A transmission control unit (TCU), also commonly called a transmission control module (TCM), is the electronic controller that processes vehicle and transmission signals and directs the transmission’s actuators to manage shifting. Its layout and operation depend on the transmission, and replacing one may require vehicle-specific programming and integration.
How a transmission control unit works
The TCU is part of a control loop: it evaluates relevant sensor signals, uses software to determine what the transmission should do, then sends commands through output stages to transmission actuators. Bosch describes those actuators as electrohydraulic or electromechanical, depending on the design. The unit may also perform diagnostic functions for the transmission and its components. Bosch Mobility’s overview of transmission control units outlines this role.

The inputs and control strategy are not identical in every vehicle. For example, in its guide to the Mercedes-Benz 722.8 CVT, Schaeffler describes a controller calculating the desired transmission ratio from engine torque and speed, vehicle speed, selector-lever position, shift program, and CAN signals. That is a system-specific example, not a universal input list. Schaeffler’s 722.8 diagnostic guide explains the example.
Hyundai KEFICO likewise describes using sensor information to assess vehicle conditions and driver needs, then controlling hydraulic and shift solenoid valves. The sensors, actuators, and software vary by application. Hyundai KEFICO’s automatic-transmission TCU information describes its approach.

Where the TCU is located
There is no single physical arrangement for every TCU. Bosch identifies three common architectures:
- Integrated (iTCU): incorporated into an electronic module.
- Transmission-attached (aTCU): mounted on the transmission.
- Stand-alone: installed as a separate control unit.
The arrangement is application-specific, so a TCU is not always a separate box or mounted in one fixed location.

How TCUs differ by transmission
Electronically controlled automatic transmissions include stepped automatics, continuously variable transmissions (CVTs), and dual-clutch transmissions. Their control tasks differ: a CVT controller may manage the desired ratio, while other transmission designs operate different combinations of clutches, gears, valves, or actuators. Hyundai KEFICO identifies stepped automatic and CVT applications and describes development for dry dual-clutch transmissions; these categories do not imply identical hardware or software.
Architecture and service needs also vary. The transmission type, whether the controller is integrated or separate, and what configuration is required after replacement are all vehicle-specific considerations. The available manufacturer information does not establish one architecture as universally better.

Does a shifting problem mean the TCU has failed?
No. A shifting complaint alone does not establish that the control unit is the cause. The TCU can support transmission diagnosis, but there is no universal symptom list that proves it has failed. Diagnosis should use fault codes and the service information for the exact vehicle and transmission rather than assuming the module is at fault.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What TCU replacement can involve
TCU replacement may involve more than installing a part. In service instructions issued in May 2025, Schaeffler says the work can include reading and buffering data before transfer to the replacement, software configuration, activating component protection, and integrating the unit into the vehicle system. Schaeffler characterizes these tasks as technically demanding and recommends trained, qualified personnel. Exact requirements depend on the vehicle and transmission. Schaeffler’s TCU handling and commissioning instructions provide the service guidance.
