A USB hard drive is an external hard disk drive that connects to a computer or another compatible device through USB. USB describes how the drive connects and communicates; “hard drive” describes the storage device. A USB flash drive and a USB-connected SSD also use USB, but neither is a hard disk drive.
What does “USB hard drive” mean?
The phrase usually means an external HDD—hard disk drive—that connects to its host using USB. The drive may be a portable unit with the disk and USB interface built into its enclosure, or a hard disk installed in a separate USB enclosure.

NIST defines USB as a “type of standard cable, connector, and protocol for connecting computers, electronic devices, and power sources” in its USB glossary. In other words, USB names the connection and communication system, not the kind of storage inside a device.

When connected, a USB mass-storage device exchanges commands, data and status information with its host according to defined protocols. The USB Mass Storage Class describes that communication; it does not determine whether the storage medium is a spinning hard disk, flash memory or another type of device. The USB-IF’s Mass Storage Class Bulk-Only Transport specification describes this host-device exchange.

The distinction is explicit in the USB-IF’s Mass Storage Class CBI Transport Specification 1.1: its subclass codes do not specify a type of storage device, such as a CD-ROM or floppy drive. USB mass storage is therefore a broad interface category, not another name for a hard disk.
USB hard drive vs. USB flash drive vs. USB SSD
| Term | What it describes | Is it a hard disk drive? |
|---|---|---|
| USB hard drive | An external hard disk drive that connects through USB | Yes |
| USB flash drive | A small USB storage device using flash memory | No |
| USB SSD | A solid-state drive connected through USB | No; SSD means solid-state drive, not hard disk drive |
| USB storage | A broad term for storage devices that connect through USB | Not necessarily |
All three can be USB storage, but only the first is a hard disk drive. A general overview of USB storage devices also describes external portable USB hard disk drives and enclosures as examples of the category.

What is a USB enclosure?
A USB enclosure is a housing with an interface that lets a separately purchased drive connect externally to a host. An enclosure does not by itself tell you whether the installed drive is an HDD or SSD. Check the enclosure’s specifications for the supported drive type and dimensions, and check its documentation for host, connector and power compatibility.

No. The term identifies the kind of storage and connection, but it does not guarantee compatibility with every host. Whether a particular drive works depends on the drive model and the computer or other device, including supported connections, power requirements and operating-system support. Confirm those details in the documentation for both the drive and the intended host.
