A virtual personal assistant (VPA) is software that interacts with a person to answer questions or help complete tasks. It may use voice, text, or a combination of both. The term can also refer to a human assistant who works remotely, so context matters.
What does “virtual personal assistant” mean?
In its software sense, a virtual personal assistant is a connected program or device designed to understand a person’s questions or instructions and help with planning or finding answers. The Cambridge English Dictionary uses “virtual personal assistant” as another expression for “virtual assistant” and gives Google Assistant, Siri, Cortana and Alexa as examples.

The same phrase has a second meaning: a person who works online from home or an office to assist one or more companies. If someone is discussing apps, devices or voice commands, they usually mean software; in a hiring or business-services context, they may mean a remote human worker.

A VPA is a way for a person to request help, while an app, service or device processes the request and provides a response or performs an action. It does not have to be a standalone gadget. For example, the Cambridge definition associates Amazon’s Echo smart speaker with Alexa, while Oracle describes bots that handle tasks through messages and simple interface controls. Oracle’s description is specific to its intelligent-bot products, but it illustrates that an assistant-style interface can exist within software rather than as a separate device.

What can a virtual personal assistant do?
Its capabilities depend on the product, available integrations, permissions and the user’s device or account. Examples include:
- Answer spoken questions or follow spoken instructions, such as helping with plans or finding information.
- Look up information, play music, calculate a tip, or help book or purchase something. These are examples in Samsung’s Bixby developer overview, not features guaranteed across assistants.
- Complete tasks through text messages and simple interface controls, as described in Oracle’s overview of intelligent bots.
There is no common feature list that every VPA must support. A booking action, for instance, may depend on a service integration, region, account or permission being available.

Does a virtual personal assistant have to use voice?
No. Voice is a familiar way to interact with assistants, and the Cambridge definition focuses on spoken questions and instructions. But assistant-style help can also be delivered through text and on-screen controls. The interaction method depends on the product: a voice assistant, a messaging bot and a text-based assistant interface can all help a user request information or actions.

Google Assistant, Siri, Cortana and Alexa are examples named by the Cambridge English Dictionary. Samsung also calls Bixby a virtual personal assistant. Its developer overview describes possible actions in Bixby’s ecosystem, including booking a reservation, ride or hotel; checking flight information, weather or recipes; purchasing tickets or flowers; and playing music. Those examples describe Bixby and its extensions, not a universal capability set for VPAs.
