What Is a Single-Board Computer? Definition, Examples and How It Differs From Similar Boards

A single-board computer packs processing, memory, storage interfaces and connectivity onto one circuit board. Here is what that means and how SBCs differ from compute modules and microcontrollers.

A single-board computer (SBC) is a complete computing system built on one circuit board. Processing, memory, storage interfaces and connectivity are integrated onto that board instead of being spread across separate components, as in a conventional desktop. That is the definition Supermicro gives in its technical glossary, and it is the most useful one because it defines the category by integration, not by size, brand or operating system.

The definition, and what it does not say

The key idea is that the essentials of a working computer sit on one board. The exact components and capabilities vary by design. Two SBCs can differ widely in processor architecture, memory, ports, storage options and expansion.

So the definition does not guarantee any of the following:

  • A particular size. Raspberry Pi describes its flagship SBC line as roughly credit-card sized, but that is one manufacturer’s form factor, not a rule for the category.
  • A particular operating system. Raspberry Pi’s flagship boards run a full Linux operating system, but that is a feature of that product family, not a requirement for being an SBC.
  • A particular port layout or expansion path.
  • Desktop-replacement performance. Capability depends on the model and the workload.

A familiar example: Raspberry Pi

Raspberry Pi’s hardware documentation identifies its flagship series as single-board computers. It describes them as offering a full Linux operating system and common ports in a compact form factor. They are the board most people picture when they hear the term.

What an SBC is not

Raspberry Pi’s own product taxonomy shows where the boundaries lie. Not every small board qualifies.

Category Raspberry Pi example How it differs
Single-board computer Flagship Raspberry Pi series Self-contained, with common ports on the board and a full Linux OS
Compute module Raspberry Pi Compute Modules No onboard connectors. It connects to a separate baseboard that supplies ports and pins.
Microcontroller board Raspberry Pi Pico Documented as “Small and versatile boards that don’t run Linux.”

These distinctions come from Raspberry Pi’s documentation. They illustrate the terms but are not a universal definition of compute modules or microcontrollers.

SBC versus traditional or modular systems

The trade-off of integration is flexibility. Supermicro notes that traditional or modular systems may offer greater expansion and scalability. An SBC suits compact, fixed-purpose or cost-conscious uses, while a modular system suits workloads that need to grow. The right architecture depends on the deployment.

How to compare SBCs

Because SBCs vary so much, compare boards on these points:

What setting one up involves (Raspberry Pi example)

Requirements depend on the manufacturer and model. For Raspberry Pi, the official getting-started documentation covers the following.

  • Boot media: the operating system image is installed on a storage card. Raspberry Pi recommends at least 32 GB for the desktop variants of Raspberry Pi OS and at least 8 GB for Raspberry Pi OS Lite. Other vendors and operating systems may differ.
  • Power: use a power supply suited to your specific model.
  • Desktop setup: add a display, keyboard, mouse and the right cables.
  • Headless setup: skip those peripherals and use network connectivity and remote access instead.

Check the documentation for your chosen board before buying accessories, since cables, power and storage vary by model.
