The familiar play, pause, seek, and volume controls sit on top of a less visible process: retrieving media, separating its tracks, decoding them, buffering data, and displaying each frame at the right time.
What a video player does
Playback is the whole process of turning stored or delivered media into pictures and sound. A player may read a file on your device, fetch a remote file, or receive media through a streaming system such as HLS. It then interprets the media structure, decodes the tracks, and schedules the output so video and audio form one program. Apple describes video assets as potentially local, remote, or delivered using HLS (Apple Developer: Video).

The player also responds to your controls. Pause stops presentation while the player may retain buffered data; volume changes audio output; and seeking asks playback to resume at a different time. The exact interface and supported formats vary across apps, operating systems, browsers, and playback devices.
How a video player turns media into playback
- Get the media. The player reads data from a local file or retrieves it from a network source. For streaming, it may first request a playlist or manifest that describes the available media.
- Parse the container. The player reads the file structure and metadata and separates the encoded audio and video tracks. This separation is called demuxing. A container such as MP4, WebM, or MKV is not itself a codec.
- Decode the tracks. A decoder reconstructs audio samples and video frames from compressed data. The audio and video tracks may use different codecs even when they are carried in the same file.
- Buffer and synchronize. The player holds some media data ready for playback and uses timestamps to coordinate frames and audio. A video is a sequence of timestamped images presented rapidly; synchronization helps make that sequence and its sound feel continuous.
- Present the result. The device displays the decoded frames and sends audio to its speakers or headphones. Depending on the codec and device, some decoding work may be handled by dedicated hardware rather than only by general-purpose software.

Container, codec, and streaming protocol are different things

A useful shorthand is that the container holds tracks and labels, the codecs pack and unpack the tracks, and a streaming format describes how pieces are delivered. HLS and DASH are not codecs. MPEG describes DASH as a suite of standards for streaming multimedia over existing HTTP infrastructure (MPEG-DASH overview).
That distinction helps explain why a filename extension alone cannot guarantee playback. Two files with the same container extension can use different codecs, and a particular device or app may not support every combination.

What changes when video is streamed
With ordinary file playback, the player reads media data from a file or remote resource. In segmented streaming, it reads a playlist or manifest describing media pieces and, potentially, multiple versions of the same program. It requests segments, buffers them, decodes the tracks, and presents them as they arrive.
HLS can provide renditions at different resolutions and bitrates. Apple’s archived HLS guide describes a player using playlist information—including bandwidth, resolution, and codec—to choose a suitable variant for the device and measured network conditions. It may switch variants during playback if conditions warrant; this can help adapt delivery, but it does not guarantee uninterrupted playback. Actual results depend on network conditions, the available renditions, and the player implementation (Apple: About HTTP Live Streaming).

MPEG-DASH also supports on-demand and live delivery over HTTP infrastructure. HLS and DASH are delivery approaches, not guarantees that every device can play every stream. Compatibility depends on the player, device, packaging, codecs, and any content-protection requirements. Google’s receiver documentation describes protocol examples for Cast receivers, whose precise capabilities vary by implementation (Google Cast: streaming protocols).
In browsers, support for stream types differs. JavaScript can use Media Source Extensions (MSE) to supply media data to a browser’s video element, but the specific formats and implementation behavior vary. The web.dev guide explains the general approach; its browser-support discussion was last updated July 5, 2021, so it should not be read as a guarantee about every browser today (web.dev: Media streaming basics).

Why seeking may not jump to an exact frame immediately
Many compressed video frames are encoded with reference to other frames rather than as complete independent pictures. A key frame provides a point from which decoding can begin more independently. When you seek, a player may locate a preceding key frame, decode forward, and then resume at the requested time. The delay depends on the media, the player, and the device.

Why video is compressed
Raw video data grows quickly. MDN’s technical illustrations estimate about 25 MB for one uncompressed 4K frame and more than 3 TB for one hour of uncompressed 4K video at 30 frames per second. These are uncompressed-data examples, not typical file sizes for downloaded or streamed 4K video. MDN describes codec compression as commonly reducing video data by one to two orders of magnitude—a general estimate, not a promise for a particular encoding (MDN: Video processing concepts; page last modified May 15, 2026).

When a video will not play
- The file opens but shows an error or a blank picture: the container may be readable while a track’s codec is unsupported by that app or device. Try a player or device that supports the track format, or create a compatible version using a suitable conversion workflow.
- Video plays without sound, or sound without video: the audio and video tracks can use different codecs. Check that the player supports both tracks and that the desired audio track is selected.
- Playback stops or repeatedly buffers on a stream: delivery may not be keeping up with playback, or the selected rendition may be unsuitable for current conditions. Network quality, available variants, and player behavior all matter; adaptive streaming can switch among available versions but cannot ensure a buffer-free experience.
- Seeking takes time: the player may need to start from a preceding key frame and decode forward, particularly with media whose frames depend on earlier frames.
- A stream works in one app or device but not another: compatibility is platform-specific. Check the container, codecs, streaming format, and any protection requirements rather than relying only on the file extension.
