The best beginner running shoe is the one that fits comfortably and suits the runs you plan to do. If you want one versatile place to start, try the ASICS Novablast 6; if you need a lower-cost option, extra cushioning, easier run/walk comfort, or added support, the other picks below address those priorities. Treat every model as a candidate to try, not a guaranteed fit or a way to prevent injury.
The six categories and models here reflect RTINGS’ guide as current on October 7, 2026. Prices, stock, and available sizes or widths can change by retailer and region, so check local listings before buying.

Six beginner running shoes, matched to different needs
These are not a universal ranking: each shoe is included for a distinct use case. RTINGS says it has bought and tested more than 300 running shoes using pairs purchased with its own money, not supplied or sponsored by brands. That describes its testing program, not what every runner will prefer. See RTINGS’ beginner running shoe guide.

|---|---|---|
| ASICS Novablast 6 | Versatile everyday running | RTINGS’ overall beginner pick: cushioned and light enough for regular runs, with a stable feel but no strong control features. |
| Nike Winflo 12 | Mid-range option | RTINGS’ mid-range category pick. Check the current local price and availability; the category is not a guarantee that it costs less than every alternative. |
| adidas Questar 4 | Budget-minded shopping | RTINGS’ budget pick, with a lower, more secure-feeling platform. Compare current prices and return terms where you shop. |
| ASICS GEL-NIMBUS 28 | Maximum cushioning | RTINGS’ cushioned pick: soft landings and a protective feel, with extra bulk and less liveliness. Better suited to relaxed running than to a light, quick ride. |
| HOKA Clifton 11 | Run/walk plans | RTINGS’ run/walk pick, combining cushioning with a steadier base and feeling less cumbersome during walking intervals than its overall pick. |
| ASICS GT-2000 15 | Trying a stability shoe | RTINGS’ stability pick for runners seeking purpose-built support. Consider it as an option to try, not as a diagnosis based on your foot or shoe wear. |
For one everyday shoe: ASICS Novablast 6
If you want a starting point without a specialized goal, the Novablast 6 is the most versatile option in RTINGS’ testing. Its cushioning and regular-run suitability make it a reasonable first shoe to try, but fit still decides whether it works for your feet.
For a mid-range or budget search: Nike Winflo 12 and adidas Questar 4
RTINGS places the Winflo 12 in its mid-range category and the Questar 4 in its budget category. Those labels are useful for narrowing a shortlist, not fixed price promises. Retailer, region, sales, and stock affect the price you actually pay; check the live listing and return policy before ordering.
#1 Best Overall
- Lightweight, breathable mesh upper with synthetic overlays for added durability & support
- EVA sockliner provides soft, step-in comfort
- Charged Cushioning midsole uses compression molded foam for ultimate responsiveness & durability
- Solid rubber outsole covers high impact zones for greater durability with less weight
- Offset: 10mm
For a softer, more protective ride: ASICS GEL-NIMBUS 28
The GEL-NIMBUS 28 is the pick to consider if plush cushioning matters more than a light, lively feel. The tradeoff is a bulkier ride. ASICS describes the GEL-NIMBUS line as highly cushioned for neutral runners, particularly for pavement miles. Its category description is not a promise that the shoe will prevent pain or injury. ASICS’ comparison of GEL-NIMBUS and GEL-CUMULUS also describes GEL-CUMULUS as lighter and more energetic for daily miles; that is useful context on shoe types, not a direct comparison of all six picks.
For alternating running and walking: HOKA Clifton 11
Run/walk sessions put comfort during walking intervals alongside how a shoe feels while running. RTINGS highlights the Clifton 11’s cushioning and steadier base, and says it is less cumbersome on the walking portions than the Novablast 6.

For added guidance: ASICS GT-2000 15
A stability shoe is one option if you want extra guidance from the shoe. It is not a requirement for beginners, and the appearance of wear on an old shoe cannot establish that you need one. Saucony’s guide distinguishes neutral shoes from stability shoes intended to limit inward movement; use that distinction to understand the category, then judge the actual fit and feel. Read Saucony’s running shoe guide.
How to choose your first pair
Start with the type of running you plan to do, then compare fit, ride, support category, surface, and what the shoe costs where you live. The most useful choice is the one that feels comfortable on your foot for your intended use.
Rank #3
- Athletic mesh upper with durable leather overlays for added dimension & midfoot support
- Charged+ midsole cushioning provides unmatched softness & all-day comfort
- Durable rubber outsole provides traction & durability with strategically-placed flex grooves for proper toe-off , Upper contains at least 30% recycled content
- Weight: 10.2 oz , Lace type: Standard tie
- NEUTRAL: For runners who need a balance of flexibility & cushioning
1. Check fit and width
- Try the shoe on and judge how it feels on your foot; brand reputation alone cannot determine fit.
- Check the model’s available sizes and widths. Options differ between models, and your running shoe size may not match your everyday shoe size.
- If online sizing is uncertain, a local specialty running shop can help you compare fit and width across options.
2. Decide what kind of ride you want
Highly cushioned shoes can feel soft and protective, while lighter or more responsive daily trainers can feel livelier. Neither type is automatically right for every beginner. Consider whether you prefer a relaxed, cushioned feel or a lighter ride, and try the shoe if possible.
3. Choose support by preference, not guesswork
Neutral shoes are intended for runners who are not seeking extra support; stability shoes offer additional guidance. You do not need to identify your gait from wear patterns or assume that every new runner needs stability. Compare how the categories feel, and seek professional advice if you have a specific medical concern.

- For a run/walk plan, consider whether the shoe stays comfortable during walking intervals as well as running.
5. Compare the real purchase terms
Check the current price, sale status, size and width stock, and return policy in your market. The category labels in the picks above do not establish a stable price ranking across regions or retailers.

Runner’s World’s guide offers a different set of options for more specific preferences: Brooks Ghost 18 (overall), New Balance Ellipse (value), Brooks Glycerin 23 (wide feet), Altra Torin 9 (zero drop), Nike Vomero 18 (a “bad knees” category), Brooks Adrenaline GTS 25 (stability), and Altra Experience Wild 3 (trail). These are alternate picks from a separate publisher, not consensus winners. A category label involving knee pain is not clinical evidence that a shoe treats pain.
Runner’s World says its testing includes an editor who runs in hundreds of shoes yearly and approximately 300 testers with varied paces, arch types, and gait patterns. Those figures describe its testing process, not the running population. See Runner’s World’s beginner running shoe guide.
