For ordinary Zoom Meetings, automatically copying cloud recordings to Amazon S3 requires an integration: Zoom sends a recording-completed webhook, your server retrieves the authorized recording files, then writes them to an S3 bucket. The webhook is a trigger, not an upload to AWS. First identify whether you use Zoom Meetings, Video SDK, or Zoom Contact Center; the available native storage options differ by product.

Zoom’s Video SDK documentation says, “You can use Webhooks to automate distribution or uploading of the recording files to your own cloud storage system.” That statement describes the Video SDK documentation context; it does not mean all Meetings accounts have a native BYOS setting.

Set up an automated copy for Zoom Meetings
This route is for cloud recordings from ordinary Zoom Meetings. It does not retrieve a local computer recording: those files are saved on the computer that recorded the meeting and need a separate local file-watcher or upload process. Zoom cloud recording is available to paid subscribers on eligible tiers, and files can be downloaded after processing. - Confirm the source. Enable cloud recording for the account and confirm the meetings you need are being recorded to Zoom Cloud. If they are computer recordings, build around files on the recording computer instead.
- Subscribe to the completed-recording event. Create or configure a Zoom app with a webhook subscription for the recording-completed event, then expose a server endpoint to receive notifications. The event contains recording metadata and a list of files, including file type, name, status, and download URL. Consult the Zoom webhook reference for event details.
- Filter and retrieve files on your server. Process only files whose status indicates they are complete. Zoom documents that the event’s
download_tokenremains valid for 24 hours after notification; send it in anAuthorization: Bearerheader as shown in the webhook documentation. Keep retrieval server-side and treat this token as a short-lived credential: do not put it in browser-visible links, logs, or public object metadata. - Write each file to S3. Download the file bytes and send them to the bucket using your AWS SDK or equivalent. Zoom’s Video SDK developer example demonstrates the S3 write pattern with AWS SDK
PutObject; for Meetings, the webhook/API supplies recording information, while your implementation performs the S3 upload. See Zoom’s Video SDK recording-to-S3 example. - Track completion and failures. Store enough identifiers from the webhook, such as meeting UUID and recording file ID, to trace an S3 object back to its source and to make retries idempotent. Design your own retry, alerting, and backfill behavior; a successful webhook receipt does not prove the file was transferred.
Design the S3 archive and transfer behavior
Choose a predictable object key
Use a key scheme that makes objects traceable and avoids collisions—for example, a path containing the meeting date, a meeting identifier, and the recording file identifier. Treat that as an implementation choice, not a Zoom-prescribed format. Preserve the identifiers in your transfer records so a repeated event does not create unintended duplicate objects.

Handle every file in the event
A recording can produce multiple files, such as video, audio, chat, or transcript files when available. Iterate through the webhook’s file array rather than assuming one event corresponds to one object. Check each file’s status and record which individual files have been transferred.
Set a recovery path
Because the webhook token is time-limited, do not rely on replaying an old event as your only recovery method. Zoom’s Meetings API can return recording files and download URLs for authorized apps; its API documentation describes OAuth recording scopes. Zoom notes that download URLs may redirect, so retrieval code should follow redirects. Use the API as a recovery or historical backfill route, distinct from the webhook’s near-real-time trigger. Protect credentials and bucket access
- Keep Zoom credentials, webhook validation material, and AWS credentials on the server; grant the integration only the access it needs.
- Limit the S3 bucket and object permissions to the intended service and administrators. Avoid making recordings public unless that is an explicit, reviewed requirement.
- Decide whether the workflow is copy-only or whether you intend to change source retention. A custom upload does not by itself establish any change to Zoom’s copy or retention settings.
- Monitor event processing, download and upload failures, and retry exhaustion. Specify how operators can identify an affected meeting and safely retry its files.
Know what native BYOS does—and does not—cover
Video SDK
Video SDK’s documented BYOS route can send newly completed cloud recordings to configured S3 storage. It requires the applicable Video SDK plan or add-on and AWS setup. It is not a one-step migration for recordings already stored in Zoom Cloud.

Contact Center BYOS applies to supported Contact Center recordings and artifacts. Its documentation describes daily retries for failed uploads for up to 30 days and failure email alerts; it also says files remain in Zoom if retrying does not succeed. Those behaviors are specific to Contact Center and should not be assumed for a custom Meetings integration or Video SDK.

Meetings
For ordinary Meetings, the documented route described here is application-managed retrieval and S3 upload. Confirm account-specific feature availability, authorization scopes, and current product settings with Zoom before implementation; product enablement and eligibility can vary.

A meaningful storage-cost estimate depends on AWS region, recording volume and size, retention period, request pattern, and whether users download or stream archived files. Those inputs also affect transfer and retrieval costs, so estimate them against current AWS pricing for the bucket’s region rather than relying on a generic per-recording figure. Decide how long both Zoom and S3 copies should remain, and verify the chosen product’s retention behavior before assuming BYOS deletes or preserves a source copy.
