A standard TCP/IP port is a TCP port number associated by convention or registry assignment with an application service. The number itself is a 16-bit value from 0 to 65,535; it helps TCP deliver traffic to the right service and distinguish simultaneous communications. A familiar port number does not, by itself, prove that a service is running or reachable.
What does a TCP port do?
A TCP port is a number in the TCP header that identifies an application service and helps TCP multiplex distinct flows between hosts. As RFC 9293 puts it, “TCP uses port numbers to identify application services and to multiplex distinct flows between hosts.”

Each TCP segment carries a source port and a destination port. Along with the communicating systems’ IP addresses, those values help identify a particular session. The IP address identifies a network endpoint; the port identifies a service or communication endpoint on that system. The combination—not a port number in isolation—distinguishes a communication.
What are the standard TCP port ranges?
TCP port numbers use 16 bits, giving a range of 0 through 65,535. The IANA categories defined in RFC 6335 are:
#1 Best Overall
- Users can print from virtually anywhere on the network to the connected USB printer.
- It can be configured using a web-browser setup utility, or Windows PS Admin.
- Sharing a single USB printer eliminates the need to maintain and purchase supplies for multiple printers.
- The dedicated print server removes the need to have a dedicated computer powered on to support the printer.
- TCP/IP, NetBEUI, and AppleTalk transport protocols using a 10/100 Fast Ethernet port.
| Range | Category | IANA assignment status |
|---|---|---|
| 0–1023 | System ports, also called Well Known Ports | Assigned by IANA |
| 1024–49151 | User ports, also called Registered Ports | Assigned by IANA |
| 49152–65535 | Dynamic ports, also called Private or Ephemeral Ports | Not assigned by IANA as service ports |
These are registry categories, not different kinds of TCP connection. RFC 7605 notes that “registered” can be used ambiguously: it may mean all assigned numbers from 0 through 49,151 or specifically the User range. When precision matters, use the System, User, and Dynamic labels.
Is a port number the same as an IP address?
No. An IP address identifies a network endpoint, while a TCP port identifies a service or endpoint within that system. TCP uses the source and destination IP addresses together with the source and destination ports to distinguish sessions. A server can therefore offer multiple services at one IP address, and a device can maintain multiple TCP communications at once.

- ⭐SHARED PRINTERS: Think it's a hassle to maintain a print host? Connect to your LAN via an RJ45 network cable, and multiple computers on your LAN can share a USB printer or a machine that requires an additional printer, saving you money and space, and reducing cable clutter. (Only print function is supported).
- ⭐USB2.0 TRANSPORT: The server complies with the USB2.0 transport standard (compatible with USB1.1), provides an adaptive Ethernet interface, and supports multiple protocols and multiple operating systems. It provides an adaptive Ethernet interface that supports multiple protocols and multiple operating systems.
- ⭐UNIVERSAL COMPATIBILITY: Using an RJ45 port, the connector works with any LAN-only device such as smart TVs, printers, game consoles, cameras, laptops, and more. No driver installation is required. Compatible with EPSON LQ-730K pin printers, EPSON LQ-630K pin printers, EPSON LQ-635K pin printers, EPSON R290 inkjet printers, HP F2100 series all-in-one printers
- ⭐HIGHLY INTEGRATED CHIP: The print server utilizes a low-power, highly integrated chip that provides significant energy savings and cost reductions compared to traditional printers. The server allows you to print from any computer on the network. It allows users to configure and print files through a web browser. It also comes with a 1.5 meter ANPTH cat5e network cable.
- ⭐NETWORK MANAGEMENT FUNCTION: The print server's built-in network management function allows users to configure, monitor, and even reset the print server through a browser, thus providing more convenience to users. It is suitable for home or business applications, and government or educational institutions that require shared printing capabilities.
What does “standard” mean, and does a port prove a service is running?
“Standard port” usually means a port assigned in the registry or commonly used by a service. TCP’s port field, however, is simply a number. The service interpretation depends on the communicating endpoints’ agreement and configuration, as explained in RFC 6335 and RFC 7605. A service can be configured to use a different port, and an assigned or customary port may have no active listener. A port number alone cannot show whether a service is running or reachable; firewalls and NAT devices can also allow, block, or translate traffic based on ports.
