Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 is the higher-tier, higher-clocked platform in this comparison. Qualcomm lists its CPU speed at up to 4.74 GHz, versus up to 3.8 GHz for Snapdragon 8 Gen 5. Representative retail-device benchmark figures also favor Elite Gen 5, but they are not controlled, matched-phone test results. For a purchase, the specific phone’s cooling, power settings, memory and regional chip configuration matter as much as the chipset name.
How the two chips are positioned
Qualcomm places both processors in its premium Snapdragon 8 family, but Elite Gen 5 occupies the higher tier of this pair. Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 is positioned as a premium option intended to bring flagship-level capabilities to more consumers. The distinction is reflected in the published CPU clocks, although peak frequency alone does not establish how a phone will perform over sustained use.

The results point in the same direction across the listed CPU, overall-system and graphics tests: Elite Gen 5 scores higher in this database comparison. They should not be read as guaranteed scores for a phone you buy. Retail-device cooling, firmware, power limits and platform variants can differ, and the comparison does not establish matched test conditions. See TechPP’s comparison and methodology notes.
Keep Qualcomm’s generational claims separate
Qualcomm also publishes performance improvements against each chip’s respective prior-generation baseline. In its 2025 launch announcement, Qualcomm claimed Elite Gen 5 gains of 20% in CPU performance, 23% in graphics performance and 37% in NPU performance. In a separate 2025 announcement, Qualcomm claimed Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 improvements of up to 36% in CPU performance, 76% in web-browsing responsiveness, 11% in GPU performance and up to 46% in NPU performance. These are vendor claims against stated earlier-generation baselines, not direct Elite Gen 5 versus Gen 5 results; the percentages cannot be combined to calculate a head-to-head advantage. What the differences mean for a phone buyer
CPU and everyday responsiveness
Elite Gen 5’s higher listed peak CPU clock and its lead in the cited Geekbench 6 results make it the stronger choice on paper for CPU-heavy work. Actual responsiveness also depends on the phone’s software and power behavior; a peak clock does not show how long a device can sustain a demanding workload.
Gaming and graphics
The reported 3DMark result favors Elite Gen 5, but it is a database score rather than a sustained gaming test. For gaming, compare the exact phones’ cooling, power modes, display resolution, game settings and sustained frame-rate behavior. Qualcomm’s feature descriptions alone do not establish how a particular game will run.

Memory, cameras and AI features
Elite Gen 5’s listed memory speed ceiling is higher, while both briefs list support for up to 24 GB of memory, UFS 4.1, triple 20-bit AI ISPs, up to 320 MP photo capture and 4K video capture up to 120 fps. Maximum platform support does not mean a handset includes the maximum memory or camera capability. Sensor quality, lenses, image processing and which software features the manufacturer enables shape the camera and AI experience.
Check the exact model and region
Qualcomm announced an Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy version for the Galaxy S26 series and named OnePlus as an OEM for Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 devices. Those announcements do not confirm current stock, pricing or that every regional version of a phone uses the same processor. Verify the chipset and configuration on the manufacturer’s page for the specific model sold in your market.

Which one should you choose?
- Choose a phone with Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 if you want the higher-tier option in this pairing and prioritize the stronger published clock and reported database benchmark results.
- Consider a Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 phone if its complete device, features and local price suit you better; the chip still belongs to Qualcomm’s premium 8-series lineup.
- Compare phones, not just processors before buying: check exact regional chipset, memory, cooling, display, software support and the price of the handset. The available benchmark comparison does not determine which complete phone is the better value.
