What Is a Video Codec? Audio and Video Codecs for YouTube Live

A codec compresses and decodes audio or video; a streaming protocol carries it. Learn YouTube Live’s codec support, protocol trade-offs, bitrate recommendations, and settings.

A codec encodes and decodes audio or video. In a YouTube live stream, your encoder compresses the video and audio with codecs before sending them to YouTube; YouTube then transcodes the incoming stream into formats for viewers. The codec is not the delivery protocol: codecs describe how media is encoded, while RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, or DASH describes how it is sent. You need a compatible combination of the two.

What a codec does in a live stream

“Codec” is short for coder-decoder. A video codec compresses and reconstructs moving images; an audio codec does the same for sound. Compression makes a stream practical to transmit, but the chosen codec affects compatibility, bitrate requirements, and the quality the encoder can preserve at a given bitrate.

Your encoder—software or hardware—applies the audio and video codecs. It sends the encoded stream to YouTube using an ingestion protocol. YouTube receives that stream and transcodes it for playback on viewers’ devices. A codec is therefore not a file format, a stream key, or a network protocol, though these pieces work together.

Codec versus streaming protocol

The protocol carries the encoded media from your encoder to YouTube. The codec compresses the media itself. They are separate choices, but not every codec works with every protocol, so check the combination supported by both your encoder and YouTube’s selected ingestion method.

Protocol Video codecs listed by Google Practical distinction
RTMP H.264 Suitable for normal, low, or ultra-low latency use cases, according to Google’s protocol comparison.
RTMPS H.264 Like RTMP, with encrypted transport; encryption does not itself improve picture quality.
HLS H.264, H.265/HEVC Encrypted, suited to higher-resolution use cases, and typically higher latency because it uses segments. YouTube’s HLS setup has additional requirements.
DASH H.264, VP9 Encrypted and suited to higher-resolution use cases; segment-based delivery typically means higher latency.

These compatibility and use-case descriptions are from Google’s YouTube Live Streaming Ingestion Protocol Comparison. YouTube’s general encoder-settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 as video codecs. That list is not a guarantee that every codec can be sent over every protocol.

Which codecs does YouTube Live support?

Video: H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1

YouTube’s general RTMP/RTMPS encoder settings list H.264, H.265 (also called HEVC), and AV1. H.264 is widely supported by encoders and is the video codec listed for RTMP and RTMPS in Google’s protocol comparison. HEVC and AV1 can offer more efficient compression than H.264, but your encoder and ingestion protocol must support the chosen combination. YouTube’s HLS guidance specifically adds HEVC support; the protocol comparison lists DASH with H.264 and VP9.

Audio: AAC or MP3 in general settings

YouTube’s general encoder settings list AAC and MP3 audio. For 5.1 surround sound over RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube says only AAC is supported. Its HLS setup page lists AAC, AC3, and EAC3 audio; do not assume those HLS-specific options apply to RTMP/RTMPS.

H.264 versus H.265 versus AV1

There is no universal “best” codec. Newer codecs can compress more efficiently, potentially reducing bitrate for comparable output, but practical results depend on encoder support, protocol compatibility, settings, and the viewer delivery pipeline. H.264 is a straightforward choice when compatibility is the priority. Consider HEVC or AV1 only when your encoder and chosen YouTube ingestion protocol support them and you have confirmed the stream is accepted and healthy. For HDR, YouTube’s current guidance specifies H.265/HEVC at 10-bit depth and says AV1 is not supported for HDR.

YouTube Live video and audio settings that matter

YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate guidance lists up to 60 fps, recommends CBR bitrate encoding, and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval that should not exceed 4 seconds. These are platform settings and recommendations, not universal codec rules.

  • Frame rate: Up to 60 fps, according to YouTube’s current settings page.
  • Keyframes: Set a 2-second interval; do not exceed 4 seconds.
  • Bitrate mode: Use constant bitrate (CBR), as recommended by YouTube.
  • Video structure: YouTube recommends square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC.
  • Audio sample rate: 44.1 kHz for stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1 audio.
  • Audio bitrate: 128 Kbps for stereo or 384 Kbps for 5.1, per YouTube’s recommendation.
  • Color: For SDR, YouTube lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit depth. For HDR, it lists H.265/HEVC and 10-bit depth; AV1 is not supported for HDR.

Use these as YouTube-specific encoder guidance and verify the current settings page when configuring an encoder, since platform support and recommendations can change.

Recommended bitrate by resolution and frame rate

Bitrate depends on resolution, frame rate, and codec. The figures below are YouTube’s “Recommended Bitrate setting” values, not guarantees of picture quality or a promise that a particular encoder or internet connection can sustain them.

Resolution and frame rate AV1 or H.265/HEVC H.264
720p at 30 fps 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps 17 Mbps
2160p (4K) at 60 fps 35 Mbps 50 Mbps

These recommendations are from YouTube’s encoder-settings page, current as reviewed on October 3, 2026. Check the page for other resolutions and frame rates. A stream with rapid motion or complex detail may be harder to encode cleanly than a static scene at the same resolution, so test with content resembling what you will actually stream.

Choose for a stable upload, not just the highest number

Run an upload speed test and choose a stream quality that your connection can sustain reliably. Leave capacity for network variation and other traffic rather than setting the encoder at the full measured upload rate. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the live event and monitoring stream health. If the connection struggles, reduce the resolution, frame rate, or bitrate and test again.

Advanced option: sending an HLS stream

HLS is not simply a codec setting in a typical encoder. YouTube’s HLS setup guide specifies implementation requirements: use TS segments, send HTTPS POST/PUT requests, maintain a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and use segment durations from one to four seconds. HLS turns off YouTube’s Ultra low-latency option. The guide lists H.264 and HEVC video, plus AAC, AC3, and EAC3 audio. Use HLS when your encoder or streaming implementation supports these requirements; otherwise, choose a protocol your setup can configure correctly.

Troubleshoot codec and stream-setting problems

  • YouTube rejects or cannot process the stream: Check that your video codec and ingestion protocol are a supported pair, and that the encoder is using the selected protocol. Refer to YouTube’s current settings and the protocol comparison rather than assuming every listed codec works with every protocol.
  • Stream health reports bitrate or connection trouble: Confirm that the upload connection can sustain the configured bitrate. Test with representative audio and motion, lower bitrate or quality if needed, and monitor stream health. YouTube’s LiveStreams API documentation describes stream-health errors: LiveStreams.
  • Keyframes or bitrate mode do not match guidance: Set a 2-second keyframe interval, keep it at or below 4 seconds, and use CBR.
  • Audio is missing or surround audio is incompatible: Check the selected audio codec and channel setup. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for general settings, and requires AAC for 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS.
  • HDR is not accepted as expected: YouTube’s current guidance specifies 10-bit H.265/HEVC for HDR and excludes AV1 HDR. Check the encoder’s output format and color settings.
  • HLS setup fails: Verify the TS segment format, HTTPS POST/PUT method, rolling playlist limit, and segment duration requirements in YouTube’s HLS guide.
