A virus signature file is a set of threat-identification data that antivirus software uses to help recognize known malware. The file supplies information to the antivirus program; it is not the program itself, and it cannot guarantee detection of every threat.
What is a virus signature file?
Antivirus products use threat data to identify malware they already know about. A virus signature file stores that data for the product to consult during its checks. Depending on the vendor, the product may call it a signature file, definitions, or another term.

Microsoft uses the terms “security intelligence” and “definitions” in Windows guidance. Microsoft Support describes security intelligence as “files that contain information about the latest threats that could infect your device” in its Virus and Threat Protection in the Windows Security App documentation.

What does a virus signature file do?
The antivirus software checks files or other content against threat information it has available. When scanned content matches information associated with a known threat, the product can identify it and take action according to its settings. The signature data does not scan, clean, or remove anything by itself; the antivirus software performs those tasks.

Is a signature file the same as antivirus software?
No. A signature file is one input to the antivirus product. The product also includes an engine—the software that processes content and applies detection logic—and may use other detection methods. Updating signatures does not replace updating or maintaining the antivirus application itself.
Can signature files detect every virus?
No. Signature data helps identify threats represented in that data, but a signature-only approach cannot promise protection against every threat, including threats the product does not yet recognize. Microsoft describes Defender as using additional approaches, including cloud-delivered intelligence, anomaly detection, machine learning, and behavior monitoring, alongside its threat data. These methods look beyond a simple match to known threat information, though their exact operation varies by product.

Because vendors use different terminology and detection systems, Microsoft’s description of Defender should not be treated as a specification for every antivirus product.

Does antivirus software still use signatures?
Yes, signatures or equivalent threat data remain one part of how antivirus products can recognize known malware. They are best understood as one layer of detection, rather than the entire protection system. Keep the product and its updates active, and avoid downloading signature files from unofficial sites.
