What Is a Shared Storage Array? How It Works and When to Use One

A shared storage array lets multiple hosts access common storage. Learn how it relates to a SAN, how it differs from NAS, and what safe concurrent access requires.

A shared storage array is a storage system configured so multiple servers or other hosts can access common storage concurrently. The array supplies the storage; a storage area network (SAN) is one common way to connect it to hosts. Shared access also depends on compatible host behavior and configuration—it does not automatically make simultaneous writes safe.

What a shared storage array is

IBM defines shared storage as storage configured for concurrent access by multiple homogeneous or heterogeneous hosts. It describes the storage as having a uniform appearance to those hosts, which must use a common model for the information on the device. In practical terms, several servers can be given access to storage held in one system rather than each relying only on its own local drives. IBM’s DS8900 glossary provides the definition.

A storage array is the system that provides the storage. It typically includes storage media, controllers, and management software; hosts use storage allocated from it as logical volumes. The word “shared” describes how hosts access that storage, not a specific network protocol or a guarantee that every application can use the same data safely.

How an array differs from a SAN

A SAN, or storage area network, is a dedicated network architecture that connects servers with storage systems. It can include servers, host bus adapters, switches, storage, software, and services. The array supplies storage, while the SAN carries storage traffic between the array and its hosts. IBM describes SANs as a way to connect multiple hosts to shared storage pools in its SAN overview.

In a common SAN arrangement, the array presents volumes or logical units to servers as block devices. The server’s operating system and applications work with those blocks, typically using a file system or another data structure above them. Fibre Channel and iSCSI are common SAN transport options; the particular protocols and supported configurations depend on the systems involved.

Shared block storage versus NAS file storage

NAS (network-attached storage) usually presents files and directories over a network using protocols such as SMB or NFS. A SAN commonly presents block volumes to hosts. This distinction matters because applications, operating systems, and administrators interact with the two access models differently.

This is a general comparison, not a rule that all systems fit only one category. Unified storage systems can provide both block and file access, and capabilities vary by system. IBM’s SAN overview and NAS overview describe the distinction and trade-offs.

Why concurrent access needs coordination

Multiple hosts being able to reach a volume does not mean they can all safely write to it without coordination. A regular single-host file system mounted read/write by several unrelated hosts may be corrupted if those hosts do not coordinate their changes. IBM’s definition requires a common model for the information, and its related guidance emphasizes that programs must account for concurrent access.

Before allowing multiple hosts to write to the same data, verify that the file system, application, and host configuration support that arrangement. Depending on the workload, safe access may require a clustered file system, locking, application-level coordination, and vendor-supported multipathing or host settings. Read-only access or separate volumes may be more appropriate when concurrent writes are not supported.

What to check when choosing shared storage

Compare systems against the workload and the hosts that will use them. A shared array is not automatically the right choice simply because several servers need data; the access model, compatibility, resilience, and operating costs all matter.

Redundant controllers, multiple paths, and RAID can improve resilience, but none replaces independent backups and tested recovery. The cited IBM explanations describe architecture and qualitative trade-offs; they do not establish a universal performance figure, failure rate, or recovery guarantee.
