A soft access point (SoftAP) is a Wi-Fi access point created by a device using its Wi-Fi hardware and software. Nearby phones, computers, or other Wi-Fi clients can connect to the network that device hosts. “Soft” describes how the access point is implemented; it does not guarantee internet access, a particular security level, a client limit, or the ability to connect to another Wi-Fi network at the same time.
What does “soft access point” mean?
A soft access point is an access-point function provided by a device rather than a separate physical access point being part of the definition. The device uses its Wi-Fi radio and software to host a network that nearby Wi-Fi clients can join. The terms SoftAP and soft AP are common variants. Android also uses SAP and hotspot for this configuration; its SoftApConfiguration reference calls it “a.k.a. Soft AP, SAP, Hotspot.”

Microsoft describes devices setting up a SoftAP through supported Wi-Fi driver functionality. In its WPA3 documentation, Microsoft Learn says the feature lets devices set up a SoftAP using WPA3-SAE security. This is a driver- and capability-dependent example, not a universal requirement for every SoftAP.
How is a SoftAP used?
Provisioning a device
A common use is setting up an embedded or headless product that has no screen or keyboard. The product starts a Wi-Fi network, a phone or computer joins it, and an app or setup page passes the credentials for the user’s regular Wi-Fi network to the product. The device can then stop hosting the setup network or switch networking modes and join the user’s network. An Inventek Systems application note describes this pattern for eS-WiFi modules.

Tethering or local-only access
A SoftAP may also support tethering or connections limited to a local network. Hosting a Wi-Fi network does not, by itself, mean that clients can reach the internet. Android’s SoftApConfiguration API distinguishes tethered and local-only hotspot configurations, so the purpose and network services depend on the implementation.
What does the term not tell you?
“SoftAP” names the access-point role, not a fixed set of capabilities. Check the specific device, operating system, driver, firmware, and configuration to establish:

- Internet access: whether the device routes or shares an internet connection, or only provides local connectivity.
- Security: which authentication and encryption modes are available and configured.
- Capacity and services: how many clients can join and whether services such as DHCP, routing, or internet sharing are provided.
- Radio options: supported bands and channels, and whether the device can host an access point while connecting to another Wi-Fi network.
These are implementation details, not universal properties of a SoftAP. For example, the Android API exposes band and security settings, while Microchip’s WiFly Command Reference Manual documents particular RN modules and their network functions. Those module-specific capabilities should not be applied to every SoftAP.

How does SoftAP security vary?
Security support depends on the platform and its Wi-Fi hardware, driver, firmware, and selected settings. Android lists security types including WPA2-PSK and WPA3-SAE in its SoftApConfiguration reference. Microsoft’s WPA3 SoftAP driver documentation describes WPA3-SAE on supported WiFiCx drivers and a transition mode that can accommodate WPA2-PSK alongside WPA3-SAE, subject to driver capability. A SoftAP is therefore not necessarily open or protected by any one standard; check the device’s actual settings and documentation.

Can a device use SoftAP and connect to Wi-Fi at the same time?
Some devices can run an access point and a station connection concurrently, but behavior is hardware- and driver-dependent. The interfaces may share a single radio, constraining channel choices and performance. Silicon Labs’ Wi-Fi and Ethernet Interfaces documentation says its WLAN and SoftAP interfaces share the Wi-Fi radio and recommends using the same channel for optimum throughput and reliability. The ESP8266 project’s Soft Access Point Class documentation likewise notes a one-hardware-channel limit in AP-plus-station mode. These examples describe specific platforms, not a rule for all devices.

Available controls vary by implementation. On ESP8266, for example, the documented softAP API accepts an SSID and optional pre-shared key, and includes parameters for channel, hidden-network behavior, and maximum connections. These are ESP8266-specific options, not a universal SoftAP feature list. Android exposes its own configuration for hotspot bands and security types through SoftApConfiguration.
