It is not a physical connector, and a port number alone does not prove which application is using it.
What a software port number means
RFC 7605 defines a port number as a 16-bit number used for two purposes: demultiplexing transport endpoint associations within a host and identifying a service. In practical terms, a computer uses port information to deliver incoming network traffic to the appropriate communication endpoint. The number belongs to the networking software and transport protocol, not to a physical socket on the device.

A network connection is distinguished using more than a port number. The source and destination IP addresses, source and destination port numbers, and transport protocol work together to identify the communicating endpoints and transport session.
How a port number identifies a service
Port numbers are also used as conventional service identifiers. The IANA Service Name and Transport Protocol Port Number Registry records service names, port numbers, transport protocols, and assignment details. These shared defaults help systems communicate without having to negotiate a service mapping from scratch each time.

- GIGABIT ETHERNET PORTS: Features 5 x 1.0Gbps Ethernet ports for high-speed connectivity. Auto-negotiating ports detect the optimal speed for connected devices and work with existing Cat5e or Cat6 Ethernet cables.
- PLUG-AND-PLAY UNMANAGED NETWORK SWITCH: Simple plug-and-play setup with no software to install or configuration required.
- FLEXIBLE MOUNTING OPTIONS: Compact metal design supports desktop or wall-mount placement for versatile installation.
- SILENT & ENERGY-EFFICIENT OPERATION: Fanless design ensures silent performance, while IEEE 802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet reduces power consumption without compromising high-speed network performance.
- REGIONAL COMPATIBILITY: Made for use in U.S. & CA only
The mapping is a convention, not proof of what is running. A service can use a different port if the communicating endpoints are configured to use it, and an assigned port does not guarantee that the corresponding service is actually present. Network equipment that guesses an application solely from a port number can therefore be wrong.
Port numbers are specific to a transport protocol
A number must be considered together with its transport protocol. For example, a TCP port and a UDP port with the same number are distinct registry entries and may be used for different purposes. TCP, UDP, SCTP, and DCCP are among the transport protocols that use port numbers. When checking an assignment, specify the protocol and consult the current IANA registry.

IANA port-number ranges
The IANA registry, last updated September 30, 2026, divides port numbers into these ranges:

| Category | Range | What the category means |
|---|---|---|
| System Ports | 0–1023 | Ports assigned through IANA. |
| User Ports | 1024–49151 | Ports assigned through IANA. |
| Dynamic and/or Private Ports | 49152–65535 | Ports generally used dynamically or privately rather than assigned in the registry in the same way as System and User ports. |
These are IANA categories, not universal operating-system permission rules. RFC 7605 notes that System Ports do not always require special privileges, such as root access. It also notes that System and User Ports are both sometimes called “registered,” making that term ambiguous.

Is a software port number a physical port?
No. In networking, a software port number is a logical value used by a transport protocol. An Ethernet jack, USB connector, or other hardware socket is a physical port. The shared word does not mean they are the same thing: a network connection may use a software port number regardless of which physical network interface carries its traffic.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does a port number identify a specific program?
Not by itself. A port number can indicate a conventional service mapping, but the actual application depends on what is configured at the endpoints. To understand a connection, consider the port number alongside its transport protocol, the IP addresses, and the local configuration. For service assignments, the IANA registry is the authoritative lookup rather than an old static list.
