A secure digital storage device is a medium that stores data and uses safeguards—such as encryption, access controls, or change logging—to reduce unauthorized access, disclosure, or alteration. A USB flash drive, SD card, or SSD is a storage device, but its format alone does not make it secure.
What is a digital storage device?
NIST defines a storage device broadly as an electronic or optical device that holds data for later retrieval. Examples include fixed drives, removable USB flash drives, memory cards such as SD cards, and optical discs. NIST’s 2022 review of digital investigation techniques discusses these device types in the context of acquiring and examining digital evidence.

Removable media can serve different purposes. A USB drive might transfer data to another device, while a memory card may need to remain installed for the host equipment to operate. In a weighing-equipment example, NIST describes a USB drive used to transfer calibration data and an SD card used to store data needed during operation. That is an example from a particular equipment context, not a universal distinction between USB drives and SD cards. NIST’s example includes SD, SDHC, SDXC, and SDIO formats, as well as different card form factors. NIST’s 2019 weights and measures report describes the example.
What makes a storage device secure?
Storage and security are different properties. A device can retain files while leaving them readable to anyone who obtains it. Security depends on which safeguards are implemented and whether they address the risks in the device’s intended use.
#1 Best Overall
- CAPTURE LARGER THAN LIFE. Unlock 4K UHD(3) brilliance and pristine high res stills with video speed class ratings of U3 and V30(4).
- SPEED BARRIERS SHATTERED. Save precious moments with blazing read speeds up to 250MB/s(2) and write speeds up to 170MB/s(2) [256GB-1TB capacities(1)].
- MAXIMIZE WITH MASSIVE CAPACITY. Capture for longer and store more with up to 2TB(1) of storage that can hold up to 2,808 minutes of 4K UHD video recorded at 30 fps (641MB/minute)(9).
- DEFY THE ELEMENTS. Unrelentingly resilient, Sandisk SD memory cards are engineered to perform in extreme conditions, despite rough handling and constant use.(6)
- CONTENT MANAGEMENT, SIMPLIFIED. Back up, organize, and transfer everything easily with the Sandisk Memory Zone desktop app,(7) whether you use an SD card slot or a card reader.
- Encryption: Data is made unreadable without the required key or credentials. Check how access is unlocked and how keys or credentials can be recovered.
- Access controls: Authentication or other controls restrict who can read or use the stored data.
- Change controls and logs: Controls can restrict or record changes to data or configuration. Logging can improve traceability, but it does not by itself prevent an unauthorized change.
- Management and recovery: For personal or organizational use, consider how credentials are administered and what happens if they are lost.
Evaluate a security claim against the specific risk: loss or theft, unauthorized copying, unauthorized modification, or an organization’s compliance requirements. The word “secure” on a product label is not proof that a particular safeguard exists or is suitable for your needs.
When do audit logs matter?
In some regulated equipment, removable storage can change settings that affect the equipment’s operation. NIST’s 2017 weights and measures report discusses an event logger for such changes, recording an event counter, parameter ID, date and time, and new value. This is an example of auditability for a specific equipment context—not a general requirement for every storage device. See NIST’s 2017 report.

Is a write blocker a security feature?
A forensic write blocker is used during data acquisition to suppress commands from the host that might change the source device. NIST recommends hardware or software write blocking for hard-drive or similar-device acquisition when possible. It is a way to help preserve evidence during examination, not a substitute for encryption or everyday access controls.
Write blocking does not guarantee that the storage device itself will make no changes. NIST notes that solid-state wear leveling can move blocks and that device behavior such as TRIM can affect deleted data. NIST’s 2022 review discusses these limits.

How should you assess a secure storage product?
If you are choosing a device, assess more than its capacity or connector. Useful checks include:
- What specific protection mechanism is provided, and how is it enabled?
- Is there independently verifiable validation relevant to your requirements? Verify the exact model and current status rather than assuming every product in a category is certified.
- Will it work with your host device, operating system, and intended workflow?
- How are access, administration, and recovery handled if credentials are lost or a user leaves?
- Does the device meet any personal, organizational, or regulated-use requirements that apply?
Hardware-encrypted USB drives are a real product category; for example, Apricorn lists encrypted portable drives, desktop drives, and flash keys on its official website. A vendor’s product listing establishes that it offers the category; it is not independent verification of every security claim or the current certification status of a particular model.
