Dual-Link DVI, Explained: What the Second Link Does

Dual-link DVI uses two TMDS links, but the label alone does not guarantee a display mode. Check the source, adapter, and monitor specifications.

Dual-link DVI uses two TMDS signal links instead of the one used by single-link DVI. The term describes how the connection carries a signal; it does not guarantee that a particular computer, cable, display, or adapter can deliver a specific resolution or refresh rate.

What does “dual-link” mean on a DVI connection?

DVI sends video using Transition-Minimized Differential Signaling (TMDS). A single-link connection uses one TMDS link; a dual-link connection uses two. VESA’s certified-components directory distinguishes a receiver supporting “one dual-link DVI or two single links,” illustrating that dual-link is a signal-path configuration, not simply two separate DVI connections.

VESA stated on January 31, 2013, that the DVI standard limits TMDS clock rates to 165 MHz. That is a clock-rate limit, not a promise of a particular resolution or refresh rate. Actual display modes depend on the source, display, timing, cable, and any adapter in the path. VESA’s Dual-Mode DisplayPort article explains the clock limit and signal conversion.

Can a DisplayPort computer connect to a DVI display?

Yes, if the source and display support compatible modes and you use an appropriate adapter. VESA describes a Dual-Mode DisplayPort source as one that can output either DisplayPort or TMDS, allowing support for DVI and HDMI displays. The connector and electrical signal still need to be converted for a DVI cable and display, so a DisplayPort-to-DVI adapter is required.

For a single-link DVI display

Check that the adapter and source support the display’s required mode. The DisplayPort connector alone does not establish which DVI modes the full connection will support.

For a dual-link DVI display

Choose an adapter that explicitly supports dual-link DVI; do not assume a generic DisplayPort-to-DVI adapter does. VESA’s certified-components directory lists active DisplayPort-to-DVI dual-link adapter products, but a directory listing does not confirm compatibility with a particular computer, graphics card, monitor, resolution, or refresh rate. Check the specifications for all three devices. VESA certified-components directory

What should you check before connecting them?

  • Source: Confirm the computer or graphics card supports the required output mode.
  • Adapter: Verify that its specifications explicitly cover dual-link DVI if that is what the display requires, and check whether it is active.
  • Display: Confirm its input connector and supported resolution and refresh-rate modes.
  • Combination: Check compatibility for the exact source, adapter, and display rather than relying on the phrase “dual-link” alone.
