It may be with the same provider or a different one, and it is distinct from an extra address attached to your existing account or an email used only for account recovery.
What “second email account” means
The phrase is ordinary language, not a universal technical label. It usually means that you can sign in to and use another email account in addition to your first. Microsoft describes having multiple email accounts as often practical in its Outlook guide. The additional account can be from the same email provider or another one.

How an account differs from an address or recovery email
The key distinction is whether you have another account to manage, rather than simply another address or contact detail associated with the first account.
| Type | Separate account or login? | Where messages go | Main purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Second email account | Yes: another account you can use | Its own mailbox, though an app may let you view multiple accounts together | Everyday sending and receiving |
| Extra address or alias | Not necessarily; it can belong to the existing account | Yahoo says an extra address within an existing account routes messages to that account’s inbox (Yahoo guidance) | Another address associated with the existing account |
| Recovery email | Not by itself; it is a recovery contact | Messages go to the mailbox for the address provided | Helping verify identity or regain account access |
Google also lets some non-Gmail addresses be associated with an existing Google Account for sign-in and recovery, subject to restrictions and verification. That does not automatically make the address a separate everyday email account (Google Account guidance). A recovery address may belong to a mailbox you control, but its recovery role alone does not mean you use it as a second mailbox.

Why people use more than one account
Separate accounts can help keep different kinds of mail apart—for example, work correspondence, personal messages, shopping, or subscriptions. This is an organizational choice, not a guarantee of privacy or security.
Can you use both accounts together?
Often, yes. Microsoft says many modern email apps can manage multiple accounts together. Google says users can sign in to multiple accounts at once, but some Google products do not support simultaneous use; Google also cautions against doing this on shared devices (Google guidance on signing in to multiple accounts). Whether you can switch between accounts or view them in one app depends on the provider, app, and service.

An email app is the software used to access mail; it is not itself the email account. Similarly, Outlook uses “profile” for a product-specific container that can hold one or more email accounts (Microsoft’s Outlook profile overview).
