There is no objective “best” jQuery table plugin for every project. This 2026 shortlist is a set of candidates, not a benchmark ranking—and several options work with jQuery without depending on it. For an existing HTML table that needs search, sorting, and paging, start with DataTables. For other projects, choose according to editing needs, data handling, mobile layout, and maintenance.
How to choose a table library
First decide whether you want to enhance an existing semantic HTML table or build a data grid from JavaScript or JSON. Then match the tool to the work the table must do: sorting alone is a smaller requirement than column filters, Ajax loading, editing, validation, or CRUD operations.

- Data volume: Client-side features operate on data delivered to the browser. For very large datasets, consider server-side querying and paging rather than relying on an asserted row-count limit or an unverified speed claim.
- Mobile layout: A wide table can scroll horizontally, or it can hide selected columns and reveal their values when a row expands. These are different tradeoffs, not equivalent forms of shrinking.
- Integration: Check whether a candidate requires jQuery, merely offers a jQuery wrapper, or works alongside a jQuery project without depending on it. Also verify compatibility with your Bootstrap, browser, and framework versions.
- Long-term cost and upkeep: Confirm the current license, whether needed features are extensions, recent releases, open issues, supported versions, and a migration path before adopting a library.
There is no controlled, common test in the comparison that establishes which candidate is fastest or handles a particular number of rows best. Treat performance claims across different libraries as non-comparable unless they use the same data, hardware, browser, and configuration.

1. DataTables
DataTables is the strongest starting point when a project already has an HTML table and needs a broad enhancement layer. Its core documentation covers data sourcing, search, the API, styling, Ajax, and server-side processing. The project describes its goal as “To enhance the accessibility of data in HTML tables.”
#1 Best Overall
Despite its name as a jQuery plugin, DataTables 3 no longer has an external dependency and continues to operate with jQuery. For very large datasets, its documented server-side processing model delegates ordering, searching, and paging to the database rather than asking the browser to process the full result set. Extensions can add capabilities such as editing, advanced filtering, controls, and export; check the current terms for any extension you need.

2. Tabulator
Tabulator is an interactive table library with substantial functionality, and it can be used independently of jQuery. Its 6.x documentation also provides a jQuery wrapper. That wrapper requires both jQuery and jQuery UI, loaded before Tabulator and the wrapper. The documentation reported version 6.5.0 when reviewed; check the current documentation for the release you plan to deploy.
Choose it when you want a grid-style library rather than only a light enhancer for existing markup. Do not assume that using its wrapper makes the core library dependent on jQuery.

3. SlickGrid
SlickGrid is a candidate for dense, grid-oriented interfaces. It does not require jQuery from version 4 onward, so it may fit a jQuery application without being a jQuery-dependent plugin. Check the current project documentation and release history for compatibility, maintenance, and implementation details before selecting it.
Editing and CRUD-oriented tables
4. Handsontable
Handsontable is the spreadsheet-like candidate in this list, suited to workflows where users need to work directly with cell data. It does not require jQuery. Verify the current license and terms with the vendor, especially if editing capabilities are central to a commercial product.
5. jsGrid
jsGrid is positioned for CRUD workflows: inserting, editing, and deleting rows, alongside sorting, filtering, and paging. That feature mix may suit a data-entry screen better than a table that only displays records. Confirm the current package’s compatibility and maintenance status before deployment.

Responsive presentation and Bootstrap fit
6. FooTable
FooTable’s described mobile approach hides selected columns at breakpoints and lets users expand a row to see those values. That can preserve access to secondary fields on narrow screens, but it changes how users inspect a record. Check current maintenance and browser support before choosing it for a new production project.

Bootstrap Table is worth considering when consistency with an existing Bootstrap interface matters. The comparison describes pagination, search, and Ajax loading. Verify the exact version’s behavior against the Bootstrap version in your application rather than assuming all combinations are compatible.
Sorting-focused and specialist candidates
8. jQuery Tablesorter
For a table that mainly needs sorting, jQuery Tablesorter is a focused option. The comparison describes a 2.0 fork with filtering, paging, and widgets; identify the exact package and fork before implementation, since the name alone does not establish which features or maintenance status apply.

9. Dynatable
Dynatable is described as using JSON and HTML5 data attributes for filtering, sorting, and searching. Its maintenance status should be checked directly against release history before it is considered for a new project; the claim that it has been unmaintained since 2014 has not been independently verified here.
10. Herotable
Herotable is included as a candidate for an all-in-one feature set, described as covering sorting, search, resizing, column visibility, and footer calculation. Those capabilities and its maintenance status were not independently confirmed against primary documentation, so validate the package and its current support before relying on it.

Shortlist by project need
| Project need | Candidate to investigate | Key qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Enhance an existing HTML table with search, sorting, and paging | DataTables | DataTables 3 has no external dependency but still works with jQuery. |
| Use an interactive grid with an optional jQuery wrapper | Tabulator | The 6.x wrapper requires jQuery and jQuery UI; the core does not depend on jQuery. |
| Spreadsheet-like cell editing | Handsontable | Does not require jQuery; verify current license terms. |
| CRUD-style row workflows | jsGrid | Confirm current compatibility and maintenance. |
| Show a wide table on mobile by revealing hidden columns per row | FooTable | Check maintenance and supported browsers. |
| Prioritize a Bootstrap-aligned interface | Bootstrap Table | Verify compatibility with the project’s Bootstrap version. |
| Basic sorting or a specialized feature set | jQuery Tablesorter, Dynatable, or Herotable | Confirm the specific package, features, and current maintenance before adoption. |
What “jQuery plugin” means for this list
The label is useful shorthand for tools a jQuery project might use, but it does not describe every candidate’s dependency model. Tabulator’s core, Handsontable, and SlickGrid v4+ can run without jQuery; Tabulator separately documents a jQuery wrapper. DataTables 3 also dropped its external dependency while retaining jQuery operation. Treat dependency, wrapper availability, and compatibility with your application as separate questions.
Best Value
The ten candidates and qualitative fit descriptions were assembled in a secondary comparison published May 11, 2026. Primary documentation was reviewed for DataTables and Tabulator; other candidates’ current release, license, and compatibility details should be confirmed with their own project documentation before adoption. The list is an editorial grouping by use case, not a measured ranking.
