WebRTC is a standards-based set of browser APIs and network protocols for exchanging audio, video, and application data interactively. It is a strong fit when people need to talk, share, or respond with little perceptible delay; it is not automatically the best fit for delivering one-way video to a very large audience.
What WebRTC is
WebRTC is not a single streaming protocol. The W3C WebRTC 1.0 Recommendation defines browser-facing JavaScript APIs that let an application send and receive media and generic data. IETF specifications describe the protocols that make the exchange work. Together, they are intended to support audio, video, and data communication along the most direct viable path between participants.

In practice, an application uses the API to control a connection, uses a separate signaling mechanism to exchange setup details, and relies on connectivity procedures to find a working route. Once negotiated, media and data travel over that connection. The route can involve relay infrastructure; “WebRTC” does not guarantee a direct device-to-device path.

For camera and microphone use, a browser application can request access through the related local-media-device API. Access depends on browser support and the user’s authorization. No special WebRTC-branded hardware is inherent to the standard.

How a WebRTC connection works
1. The application obtains media or data
A web app can request local audio or video, such as a microphone and camera, or it can create a data channel for application information. The browser’s permission controls govern access to local devices.
2. Signaling coordinates setup
Before endpoints can communicate, the application must exchange connection setup information. WebRTC does not prescribe one signaling service or protocol: an app may implement signaling through its own service. Signaling is the coordination step, not the media transport.

3. ICE looks for a usable network path
Connectivity procedures account for common network complications, including NATs and firewalls. Depending on network conditions and configuration, traffic may pass directly or use a relay. Most WebRTC protocol elements assume UDP; TCP is also relevant in defined cases, including HTTP or WebSockets, TURN over TLS, and ICE-TCP.
4. Media and application data use different transport handling
Audio and video use SRTP in the WebRTC framework. Non-media data channels use SCTP encapsulated in DTLS. Data channels can be configured for reliable or unreliable delivery, allowing an application to choose behavior suited to its data rather than treating every message like a media stream.

What WebRTC is used for
WebRTC is designed for interactive communication: a response should remain observably connected to an action, on the order of hundreds of milliseconds in the IETF’s description. That is a definition of interactive timing, not a promise that every WebRTC connection achieves a particular latency.
- Browser-based audio and video calls
- Screen sharing and collaborative sessions
- File exchange and other application data
- Multiparty video applications
- Games that include voice communication
- Low-latency live media delivery when audience interaction or rapid response matters
When WebRTC is a good fit
Choose an architecture built around WebRTC when a delay of several seconds would disrupt the experience: for example, when participants need to converse naturally, react to a shared screen, coordinate an action, or exchange timely game or application events. It is especially useful when the application needs two-way interaction rather than simply playing a stream.

WebRTC can also deliver live media with low latency. However, serving a large one-way audience at low delay may require a dedicated premium service and operational trade-offs. IETF operational guidance notes that low-latency delivery at scale is generally feasible with restrictions; potential trade-offs include cost, media quality, adaptive-bitrate or resolution flexibility, and resilience to transient network problems.

WebRTC vs. HLS-style HTTP streaming
These are not interchangeable choices in every design. WebRTC prioritizes interactive exchange; HTTP-based streaming workflows commonly accept more delay in exchange for a different delivery and playback model. Decide based on the experience and operating constraints, not on the label “live.”

| Question | WebRTC-oriented design | Higher-latency HTTP streaming workflow |
|---|---|---|
| How quickly must viewers respond? | Best considered when interaction needs to feel closely connected to an action. | Suitable when some playback delay is acceptable. |
| Is the experience conversational? | A natural fit for two-way audio, video, screen sharing, or coordinated activity. | Often a better match for one-way viewing where immediate response is not essential. |
| What happens at large scale? | Low-latency delivery at scale may need specialized service and can bring cost and resilience trade-offs. | Compare the chosen delivery workflow’s scale and playback behavior against the audience and service requirements. |
| How important are adaptation and playback resilience? | Assess required adaptive-bitrate or resolution flexibility and tolerance for transient network problems; these may be trade-offs in low-latency delivery. | Assess the playback resilience and quality adaptation provided by the particular HTTP streaming architecture. |
There is no universal winner. If viewers mainly watch a one-way program and can tolerate more delay, a higher-latency workflow may be simpler to operate at scale. If they must interact with the presenter or one another with a quick response, WebRTC’s latency-oriented design may justify its infrastructure and operational demands.

WebRTC addresses interactive exchanges between endpoints; it is not, by itself, a service for keeping a prerecorded YouTube channel live around the clock. For that separate use case, StreamNeo keeps uploaded videos or playlists looping to YouTube from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs without a computer, OBS, or a home connection staying on. See StreamNeo for details.
Or let it run in the cloud
Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo does not re-encode it or use quality tiers. If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.

Questions to settle before choosing WebRTC
- What response delay is acceptable? Define it from the user’s perspective, including capture, network, processing, and playback—not just the transport.
- Is the session one-way or interactive? Two-way conversation and coordinated action strengthen the case for WebRTC.
- What scale and operating model are needed? Consider whether the service can support the expected audience and whether low-latency delivery costs and operational complexity are justified.
- How should the app handle network variation? Decide what quality adaptation and recovery behavior users need, and evaluate the architecture against those requirements.
- Which networks must work? Account for NATs, firewalls, and the possibility that a relay is needed rather than assuming every endpoint can connect directly.
- What data reliability is required? Choose data-channel delivery behavior according to whether the app needs reliable delivery or can tolerate loss or reordering.
- Are media permissions and privacy clear? Explain why the app needs camera or microphone access and let users grant or deny it through browser controls.
Standards and scope
The browser API foundation is the W3C’s 2021 WebRTC 1.0 Recommendation. The IETF’s 2020 RFC 8825 describes the protocol suite and interactive communication goal; 2021 RFC 8835 covers transport and network intermediaries, and 2021 RFC 8831 covers data channels. The examples of use cases are cataloged in informational 2015 RFC 7478; the operational discussion of low-latency delivery at scale comes from 2022 RFC 9317. These standards and guidance explain designs and trade-offs, not a guaranteed latency, universal scale limit, browser compatibility matrix, or service price.
