Nintendo Switch Won’t Connect to Wi-Fi? How to Troubleshoot It

Find out why your Nintendo Switch won’t connect to Wi-Fi and follow the right steps for a missing network, failed connection test, or home-network outage.

First check what the Switch is showing: a missing network name needs different troubleshooting from a network that appears but fails its connection test. On the console, open System Settings > Internet > Internet Settings, then follow the branch that matches your symptom. Testing near the router and checking whether other devices can get online will help pinpoint whether the issue is the console, home network, or internet service.

Start with the symptom

  • Your Wi-Fi network is missing: check range, interference, whether the router is hiding its network name, and whether its settings are compatible.
  • The network appears, but the connection test fails: check whether other devices work, then use the error code to guide the next steps.
  • The network name is grayed out: Nintendo says this indicates that the network uses an unsupported security type.

For each check, go to System Settings > Internet > Internet Settings. Nintendo recommends trying setup within about 10 feet of the router; its troubleshooting guidance suggests testing within roughly 10–15 feet in some cases. A nearby test helps rule out weak signal.

If the network name is missing

Search again close to the router

  1. Move the Switch close to the router, then open System Settings > Internet > Internet Settings.
  2. Let the console search. If your network still does not appear, press Y to search again.
  3. Restart the Switch and retry the search.

Reduce wireless interference

Move the console and router away from possible sources of interference. Nintendo lists metal filing cabinets, speakers, power strips, glass, and cordless phones among objects or electronics that can affect wireless connections. If practical, temporarily move the Switch or router and search again.

Check whether the router hides its network name

A hidden SSID will not show in the Switch’s normal scan. If you know the network name, password, and security settings, use the console’s manual setup option to enter the network details. If you are unsure of those settings, check with whoever manages the router before changing them.

Check the router’s wireless settings

Nintendo lists support for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi, 802.11b/g/n/ac, and WEP, WPA-PSK (AES), and WPA2-PSK (AES). A grayed-out network name points to an unsupported security type. Ask your router manufacturer or ISP about compatible settings before changing the router’s security: a change can affect other devices on the network.

If the network appears but the connection test fails

Check whether the internet works on other devices

  1. Try loading a website or using an online service on a phone, computer, or another wireless device connected to the same network.
  2. If those devices also cannot get online, check that the modem and router connections are secure.
  3. Unplug the modem and router for at least 30 seconds, reconnect them, and wait for their indicator lights to stabilize before testing again.

If other devices still have no internet, contact your ISP, router manufacturer, or network administrator. A network-wide outage or router problem is more likely than a Switch-specific fault when multiple devices fail.

Use the Switch error code to narrow the cause

Nintendo’s guidance for connection errors identifies DNS settings, slow internet, wireless interference, and weak signal as possible causes. Move close to the router and run the connection test again. If your router broadcasts both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, try the other band.

Also check the console’s DNS setting. For an ordinary home network that does not require a particular DNS address, use automatic DNS rather than a manually entered address. If a school, workplace, or other managed network requires a specific DNS setting, ask its administrator before changing it. Nintendo treats alternate DNS as a diagnostic option, not a universal fix; its guidance notes that Google’s public DNS is subject to Google’s terms.

Test another network, then contact the right support team

Try connecting the Switch to a different access point or network, such as one at another location. The result helps separate a console issue from a problem specific to your home network.

  • The Switch cannot detect any access points in multiple locations: contact Nintendo Support.
  • The Switch connects elsewhere but not to your home network: contact your ISP or router manufacturer.
  • Other devices also fail on your home network: work with your ISP, router manufacturer, or network administrator on the broader connection problem.

Consider a wired connection as a workaround

If you would rather use wired internet, Nintendo says a USB LAN adapter is needed for a Switch dock without a built-in LAN port. This provides a wired alternative; it does not repair the console’s Wi-Fi connection.
