A software media player is an application whose main job is to play digital audio, video, or other multimedia. It can open local files and, depending on the application, play content from discs, connected devices, or network streams. What it can play depends on the player, the media format, and the codecs or other components available.
What does a software media player do?
A player opens or receives media and provides playback functions such as play, pause, seeking, and volume control. Some players handle audio and video; others focus mainly on one. Libraries, playlists, subtitles, and streaming features may be included, but they are not required for software to count as a media player.

For example, VideoLAN describes VLC as a free, open-source, cross-platform multimedia player and framework. Its documentation lists multimedia files, Blu-ray discs, DVDs, Audio CDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols as supported sources: VLC documentation.

How is a player different from a file format or codec?
These terms describe different parts of playback:
- Player: The application that opens or receives media and provides playback controls.
- Container or file format: The structure that holds media data. A familiar file extension does not guarantee that every player can decode every stream inside the file.
- Codec: Technology used to encode or decode audio or video. A player may need an appropriate codec to play particular content.
Microsoft explains that AVI is a container that can hold content compressed using different codecs. Playback depends on whether the necessary codec is available. Its support documentation also notes that Windows Media Player may require appropriate codecs for some content: Microsoft’s Windows Media Player file-type guidance.

Why does compatibility vary?
Support differs among players and can depend on the player’s version and installed components. Microsoft’s documentation describes Windows Media Player 12 and lists supported formats, including Windows Media formats, AVI, MPEG-related formats, WAV, MP4-family formats, AAC, and FLAC. The page also describes format- and codec-specific limitations; that list is not a universal compatibility list for all media players.
When checking whether a player will work for a particular need, look at the specific requirements rather than relying on an extension alone:

- Whether it handles the needed source, such as a file, disc, connected device, or network stream.
- Whether it supports the specific container, codecs, subtitles, or other media features involved.
- Whether extra codecs or components are required.
What does “media player” mean for software developers?
In Microsoft’s developer documentation, the Windows Media Player SDK is marked as a legacy feature, superseded by MediaPlayer. This is guidance about that development SDK, not a general assessment of consumer media-player applications: Microsoft Learn’s Windows Media Player developer documentation.
