To control a soundbar with a DIRECTV remote, first identify whether you have a Genie satellite receiver or a Gemini streaming device: their setup menus differ. On Genie, program the audio device and, if needed, set Volume Lock to use it. On Gemini, choose Speaker System in the remote-programming settings. These steps program remote commands; they do not connect the soundbar to your TV or receiver for audio.
Before you start: identify your DIRECTV system
DIRECTV does not use one universal soundbar-pairing menu. The steps below cover the Genie satellite and Gemini streaming workflows. DIRECTV’s remote troubleshooting page distinguishes Genie, Universal, and Gemini remotes; check your device and the label on the remote before proceeding. The Genie receiver manual identifies Genie remotes as RC71 and above, but that older manual is not a compatibility guarantee for every receiver or soundbar.

Program a soundbar with a Genie satellite remote
- Enable RF on the remote. The Genie setup guidance calls for RF to be enabled. If the receiver’s menus differ, follow the current on-screen instructions.
- Open the audio-device setup. On the receiver, go to Menu > Settings > Remote Control > Pair/Program Remote > Program Audio Device. Some receiver software uses the shorter path Settings > Remote Control > Program Remote; choose the audio device and follow the displayed prompts.
- Select the soundbar. Enter or select its brand and model. If the receiver reports that code transmission failed, retry as prompted; if it offers other codes, try them rather than assuming the first match is correct.
- Test volume. When prompted, press VOL+ and confirm that the soundbar responds. Brand selection alone does not confirm that the remote controls it.
- Set Volume Lock if prompted or needed. Choose Change Volume Lock > Use Audio Device > OK. This directs the remote’s volume buttons to the audio device rather than the TV. DIRECTV Community Support specialist Jhoan described Volume Lock this way in a response on the DIRECTV Community page “TC 71 and 73 remote”; menu options can vary by receiver and software.
Program a soundbar with a Gemini streaming remote
- Press HOME.
- Open Settings > System > Remote & Devices > Program Your Remote.
- Choose Speaker System, select the soundbar brand, and follow the prompts to configure volume control.
- Test the volume buttons on the soundbar. If an update has changed the labels, use the options shown on your Gemini device.
This is a separate workflow from Genie satellite setup. The Gemini steps come from a DIRECTV Community Team support response, so exact labels and available choices may depend on device software.
If the remote will not control the soundbar
- Recheck the system type. Genie satellite and Gemini streaming remotes use different menus; a generic instruction for a “DIRECTV remote” may not fit your device.
- Try another available code. Retry the receiver’s on-screen process and test each offered code. The available guidance does not establish one soundbar code that works across all models.
- Check volume routing on Genie. Programming the device and assigning the volume buttons to it are separate steps. If the soundbar was recognized but volume still controls the TV, set Volume Lock to Use Audio Device.
- Check how commands reach the soundbar. RF is part of the Genie setup guidance, but many audio-device commands use infrared (IR). Make sure the soundbar accepts the command type and that the remote has a clear path to its IR sensor if required.
- Verify the soundbar’s audio connection separately. Remote programming does not create an HDMI ARC/eARC, optical, or other audio connection. Confirm that the soundbar is connected to the TV or receiver through its intended input.
- Ask for model-specific support if the device is missing. If the soundbar brand or model is not offered, the available guidance does not establish universal compatibility. Check with DIRECTV or the soundbar manufacturer for the exact remote, receiver, and soundbar models.
Genie and Gemini setup at a glance
| System | Setup path | Verification |
|---|---|---|
| Genie satellite | Settings > Remote Control > Pair/Program Remote > Program Audio Device (some software uses Program Remote) | Test VOL+; set Volume Lock to Use Audio Device if needed |
| Gemini streaming | HOME > Settings > System > Remote & Devices > Program Your Remote > Speaker System | Follow the prompts and test soundbar volume |
Menu names and compatibility may change with hardware and software. Use your device’s current on-screen prompts when they differ from these paths.
