A video encoder compresses your video into a stream a platform can receive. If you stream from a computer, software such as OBS can encode it using your CPU or a supported GPU’s hardware encoder. You usually do not need to buy a separate encoder box.
What a video encoder does
A camera, game, screen, or other video source produces data that is too large to send as-is. An encoder compresses that video into a format the streaming service can ingest, using settings such as codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. Streaming software can also combine video and audio sources and scenes before encoding and sending the result.

Three terms are easy to confuse:
- Encoder: the software or hardware doing the compression.
- Codec: the method or format used to encode video, such as H.264.
- Hardware encoder: either an encoding component built into supported computer hardware, such as a GPU, or—depending on context—a dedicated device in the signal chain.
In a computer-based setup, OBS can handle the software workflow: choose a service, enter a stream key, and configure output settings. Its overview guide explains these controls: OBS Studio Overview Guide.
Do you need to buy a separate encoder?
Usually not if you are streaming from a computer. Start by checking the encoding options already available in your streaming software and on your computer. OBS includes the x264 software encoder and can use hardware encoders in supported GPUs; neither requires a dedicated streaming appliance. OBS’s guide to hardware encoding explains the distinction.

- Compact but Powerful Design: ZowieBox is smaller than a phone, featuring a tally light and LCD screen for streaming status. Capture console gameplay in up to 4K with zero-lag HDMI passthrough, while the built-in video encoder converts video for IP streaming. The IP stream can also be decoded back to a 4K HDMI signal.
- Standalone Game Streaming: Just plug and play—ZowieBox enables PC-free live gaming without affecting gameplay. As an RTMP hardware encoder and HDMI streamer, it delivers stable streaming directly from your source, making it ideal for gaming, live events, and professional broadcasting.
- NDI|HX3 Converter Technology: ZowieBox converts HDMI signals to NDI|HX3/HX2/HX, functioning as an NDI video encoder, or NDI Video Decoder for flexible IP workflows. Certified NDI technology enables low-latency gameplay streaming through OBS/vMix. Note: Encoder and decoder modes cannot run simultaneously; full NDI signals are not supported.
- UVC to HDMI Conversion: Supporting up to 4K@30fps and 1080p@60fps decoding, ZowieBox enables flexible conversion for webcam and video workflows. As a video decoder and HDMI to IP converter, it expands connectivity options for professional video devices. Note: USB capture card functionality is not currently supported.
- All-around Configuration Options: Control ZowieBox through its web UI on a PC, phone, or tablet. Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.
A separate encoder or capture device may suit a specific production setup—for example, one built around external video sources or a standalone workflow. But a dedicated box is not a general requirement for streaming, and buying one will not automatically fix an overloaded computer or an unreliable internet connection. First identify the constraint you need to solve, such as source compatibility, portability, or the way your production is arranged.
Software encoding versus hardware encoding
| Option | How it works | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Software encoding | Encoding runs on the computer’s CPU. OBS includes x264. | It uses CPU resources. The result also depends on settings and the overall workload, including scenes and sources. |
| GPU hardware encoding | A supported GPU’s specialized encoding component handles the encoding work. | It can take encoding work off the CPU, but image quality depends on the encoder generation and settings. OBS notes that earlier-generation hardware encoders may produce lower quality at the same bitrate than x264’s default veryfast preset. |
| Dedicated encoder device | A separate appliance handles part of the video-production or encoding chain. | Consider it for a specific source or production constraint—not as a default purchase. The documentation cited here does not establish a universal need for one. |
The choice is not simply “CPU versus GPU.” Software, operating system, hardware generation, codec support, resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, and the destination platform all matter. OBS notes that compatible system requirements alone do not guarantee a particular computer can handle a stream. Its system requirements guidance also points to the Auto Configuration Wizard as a way to find starting settings for your system.

Choose settings for the streaming platform
There is no single best setting for every platform or computer. For YouTube live ingest, the current live encoder settings guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, and recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Rate control: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum of four seconds.
- Bitrate: YouTube’s recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. For 1080p at 60 fps, its guidance lists 17 Mbps for H.264 and 12 Mbps for AV1 or H.265.
- Resolution and frame rate: choose a combination your system can encode and your upload connection can sustain. YouTube advises testing upload speed and selecting a quality that supports a reliable stream.
Those bitrate figures are YouTube recommendations, not universal values for other services. The platform also transcodes the incoming stream into multiple output formats for viewers, so your encoder’s job is to deliver a compatible, stable input—not to create every viewer playback version.

For local recordings, priorities can differ. OBS describes H.264 as broadly compatible and its default codec, while HEVC and AV1 support varies; AV1 may require a high-end CPU for real-time software encoding. Check the platform’s accepted live formats and your hardware support rather than assuming the best recording format is also the right live-stream format. See the OBS audio and video formats guide.
Set up and test before going live
- Choose the destination and enter its stream key. In OBS, select the streaming service or server and provide the key from your platform’s live-stream setup. Treat the key like a password; do not share it publicly.
- Configure output and video. Choose an available encoder, then set a platform-compatible codec, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, rate control, and keyframe interval. OBS’s overview guide covers service setup and output and video settings.
- Check your upload connection. Run an upload speed test and leave capacity for normal connection variation and other network activity; do not assume a result from a speed test guarantees a stable live stream.
- Run a representative test. Test with the kind of audio, motion, scenes, and sources you plan to use. Check that the platform receives the stream and monitor its stream-health indicators.
- Adjust based on what fails. If the system cannot keep up, lower resolution or frame rate, simplify demanding scenes or filters, and test again before buying more hardware.
When the stream struggles
Choppy output, overload warnings, or poor performance can come from the total workload rather than a missing encoder appliance. OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide identifies GPU overload and system bottlenecks as possible causes.

| Symptom | What to try |
|---|---|
| Encoding or rendering overload | Reduce output resolution or frame rate, then test again. OBS suggests trying 30 fps if 60 fps is not working. |
| Performance worsens with complex scenes | Simplify the scene, reduce demanding filters or browser sources, and consider whether a game or other workload is using too much GPU capacity. |
| Stream health is poor despite manageable system load | Check the upload connection, confirm the service’s recommended settings, and run another test with representative audio and motion. |
| Codec or settings are rejected | Check the destination’s current ingest requirements and choose a supported codec and settings. Codec availability also depends on software, operating system, and hardware. |
Changing from software to hardware encoding can help when CPU load is the bottleneck, but it is not a universal fix: the computer still has to render scenes and handle the rest of the production, and hardware encoder quality varies by generation. Diagnose the bottleneck, change one setting at a time, and retest.
