It connects the physical device to its apps, controls how software uses resources such as the camera and GPS, and helps determine which apps and services work on the phone.
What a smartphone operating system does
The OS sits between the phone’s hardware and its applications. It provides the interface and controls people use, coordinates device functions, and gives apps approved ways to use hardware and system services. For example, when an app needs the camera, location, Bluetooth, or a network connection, the operating system is part of the layer that mediates that access.

An OS is more than the home screen or the apps installed on a phone. It is also distinct from the physical handset: the handset supplies components such as the screen, microphone, camera, and radios, while the OS coordinates those components and provides a platform for software.

How the OS connects hardware and apps
Android offers one concrete example of how an OS is structured. Its documented software stack includes the Linux kernel, hardware abstraction layer (HAL), Android Runtime (ART), and application framework. These parts have different roles: the HAL exposes device capabilities, such as camera and Bluetooth functions, to higher software layers, while the runtime and framework provide services apps can use.

This is an example, not a blueprint that applies to every smartphone operating system. The broader idea is that apps generally rely on operating-system interfaces and services rather than communicating with every hardware component on their own.
How an operating system differs from apps and an app store
- The operating system manages device resources and provides shared services and interfaces for apps.
- An app is software that runs on the OS to perform a specific task, such as messaging, navigation, or taking photos.
- An app store is a distribution service for finding and installing apps; it is not the operating system itself.
These pieces work together, but they are not interchangeable. The OS provides the foundation; apps use that foundation; and an app store is one route for obtaining compatible apps.

Why the operating system matters when choosing or using a phone
The OS affects which apps are available and compatible, how apps use device features, and how the phone connects with a vendor’s wider services and products. Compatibility can depend on the particular device, software version, app, and market, so a general description should not be taken to mean every phone or regional setup behaves identically.
