra assessment?
FDA labeling for the reviewed devices lists acute or subacute inflammation or infection and eye disease, injury, or abnormality affecting the cornea, conjunctiva, or eyelids among reasons not to use them. Older FDA guidance also identifies examples such as severe dry eye, reduced corneal sensitivity, some systemic diseases, active corneal infection, relevant ocular allergy, and allergy to ingredients in lens-care solutions. These examples are not a universal checklist: contraindications vary by device, and the current labeling for the exact lens matters. FDA device labeling FDA guidance on daily-wear contact lenses
Overnight wear makes infection prevention central to candidacy. FDA warns of an increased risk of serious infection with lenses worn during sleep, and the AAO assessment notes the possibility of microbial keratitis that can threaten vision. A person who cannot reliably follow the prescribed wear schedule, disinfection regimen, and monitoring plan may not be a suitable candidate.

- Durable hard plastic with easy to open and close twist caps
- Specially designed to prevent leakage and keeps lenses from drying out
- Great value
If pain, redness, irritation, or a sudden change in vision occurs, follow the lens instructions about removal and seek prompt professional advice. Use only the care and disinfection system prescribed for the specific lens; do not substitute tap water or generic products. The FDA’s 2026 approval for the Dilight lens specifies chemical disinfection. FDA Dilight approval and labeling
Prescription limits are lens-specific
As one example, the FDA’s 2026 Dilight approval specifies temporary reduction of myopia up to 4.00 diopters, with astigmatism up to 1.50 diopters. Those figures apply to that approved lens and its labeled indication; they are not general eligibility limits for all Ortho-K designs. The clinician must determine whether the person’s refractive error and corneal measurements fit the lens being considered. FDA Dilight approval and labeling

How to compare Ortho-K with other options
For a child or adult with more than one suitable approach, ask the clinician to compare options against the person’s needs rather than treating Ortho-K as the default. Useful factors include:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- How well each option fits the refractive error and visual needs.
- Whether the goal is vision correction alone, myopia management, or both—and what evidence supports that goal.
- Safety considerations, including the infection risk associated with overnight lens wear.
- Daily care demands, ability to comply, and frequency of professional follow-up.
- Expected vision quality in different lighting and activities.
- Total cost and the patient’s preferences.
For school-age children, possible alternatives may include daytime optical options or other myopia-control approaches. The AAO advises considering alternatives when overnight lens wear is contemplated. AAO myopia guidance

Questions to take to an Ortho-K evaluation
- Does my eye health and corneal shape support fitting this specific lens?
- What is the exact lens indication for my prescription, and what results are realistic for my vision needs?
- What wearing schedule, care products, disinfection steps, and follow-up visits will I need?
- What symptoms mean I should remove the lens or contact the clinic urgently?
- If this is for a child, what is the treatment goal, what alternatives are appropriate, and how will progress and safety be monitored?
An online checklist cannot determine personal eligibility: examination and a lens-specific professional fitting are essential.
