A Tesla AI chip is usually a custom processor in a vehicle computer that runs trained AI models, including models used by Full Self-Driving (FSD). It is different from Dojo and Cortex, which are training-compute systems. Tesla’s AI5 and AI6 production dates are roadmap plans, not confirmation that those chips are already in production.
What does “Tesla AI chip” mean?
Most often, the term means Tesla-designed inference silicon for running AI software in a vehicle. Inference is the stage where a trained model processes new inputs—for example, vehicle camera data—rather than the stage where a model is trained.

Tesla describes its FSD chip work as building AI inference chips to run FSD software, with design attention to silicon performance per watt. This is Tesla’s own description of its engineering goals, not an independent technical assessment. Tesla’s AI page states that goal directly.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow is an in-car chip different from Dojo or Cortex?
These names refer to different parts of Tesla’s AI computing effort. AI5 and AI6 are discussed as inference chips for vehicle use; Dojo and Cortex refer to training compute and infrastructure. Training systems process data and train neural networks, while a vehicle inference chip runs a trained model on the car.

- EMERGENCY CHARGER RELEASE – GET UNSTUCK FAST: EjectX is a Tesla Supercharger release tool designed for situations where you need to leave quickly while charging. Release the charging cable from inside your vehicle and drive away without delay.
- QUICK DISCONNECT FOR TESLA CHARGING: Works with Tesla’s “Unlock Charge Port” function for a controlled charger release without tools or vehicle modification. Designed to help protect your charging port and vehicle.
- STAY INSIDE YOUR VEHICLE: EjectX lets you release the Supercharger cable without stepping outside, providing a fast, simple option during unsafe or unexpected situations.
- SIMPLE PLUG-IN, FULLY REUSABLE: Installs like an adapter and functions as a reusable Tesla charging accessory. Keep it in your vehicle so it is ready when needed.
- TESLA NACS & SUPERCHARGER COMPATIBILITY: Designed for compatible Tesla NACS charging ports and Supercharger V2, V3 and V4. Not compatible with home charging setups.
| System or term | Primary role | What the distinction means |
|---|---|---|
| AI5 and AI6 | Vehicle AI inference | Designed to run AI models in vehicles; Tesla has announced production plans for these generations. |
| Dojo | Training compute | A custom supercomputer project for processing fleet video and training neural networks; it is not the in-car inference chip. |
| Cortex | Training compute infrastructure | A separate part of Tesla’s training infrastructure. Tesla’s Q1 2026 update said Cortex 2 was online and running training workloads. |
Tesla also said in its Q1 2026 update that custom silicon development with Dojo 3 continued. In its Q2 2026 update, the company described semiconductor fab work as an early-stage effort to build capabilities for long-term supply of logic and memory chips. These are infrastructure and development efforts, not evidence that Dojo or Cortex is an in-car chip.
What is the FSD computer?
The processor is part of a vehicle compute assembly, not a standalone consumer chip. Tesla describes the FSD computer as the physical link between custom silicon and the rest of the vehicle. Packaging and thermal design matter because the computer must operate in a vehicle environment. More detail on this scope appears in Tesla’s AI hardware and FSD computer careers information.

- International products have separate terms, are sold by road and may differ from local products, including fit, age ratings, and language of product, labelling or instructions.
A powerful processor also does not make a car autonomous. Tesla’s FSD product page says: “Currently enabled features require active driver supervision and do not make the vehicle autonomous.”
What are AI5 and AI6, and when are they planned?
Tesla’s Q1 2026 update said the final AI5 chip design was completed in April. Its Q2 2026 update said production was planned for 2027 for AI5 and 2028 for AI6. These are company roadmap statements; they do not establish that either chip generation is currently in production or deployed in vehicles.
Tesla’s Q1 2026 update gave the following AI5 targets relative to AI4:
- 10× raw compute
- 9× memory capacity
- 5× hardened block quantization and softmax
- 50× total performance improvement
These are Tesla’s targets, not independently measured benchmark results. The 50× figure is Tesla’s aggregate target; the listed component multipliers should not be multiplied together to reproduce it. The available public material does not provide consistent, independently measured generation-by-generation benchmark data for a quantitative comparison.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- HOW IT WORKS - One ring works with multiple vehicles. The ring is compatible with Tesla Model S and Model X vehicles produced in 2021 and later, as well as all Model 3, Model Y, and Cybertruck vehicles
- ACTIVATION & USE - Pair the ring through the vehicle’s control panel the same way you would pair a key card. To unlock or lock the car, locate the sensor on the B-pillar below the driver-side camera and gently tap your knuckle against the B-pillar (knocking position). Do not touch the ring directly to the vehicle
- SECURITY - The ring offers the same security level as a Tesla key card
- HANDMADE - Made from premium materials. We engineered the ring to be exceptionally thin and lightweight, making it extremely comfortable to wear
- NO CHARGING & WATERPROOF - Never worry about being locked out when your phone battery dies. CNICK Rings are fully waterproof, no need to remove your ring while washing your hands, showering, or swimming

- To avoid buying the wrong key fob holder and wasting time and money, please compare your car key with the gallery lifestyle pictures
- Includes both front and back cover panels, providing excellent coverage to protect your expensive car key/panel /transmitter from dirt, shocks, drops, scratches, dents, water damage, and more, ensuring it stays in great condition
- This hard shell keyfob case made with ABS plastic features a durable and attractive gloss finish, providing a more stylish and resilient alternative to silicone/rubber jackets, and unlike alloy metal key cases, it ensures no weakening of keyless entry or engine start functionality
- Easy to install in just a minute, this cover guards over the original key to decorate your dull car key a unique new appearance with full protection, showcasing your love for your vehicle and adding a touch of personal style
What should you take away from the term?
- In most contexts, “Tesla AI chip” means custom in-vehicle inference silicon used to run AI models such as FSD.
- Dojo and Cortex are training systems, not alternative names for the chip inside a car.
- AI5 and AI6 dates and AI5 performance figures are Tesla plans and targets, not proof of production status or independent test results.
- FSD features still require active driver supervision and do not make a Tesla autonomous.
