A VGA feature connector is a legacy internal header that carries digital video data and timing signals between a graphics adapter and auxiliary video hardware. It is not the external VGA socket used to connect a monitor. In Compaq’s 1996 Deskpro 2000 documentation, the feature connector is a 26-position header called the VESA Standard Feature Connector (VSFC), while the monitor connection is a separate DB-15 socket.
What the VGA feature connector does
The feature connector provides an auxiliary device access to the graphics card’s video path. Depending on the hardware, that could let a device receive or supply video data before it reaches the display output. IBM’s 1992 VGA/XGA technical-reference preview describes this kind of extension as a way for an adapter to access resources of the base video subsystem.

On the Compaq Deskpro 2000 VSFC, the documented signals include eight pixel-data lines, P0–P7, plus a pixel clock, blanking, horizontal sync, vertical sync, and control signals for overlay, external sync, and external clock. These are digital video-path signals, not the analog monitor signals people usually associate with a VGA display connection. See the Compaq Deskpro 2000 Technical Reference Guide (1996) for that system’s connector details.
How it differs from the VGA monitor connector
| Feature | VGA feature connector (VSFC) | External monitor connector |
|---|---|---|
| Location and role | Internal auxiliary header for video hardware | External connection for a display |
| Compaq Deskpro 2000 example | 26-position header | DB-15 socket |
| Signal purpose | Digital pixel data, timing, and control signals | Display connection to a monitor |
| Compatibility concern | Implementation-specific pinout and keying | Separate monitor-interface connection |
The comparison describes the Compaq documentation, not every graphics card ever made. “VGA” may refer to the graphics standard or, informally, the external monitor socket; “VGA feature connector” names a different, internal interface.

What hardware used it
Historical examples include video capture and overlay boards, MPEG decoders, and TV-tuner hardware. These examples explain why a graphics card might have the header, but do not mean every feature connector works with every auxiliary device. The IBM technical-reference preview describes the extension’s role; a 1998 excerpt from Upgrading and Repairing PCs discusses multimedia applications.
Why pinouts need to be checked carefully
Do not wire an auxiliary board based only on the connector’s shape or pin count. Signal names, pin assignments, direction controls, and keying can vary across implementations. For example, the Compaq table uses P0–P7, while a VESA-style mapping on AllPinouts labels the pixel lines PD0–PD7. Similar-looking names do not establish that two cards are electrically compatible.

For the Compaq Deskpro 2000 VSFC specifically, the guide assigns pins 14–21 to P0–P7, pin 22 to DCLK, pin 23 to BLANK, pin 24 to HSYNC, and pin 25 to VSYNC. Pins 4–6 are EVIDEO-, ESYNC-, and EDCLK; pin 13 is keyed, pins 7 and 12 are listed as not connected, and several positions are ground. Treat that mapping as specific to the documented system, not as a universal pinout.
- Identify the exact graphics card and auxiliary board models.
- Consult their manufacturer documentation for pin numbering, orientation, signal names, and signal direction.
- Confirm the header’s keying and ground positions before connecting hardware.
The AllPinouts VFC reference offers broader mapping context, but it should not replace the documentation for the specific card. The IBM reference is a technical-reference preview; its context does not make it a universal wiring guide.

Is a VGA feature connector useful today?
It is mainly relevant when identifying, restoring, or working with older PC graphics cards and their companion multimedia boards. A 26-pin header alone does not tell you which adapter will work, and the available documentation here does not establish current compatibility or parts availability. Use the manual for the exact hardware before attempting a connection.
For historical background on multimedia uses, see the 1998 excerpt from Upgrading and Repairing PCs.
