A text storage site is an online service where you submit text and receive a link others can open to read it. These services are commonly called pastebins. They make it easier to share code, logs, configuration examples, or short notes without putting a long block of text directly into a chat or email.
How does a text storage site work?
You enter or upload text to the service, which hosts it and provides a URL to the saved text. You can send that link to someone who needs to view the content. Depending on the service, the text may also be displayed with code formatting or offered in a raw-text view.

A pastebin is designed for convenient, link-based sharing. It is not the same as a local disk, a password manager, or a durable documentation system.
What do people use pastebins for?
- Code snippets: Share a short example or a piece of code that is awkward to paste into a message.
- Diagnostic logs: Send error output or other text from troubleshooting to someone helping investigate a problem.
- Structured data and configuration: Share JSON, configuration examples, or similar text while preserving its formatting.
- Temporary notes: Make a short piece of text available through a link for a limited time.
Are text storage sites private?
Do not treat an unlisted link as confidential. Pastebin.ca’s Help documentation describes unlisted URLs as “bearer links — treat them like secrets”: anyone who obtains the complete link may be able to open the text. A hard-to-guess URL limits discoverability, but it is not encryption.

Access controls address different risks. A visibility setting determines who can find or open a paste; a password adds a check for readers; an expiration setting limits how long the original service makes it available; and encryption can prevent the provider from reading the stored content if it is performed in the browser before upload. These protections are not interchangeable.
For example, Pastebin.ai documents an implementation in which normal and password-protected text is readable by the service, while its encrypted mode stores ciphertext. That description applies to Pastebin.ai’s documented design, not to every pastebin. Check the specific provider’s documentation to understand where encryption occurs and what its controls actually protect.

What happens when a paste expires or is deleted?
Expiration or deletion can stop people from accessing the text through its original service, but it cannot recall copies already made. A recipient may have downloaded or copied the text, taken a screenshot, or shared it elsewhere. Third-party copies may also remain. Pastebin.ai and pastebin.ca document provider-specific retention and deletion terms; consult those terms rather than assuming that removing a paste erases every copy.

- Visibility and access: Check whether pastes can be public, unlisted, password-protected, or restricted to account holders.
- Encryption: Determine whether readable text reaches the provider or whether it is encrypted in your browser before upload.
- Retention and deletion: Look for expiry choices, deletion controls, and caveats about backups or copies.
- Workflow: Confirm whether you need an account and whether the service offers raw-text or download views, language formatting, or an API.
Official documentation illustrates that these options vary. pastebin.ca describes public, unlisted, encrypted, and read-limited modes. Pastebin.com documents API fields for format, expiration, and visibility. Those are examples of provider-specific features, not guarantees that every service offers them.

Credentials and other secrets
Do not use a pastebin as a place to store passwords, API keys, or other credentials. Use a dedicated secret-management product designed for that purpose; Pastebin.ai’s terms make the same recommendation. A password on a paste does not turn it into a secure credential store.

Long-term team knowledge
For documentation that a team must maintain, review, and build on, use version-controlled documentation rather than relying on a temporary sharing link. A pastebin is useful for sending a text block; it is not a durable system for managing a project’s knowledge.
