What Is a Virtual Network? How It Works and What It’s Used For

A virtual network creates logically isolated connectivity over shared infrastructure. Learn its main components, common uses, and how cloud networks differ from VLANs and VPNs.

A virtual network is a logically isolated network created in software over shared physical infrastructure. It lets systems communicate as if they were on a distinct network without requiring their own separate physical cabling. In cloud services, names such as Azure Virtual Network (VNet), Google Cloud VPC, and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure VCN refer to provider-specific implementations of this broader idea.

What is a virtual network?

The IETF’s data-center networking framework defines a virtual network as “a logical abstraction of a physical network” that provides Layer 2 or Layer 3 network services to tenant systems. In simpler terms, network virtualization divides shared networking infrastructure into separate logical environments. Those environments can carry traffic for different applications, teams, or customers while maintaining logical separation.

This is an abstraction, not a promise of dedicated physical equipment. A virtual network may use shared switches, links, or cloud infrastructure underneath it. Its isolation is logical, and the exact enforcement mechanisms depend on the design and platform; being inside a virtual network does not by itself guarantee complete security. IETF RFC 7365 and NVIDIA’s data-center networking guide describe the general virtualization concepts.

How the main components fit together

Virtual networks use addressing, segmentation, routing, and traffic controls to define where workloads belong and how they can communicate. Not every implementation includes every component below: gateways, for example, are needed only when a connection to another network is required.

TP-Link AC1200 Gigabit Dual Band WiFi Router (Archer A6) | MU-MIMO Wireless Internet Router, 4 x Antennas, OneMesh and AP Mode, Long Range Coverage
  • Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
  • Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
  • Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
  • MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  • Address space: An IP range assigned to a network. Planning it early matters if networks may later be connected. In the Azure scenarios documented by Microsoft, connected VNets and on-premises networks need non-overlapping CIDR blocks.
  • Subnets: Smaller portions of the address space used to group resources, such as application tiers or other workloads. Subnet behavior and requirements vary by platform.
  • Network interfaces and workloads: Virtual interfaces attach compute resources to a network. The implementation details depend on the provider or virtualization platform.
  • Routes and routing tables: Routes determine where packets go, including whether traffic stays within a network or travels toward a connected network. Network contexts may have separate routing tables.
  • Security controls: Security groups, firewall rules, and related policies define which traffic is permitted. A network boundary alone should not be treated as a complete security policy.
  • Gateways and connections: VPN gateways, peering, or provider interconnect services can link a virtual network to another network. These are optional and provider-specific.
  • Overlay and underlay in data centers: An overlay is the virtual network carried across a transport network; the underlay supplies connectivity between the nodes carrying overlay traffic.

Microsoft’s Azure Virtual Network concepts and best practices explains address spaces, subnets, routes, and security groups in its Azure context. Oracle’s Networking Overview describes VCN components including subnets, firewall rules, and gateways.

What virtual networks are used for

  • Separate environments on shared infrastructure: Logical boundaries can keep tenant, team, application, or development and production traffic distinct.
  • Connect cloud workloads privately: Resources within a provider’s virtual network can communicate according to that service’s network configuration.
  • Control traffic paths: Subnets, routes, and security policies help organize workloads and govern which destinations can be reached.
  • Link cloud and on-premises networks: VPN tunnels and dedicated interconnect options can provide hybrid connectivity, subject to the provider’s configuration and requirements.

Virtual network, VLAN, overlay, VPC, and VPN: what’s different?

Term Meaning How it relates
Virtual network A general logical or software-defined network abstraction over physical infrastructure. The broad concept; implementations vary.
VLAN A Layer 2 Ethernet segmentation concept. A VLAN is not a synonym for a cloud VNet or VPC.
Overlay network A virtual network carried over an underlay transport network. Common in data-center network virtualization; the underlay carries overlay traffic.
Cloud VNet, VPC, or VCN A provider-defined private networking service. Azure, Google Cloud, and Oracle Cloud use different names and service behaviors.
VPN A tunneled connection between networks or users. A VPN may connect a virtual network to another network; it is not itself the same thing as a virtual network.

How cloud providers use the term

Cloud providers use different names and implement their services according to their own networking models. Treat these as examples of the broader concept, not interchangeable products with guaranteed feature parity.
